Thank you for letting us know Roger, all the very best to you both.Roger B wrote:- Regret Gillian no longer understands the detail required for a change in stroke rate or remembers that each month there is a CTC comp. She is perfectly happy to sit on the machine and row in her own way and will continue to contribute to a team.

Roger, I also found your news both sad but uplifting somehow in that Gillian is still physically active.
Great idea of Plummy's!!

Re: June ctc - 500 r22/30''r/1000 r26/30''/500 r30
Despite the heat and a half marathon still in my legs I decided to have my third go at this yesterday. Plan was of course to beat my old time of 7:21.7, but I was very concerned about the stroke rate. A 5 second penalty (or even a multiple of it) is a huge fine, so I really concentrated on stroke count. This is how it went:
_500 / 1:52.2 (1:53.4) / 22
1000 / 1:51.3 (1:51.3) / 26
_500 / 1:44.5 (1:45.6) / 30
Total: 7:19.4
Happy with finally slipping under the 7:20 barrier. I was paying so much attention to my stroke count in the 1000m that I almost forgot about the pace The three intervals are of completely different nature which makes this ctc interesting and challenging at the same time. I think you have to look at them one by one and don't think about the next rep when you're still busy with the current one.
Maybe I can gain a little time in the middle 1k next time with fresh legs and lower ambient temperature.

A great deal of admiration for those of you who have completed this challenge.
It is heartening to hear that Gillian can still enjoy her rowing - I expect that you are learning, where possible, to go with all the things that do not upset and agitate her.
It was seeing Gillian’s CTC entries that finally persuaded me to give it a try and for quite a while we were pretty evenly matched. I shall miss seeing her monthly contribution.
A thumbs up for David's idea and although Gillian is no longer able to understand the intention, I'm sure we would all enjoy rowing in her honour.
Thank you Tako, and of course, you are right, slow is relative. All set to have an attempt tomorrow, boosted mentally by the thought of how lucky I am to be able to row at all. This fact always acts as a sharp reminder and is needed for the times, when I get ‘ down in the dumps ‘ about my rowing, compared to that of other people.
Roger, thank you for the update about Gillian - I do think about you both and the impact that Alzheimer's disease must have on your lives and trust that if needed, you are receiving the necessary advice and support.

I've added 15 seconds onto my time - hope that this is correct. Please let me know if it isn't and I'll re - enter my time on the CTC.

Jennifer is having back and neck problems and probably won't be able to do the challenge this month.

Thank you Paul - not my finest effort but it did the job. As a fellow Diamond, I think Tommy Gee should have waived my penalties.
I am sorry to hear about Jennifer, that's two young Victories in the wars - I hope she will soon start to feel better. Although Gillian has retired, I still have to contend with Jennifer; when you persuade her to take part in the CTC, she is my most feared competitor. Not sure of our tallies but they must be close.

This time I used a metronome app which made things a lot easier.

I'm on board for any kind of recognition row for Gillian and all of her CTC contributions. Good idea Dave. Roger it's nice to know she's still enjoying being on the erg.

Final attempt last night for me. After the first 500m I thought I'd blown it rate wise but I was please to see this at the end:
Not so pleased to see a certain David Plumb 0.1s ahead of me
Well done to everyone, and I very much agree with the thought behind our choice for the next CTC.

Yeah, 3.1s better over all, DF at a feasible 170, again with Metronome. I'm done with the CTC for this month.

First CTC since December last year, it will take a few months to get back up to speed but happy to be in a boat
Well done to everyone completing the challenge this month, looks like we need a few more rowers to get the last boat floated!

As already mentioned by Sheena, we're still getting back to our earlier fitness levels. I wasn't planning to do the CTC today, but after Sheena's attempt I couldn't help myself. I was hoping for a time near the 8 minutes mark.
My first 500m was in 1:58.9, and I took it a bit easier for the 1000m, at a 2:01.8 pace to keep something in reserve for the last 500m. I started this at a 1:56 pace, but it soon became very hard to keep this up, and ended up with 1:57.1 over the final 500m. Overall time was 7:59.7, just below target.
It felt good to be back on the list with all the other Free Spirits, now looking forward to next month's CTC

Very nice improvement on an almost impressive score Ralf, well done! =D> What I don't understand is that you entered your old score (6:44.0) in the ctc table rather than your new score (6:40.9)?
I'd echo what Tako says, welcome back Jan and Sheena and thank you for floating another boat! =D>
