For on the water extreme racing, go here:

And is anyone else dreaming about this: http://www.woodvale-events.com/Docs/Rac ... ntic.shtml
I am. Have to convince my better half to let me try. I think about it a whole lot, actually.

Further insanity:
I have to confess to giving serious thought as to attempting to tow or wheel an erg around the London Marathon, and then sit down and row a marathon at the end. Suspect it could take 10+ hours to get round the course, but this is the same as the less practical costumes (12 foot pirates, etc.) and much quicker than the mad chap in the armour with the dragon...
I also had a look at some of the ultra-distance world records, and figured that some of them are not completely impossible with a lot of targetted training, and also that we might manage to come up with some new categories that C2 would be prepared to recognise, and hence we could get some records by default... (Maybe this needs a separate topic for discussion - hey, maybe we should have a Free Spirits General Insanity forum... )

Oh joy.MaxDev wrote:I had another idea that came from Paul's suggestion of erging on a boat, and what ptruz said about doing some extreme erging by a river)... why not IN the river.
Needs a firm gravel bottom, water no more than 8'' deep (there's parts of the river Wye at Hereford that go like that in summer, and I'm sure there's plenty of others)...
Water should preferably be over the footrests, and just under the slide.
Brings a new meaning to OTW
I was idly perusing the C2 metre board when I saw that this has ALREADY been done by one of the team! (Maria Larcombe who seems not to be active in the forum).
P.S. I am in negotiations with Tamsin to take the erg to the top of Gog Magog in Cambridgeshire (admittedly not a very high hill!) and do a row on film. Anyone else want to do this and send me the footage?

Do you think that the London Eye would lend us a car for a day?
Never been on it but I susepct that we could get and erg in there.
Perhaps do a rotation each? How long is a rotation?
12 hours or so of erging. With 2 machines we should be able to get close to 400k?
Perhaps put a couple more on the plaza outside and try to get to a million in say 15 hours?

I already said that!!!!
I think it takes an hour to go round - so good for a 60 min PB attempt. Dunno about a whole day, but possibly for a revolution or two if we ask nicely and it's for a good cause. Would make a good stop motion video, methinks (eh, Thomas?)
I still wanna do the spans on Tower Bridge...
Wonder if you can get an ergo up the stairs at the Monument.
(In all seriousness, if we can approach the Corporation of London the right way, we should be able to get access to a wealth of landmarks)

I say you plan a Spring Row at the Eye.....British Air might cooperate early in the day.....for Charity. Here is the key....I have been on the eye and I think you can get more than one erg in the car......there is LOTS of room......each is like a bus....but there is seating in the middle that breaks it up......you might get 4 ergs in the car.......If 20 people participated and you have.....say 10 ergs in the plaza......on the ground and 4 on the Eye and took turns.....that would be a great day! I would love to do that.....might have to fly over for that one.

How about rowing the length of the Thames from Reading to central London?
Not sure how far this is but the full river is 215 miles or about 344k. So perhaps 100 miles or 160k? If it's 80k each, that's 10 rowers for 30 ish mins each. Say 6 hours.
We could have a London boat going upstream and a Reading boat downstream to meet in the middle.
If we could actually get some ergs on a boat and cruise the river whilst rowing that would be even better.
There are people who do river cruises. I'll find out about costs and things.

you could always do it in a boatwebberg wrote:How about rowing the length of the Thames from Reading to central London?

i think a UCL crew did this a few months back and raised a fair bit.
doesnt have to be a racing boat. you could always try a skiff. can get some big ones, try and hire it out. might need an overnight stop, but would be able to stash stuff in the boat and swap positions for rests quite easily. be quite an achievement. something to think about
