DONE! - Free Spirits Global 1,051,133m 72 hour relay

Post by Mike Channin »

For anyone who doesn't know, we've going to be doing a global relay event over three days in December (starting Tuesday 12th at 9:00pm and finishing Friday 15th at 9:00pm), and hoping to cover at least 1 million meters. We're doing this alongside Big Dave K's student version (starting Tues 12th 9:00pm finishing Wed 13th 9:00pm but with 3 ergos going simultaneously).

Now all the slots for the 3 days are provisionally full, but I'm sure some of us with multiple slots can relinquish them to allow anyone who has missed out to have a go - just let us know.

The provisonal full slot booking is listed below. (For amendments or requests on this, please post to this thread from now on)

Hopefully the official Free Spirits xmas do will be in London on the evening of the 15th (after we've finished), but even if not, I'm going to be out celebrating our achievement, and everyone is welcome to join me! (Please post any thoughts on this on the xmas meeting thread)

Here is the thread for progress tracking: http://www.freespiritsrowing.com/forum/ ... .php?t=393

well done guys for organising this so quickly. should be an interesting challenge. us student types will be rowing much shorter shifts, but fatigue's going to be setting in towards the end, going to have to hit the start hard i think, get into a good lead.

may the best (youngest) team win!

it's on like donkey kong!

Well, good luck - you'll be up against Mike aiming for a 1 hour PB as our lead off man.

And of course we'll be on our own for the next two days. It will be VERY interesting to see if we can nail 1 million metres in three days. Nice to think that the Free Spirits fly-wheels will be spinning round the world for 72 hours!

I'd be very surprised if the students don't end up miles ahead as they'll be rowing it as a short intervals relay and we're rowing it in minimum sessions of 1 hour. They should be MUCH quicker than us.

However, we only need 13,889m per hour on average to hit our target, which is 2:09.6 pace, so all being well, we should be ok.

Of course, if we row MORE than 1 million meters, well, we just get Thomas that bit nearer to the moon.

Which reminds me, Big Dave - get your boys signed up!!!

Agree that Big Dave K's lot should wipe us out... well, we'll have to let them have that - even if the timetable wasn't already organised, I don't think there's any way we could co-ordinate to row shorter than 1hr sessions the way we're spread out geographically.

But a word of caution about achieving that target... Mike... remember that while 13889m/hr may be JUST that to you, there are plenty of people here who might not be able to row 14k/hr on demand, no matter how good the motivation.

Personally, I'll be very happy to hit my target of 100,000m over the seven sessions I'm down for, but I know that's 'only' 14286m/hr, which means I'm only likely to get us about 2.8km ahead of schedule, so there's not much slack in my sessions to make up for others.

I have a feeling it could be a very close run thing, even if you do post some 16k+s. It might in fact be an idea for each of us now to guess (conservatively possibly?) what we think we might achieve in our chosen sessions, so we can see how it's shaping up.

I know this is going to be pure guesswork, but it might show us whether we're in the right ballpark.

Well personally, I'm hoping to go for a 1 hr PB (~16k) and a 2hr/30k PB (~30.5k) in two of my sessions. The other two will just be recovery pace rowing, so 14k per hour. This means I should clock 88.5k in total over 6 hours (~5k up if all goes well). Of course, if I blow up on a PB attempt, this could be somewhat less healthy looking...

My 1hr SB/PB is 12330. That's a 2:25 split. (Look - I'm short & unfit! )
I'd hope to do better than that - but don't expect to best it by much - 12600m is a realistic target for me at the mo.

I'm on third on the first day - so I guess you'll see quite quickly if that time gets made up.

End of term gets messy - which is partly why I didn't volunteer for any later slots - but I admit also I didn't want to give the rest of you too much to make up. On the other hand if there are any last minute hitches I'm happy to be a 'reserve' to keep the flywheel turning if I can.

Janet has raised a good point about stand-ins. We probably should have at least a provisional plan in case someone has to drop out of a slot at short notice.

I volunteer to be be first point of contact (and emergency rower if all else fails) during UK daylight hours 9:00 am to 9:00 pm all days. Anyone else want to cover some time? (Will need some US cover for the small hours here)

Yes, I always intended to work out what the projected metres were for each person.

I will be doing a PB attempt on the first day - hopefully 15,600m?

Then a UT2 row the second day - around 14,700m

And you just know that if we are, say 40,000 short with one hour to go, a few people might lend a helping hand...

I feel that Ive let the team down by not signing up but the time-table made me realise how constrained my work and family life is.
I row between 6 pm and 8 pm Tue Wed (work permitting), between 6 and 8 pm Friday and then a little more flexibly at the weekend on both days.
I should be able to help on that Friday night and would be delighted to take part between 6 and 8 if needed!

I may also be able to act as a short-notice stand in, but would then probably want to give up later sessions that I've got, as I don't think I'll manage more than seven.

To see whether we are likely to hit the target, I've consolidated the list of sessions down to a list of distinct rowers, and suggest logging low and high estimates (and updating the total figures and number of hours for which estimates have been recorded as you go) to see whether we might make it. I've put in figures for those who've guessed so far...

Mike, Janet, Thomas - please feel free to adjust my figures if you think they are unrealistic / unfair!

I've only just realised as a result of doing this that BorisZ is proposing to row a 3-hr session and 2x2-hr sessions, and I thought I had it hard!

Also, Mike neglected to mention himself in the roll of honour earlier for volunteering for 5+ sessions

Edited to add BWD, Plummy and Stan's estimates from below.

I'm hoping that I will be able to come in between 14,600 and 15,000 for each of my sessions and would aim for 59,000 in total.

If things are looking close I will push harder on my final couple of sessions.

I would estimate 14600 low and 14900 high (15000 would be a pb and a real bonus but this is in the middle of a "working" day so highly unlikely).

If it's any help, I could do another hour anywhere between 11.00am GMT and 9.00pm GMT on the 2nd or 3rd days as a stand in (or is it "sit in").

I will be looking for a pb on the first session (14700+), a recovery session (14200) on the second and then maybe another pb attempt on the 3rd - it would be nice to exceed 44k for the 3 sessions.

I'll try for 1 PB at least out of the 3...

But it's our Christmas Party on the 13th (with chocolate theme), so I reckon my 8am 14th slot might be a little slower.

Day 1: 14,400 - 14,600 m
Day 2: 14,200 - 14,400 m
Day 3: 13,500 - 13,700 m (includes time to stop and throw up)

Blimey, I've only just spotted the this thread. I didn't realise this was soooo serious

I've only done the hour a couple of times, but was over 14k both times (although HR was way too high).

So you can put me down for 14k-14.5k for the estimate.

Also, I'm good to fill in on the morning of day 1 (much more flexible work wise) if needed.
Anyone need phone numbers?

Cheers, Wolfie

If someone's interested in doing a session, but the timing of that last vacant one is a problem, I could probably pick that one up in exchange for any of my other sessions, if that makes things easier...
