Did my 1st ever ctc yesterday! Based on the pacing advice I was hoping for c12 minutes so pleased with 11.55.8. Went hard during the first 250m (but not flat out) and eased off in the 2nd 250m so I didn't fly and die in the final 1,000.
1. 3.27.9 1.43.9 29
2. 46.9 1.33.8 36
3. 3.27.9 1.43.9 29
4. 47.6 1.35.2 35
5. 3.25.6 1.42.8 30
T 11.55.8 1.42.2 32
My best recent 2k is 1.43.8 in Dec so pace was 1.6s faster. Interested in how that compares to others as it may indicate if my new training plan is working. And I'd rather not do a 2k test!!!

Well done Max, that's an excellent time to mark your 1st CTC Hopefully the first of many to come. As a comparison, I just did a fairly maximal 2k today in 1:44.9 pace compared to 1:43.9 for the CTC so you're probably in the right ballpark and can put off the 2k test until you have more training under your belt

Re: January ctc - 1000m/250m/1000m/250m/1000m (R:2'/3'/2'/3')
I had a go at this today. I was hoping to do the 1000s at 1:55 pace and the 250s at 1:40 pace, but ended up being a couple of seconds slower at both. Currently at the rear of boat V and hoping that at least two female rowers will post a time before month end - preferably 3 as I'm likely to fall out of boat V before month end. Jennifer has a nasty chest infection and won't be able to do this month's challenge.
For the record, my splits were as follows:

Yes, great debut Max.
Thanks for the encouragement Alan. I've actually done more rowing this month than in the previous 8 months combined, but mostly long slow distance. My back is still not 100%, but better than it was before my recent weight loss. I'm not sprinting flat out because of my back, but I would probably 'blow up' if I tried to go faster in any event.
If I don't suffer any ill effects from today's effort, I'll try to have another go before month end.

Some great efforts this month - well done all !
Bit of a pathetic effort on my part this month I'm afraid as I'm on my way back from a bit of a rib twinge. Hardly done any rowing since the start of the month but rowing no longer causes actual pain, just a bit of odd discomfort so I'm back with some gentle efforts. The pace on both length intervals was much the same as that's my max confident pull at the moment.

Hello,
it is nearly a week a go, and sorry for the late respond, i made my one and only attempt, the first intervals were ok, but the last 1000m were really tough- i knew that it would come that way- so i quickly decrease my pace to 1:50- so i didnt do this HD thing... but lost 10s of my previous plan.
Since January i started in a new job...so no more nightshifts---but of course a missing routine ! And lots of common colds...
Congrats to all finishers and hope for some more entries till the end of the month

Well done Guy for rowing the ctc despite your injury! I was surprised to find your name in FS V but that rib injury explains it. Well done and thank you!
Although you don't seem satisfied that is still a very strong effort Claudius, well done!
I had my second go on Saturday. Since my first attempt I was able to bring down my PP session by about 3 seconds in pace. So I hoped to do the same with my ctc splits and aimed for a 1:46 for the 1000s and a 1:41 for the 250s. That idea lasted for about 650m into the first interval until I realised that this pace was way too fast for my ability
Aborted the session, rested for a couple of minutes and started my next try, now with a target pace of 1:48 for the 1000s and 1:41 (or whatever a flatout 250 would look like) for the 250s:
First 1k was tough, second one was better, the third one was terrible (just like it should be ). The 250s were basically flat out, just like Fred had suggested. So overall very happy with an improvement by 6 seconds.

Congrats to all those still putting in more/multiple efforts on this one. I'm sticking with just the one I think as I just don't fancy delving into the pain barrel too deeply for a while for anything I've already posted a score on.

Congrats to one and all for this pretty unpleasant (aren’t they all), C2C
I was hoping to get an entry in earlier this morning, but I’ve been splitting time with my new Ski-Erg (I’m so far useless at this), the Wattbike and the (proper) erg
Thanks to Erik on this one, I used his pace as a guide, and his account of a HD on the 2nd rep, helped me get through more than one urge to HD.
I hope you can get another go to save a seat in Boat 1 Erik
11:33.2. 3500m. 1:39.0. 33
1000m 3:20.3. 1:40.1. 164
250m. 47. 1:34.0. 33. 159
1000m 3:19.9. 1:39.9. 33 170
250m 1:34.0. 34. 161
1000m 3:19.1. 1:39.5. 35. 172
I didn’t push the 250m pace too much even with the significant 3m rest afterwards
Actually felt better warmed up for the second rep, felt some lactate in the last 100m - from the start I concentrated on getting the rate up (I think the only reason I managed to get past 500m without handling down, then thought once down to 400m it’s in the bag ... tricked myself into it not being painful until the last 300m)
Last 250m rep not so much more painful, last 1k let the pace slide to 1:41 then emptied what was left over the last 400m
I thought it only fair to give my account so Erik can use this if he chooses to take another go (or you can just get revenge next month Erik, and every month afterwards)!

Well done, Jon
When I saw you posting again, I was expecting a strong result - and must admit I didn´t get disappointed... Really impressive you managed sub 1:40 pace for the summarized 1k reps
Will have another go - today or tomorrow - some chance of an improvement, but off course nowhere near your time...
A little off-topic (unless you plan to do a ski-erg entry ) - how are you getting along with your ski-erg

Very impressive row Jon
I'm also interested in how you're getting on with the skierg. Been dabbling myself and finding it a very hard workout. Partly it's getting used to a different technique and also psychologically hard to see different numbers on the monitor. What kind of split differences are you seeing compared to the rowerg?

Re: January ctc - 1000m/250m/1000m/250m/1000m (R:2'/3'/2'/3')
Thank you Erik and Felton
Having someone else's score up as a pace guide makes a big difference, I doubt I could have done this otherwise. I don't think I'd have been good for a much quicker pace with multiple goes. I had a little extra time before work today, which I find makes a difference - too much pressure and results don't happen.
I bought the Ski erg towards the end of November and managed to clear a space for it at the beginning of December. I was amazed how quickly I felt exhausted with it even at a significantly lower pace than the (row) erg.
My first 2k was 30/11/2017 with a time of 8:19.4 (rate 39), my heart rate ended up 169 by the end and this was without a warm up! I've just counted a total of 12 workouts. Initially, I was needing more time for recovery (with pain around the shoulders - posterior deltoid / triceps region).
My most recent workout 28/01/2018, I did 3* 8mins, and managed 1:57.9 (rate 44) with an end heart rate of 172. It's satisfying to be making improvements. I'm not typically able to tolerate longer workouts, I've been doing more short interval sessions though would now like to start building in some slower, longer intervals in addition to these. I've been concentrating on generating most of the force using my upper body weight and locking the abdominals and trying not to use my arms too much and not to reach too high otherwise that becomes a limiting factor. Also, I think keeping the stroke short which is what people like Justin Farina advocate, seems to help. I'm very much a beginner still and I'm totally humbled by what others are able to do (like maintain my 8min pace for 60mins with a heart rate barely out of zone 2)!
Seeing the improvements though is fun, and I've sworn to my wife when I bought it, I will make good use of it!
I've also been using the Wattbike a fair amount and quite often I start a session with the ski-erg then move over to the Wattbike for a lighter aerobic session afterwards. I've been training consistently since the start of October with the intention of getting fit again, though it takes time as you all know!
Good luck with your next effort Erik if you get a chance to squeeze one in

I'll have a go at this tomorrow - it will be slow but I'll be adopting my favourite rowing adage of ' Better to arrive than not at all '.
Despite Peter's excellent pacing plan for the 1000k, which he worked out for me last year at Madchester, I'm still struggling to better my 1000k PB. Apart from occasionally using it as a WU or WD I hardly ever attempt it. The thought of one 1000k is bad. The thought of three is
Paul, I do hope that Jennifer is over the worst of her chest infection.
Much kudos to all.

I'm sure you mean 1000m Jill - only a complete madman would do a 1000k !!!
60 yrs old, 82kg, 5' 10"
43Mm metres rowed. Re-setting the bar much lower now. Getting too old and brittle for this malarky

Jon, I´ve only tried the ski-erg a couple of times, and I found that holding 2:00 pace even for a little while felt surprisingly tough - so for you to be able to hold sub 2:00 for a long time I would say you can be pretty proud of Yes, I can surely relate to your enthusiastic attempts to get some successes with improving - for my part a relief from the "downhill" of erging times...
Yes, was inspired, too, by your approach, Jon, especially that "in the bag" feeling with 400m to go, that would be a long, long time since I last had that feeling... Anyways, in the last rep I had to go faster than 3:24 to get overall 1:40 pace and as the prediction with 200m to go said 3:25 I just gave it all I had (like in the good old days - but of course much, much slower now), so I made my "goal":
1: 3:20.8 1:40.4 32
2: 0:46.9 1:33.8 40
3: 3:22.7 1:41.3 33
4: 0:46.2 1:32.4 40
5: 3:22.9 1:41.4 34
T= 11:39.6 1:39.9 35

My goodness Erik, I called for an answer and What a response!
That's so impressive you pulled that out of the bag with a day to spare. I forgot what fun this is (especially given there's not enough time for me to have another go )
A well deserved boost in time. Yes, we may be getting older, but we can still have fun. I was a bit wheezy at times and thought I should probably find my inhaler (might go as fast as Chris Froome then)

- Plummy, you are right, I'm not a complete madman. However, the jury is still out as to whether I am an ever so slightly madwoman. Would love to see Peter's pacing plan for me though, over that distance.
At least I made Erik laugh.

It's inspiring to see people posting some great results - with or without having fun
This month I have been putting the CTC off again, since I haven't been doing much sprinty stuff and wasn't looking forward to this one. However I feel that I can't miss out here, so had a look at what my 1k interval times were a few months ago and picked a target pace of 1:56 for the 1k, and 1:49 for the 250m pieces. That should get me a (hopefully realistic) overall pace of 1:55.
It worked out quite well, no risk of HDing and a slight increase in pace over the 1k pieces:
Jill, good luck tomorrow, I've got no doubt that you'll do well - and there's no need to improve your PB this time

3:50.7 1,000m 1:55.3 228 1084 30
Don't think I'll try this one again though, I'll save my energy for next month's CTC Jill, good luck tomorrow, I've got no doubt that you'll do well - and there's no need to improve your PB this time

Solid effort, Jan, well done
Jill, not so much you, rather that Plummy doesn´t miss a single occassion to make that remark... He´s done it before... Good luck tomorrow, Jill
