As expected, a struggle. But the knee seems to be in one piece. I actually had no idea how I was rowing because I was so obsessed by the stroke rate. I hit the targets but only by straying 1-2 spm above it in a fairly random way #-o

7:39.6 2,000m 1:54.9 26
1:54.9 500m 1:54.9 22 176
3:52.2 1,000m 1:56.1 26 184
1:52.5 500m 1:52.5 30 190

I've used the last 500 to bag some Nonathlon points. 781 of them no less. Seems a bit generous to me.

Very impressive ctc premiere for Free Spirits Ralf, well done! =D> Given your height and weight I'd expect a time well below 7 minutes before month's end (no pressure of course  :fswink: )

Nice result Jon, that leaves three FS lightweights within 1.5 seconds on the table. Be prepared for Ian's and Dave's response...

One thing regarding the nonathlon score by the way: I don't think you can use the final 500m as a nonathlon score as it wasn't done from a standing start (there's no way the flywheel comes to a complete standstill within 30 seconds). Just use the first 500m, it's only a 2.4 seconds difference anyway.

I agree with everything Peter just said - especially the use of the last 500m from the CTC for the Nonathlon as I almost posted the exact same concern a couple of days ago.

Well done Ralf much more to come I reckon-welcome to Free Spirits :D

Well done Ian this one is a stinker isn't?

As usual I did not take my own advice and take it a bit easier on the first 500-I went for it and blew up spectacularly with nothing left for the final 500 :(

7:27.3-2000-1:51.1-26
500-1:51.1-1:51.1-22 Very long and powerful strokes, legs already feeling heavy
1000-3:42.9-1:51.4-26-nothing left after this
500-1:53.3-1:53.3-30-not sure how I managed to finish felt just like a flat out 2k TT at the end

If I have another go I will be much more conservative on the first rep.

Kudos to you Peter for your time, can not see me beating you on this one -grrrrr

Nice score nevertheless Alan, don't be too disappointed! If I understand it correctly you've reduced the amount of rowing in favour of running recently. I guess your next attempt (especially now that you have an idea how to pace it) will be much quicker. I better get ready to have another go myself before you're catching me! :fswink:

Very good point - I hadn't thought of that. I'll just have too put the knee under some stress and put in a quick 500m to get the points then. #-o

Two more attempts in the last couple of days...

Attempt no.1:

First 500m piece was an improvement (maybe low 1.57s) and on the money for s/m. The 1km wasn't great (maybe 3.49s), but again the s/m seemed fine. The second 500m was all over the place, no idea what the s/m was by the pace looked good for 1.49.

Then the PM5 crashed and lost everything :x

Attempt no. 2:
Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr s/m 7:35.6 2,000m 1:53.9 237 1114 26 1:57.5 500m 1:57.5 216 1041 23 3:47.8 1,000m 1:53.9 237 1114 26 1:50.3 500m 1:50.3 261 1196 30
Couldn't settle on any of the s/m required and I'm frankly surprised that I hit the target for two of the pieces.

I'd be extremely p****d if that happened to me! Are you using a USB stick? If so, I'd recommend using the Ergdata app. I'm using it since day one and never *knockonwood* had an issue with it.

Does that mean you missed your former result of 7:40.0 by just 0.6 seconds? Oh my, that must have been two very frustrating erg sessions! But nevermind, it was still good training! :fswink:

I felt a rather philosophical about the second attempt - at least I know there's definitely a second or two to aim for if I can just relax a little (and count strokes rather than play the game of trying to hold a given stroke per minute).

As for ErgData: have now downloaded and will try it tonight - thanks for the suggestion :)

Second attempt and got 7:31.1 but had to add 5s for the first rep overshoot by 1spm - grrrr.

Bumped up to FS 1 for a while though

Yesterday's 2nd attempt for me was a lot better than my first. I managed to finish right on the 22,26,30 spm (last time had 10 seconds penalty) and a bit faster than last time too:

Meters Pace
2,000m 1:51.1 (7:26.0 total time)

500m 1:50.7
1,000m 1:53.5
500m 1:48.3

Good to see my other half Emma has floated another boat too.
Hopefully we'll get a few more ladies completing this over the next couple of weeks.

That's a great effort Gregor. I can't get even near the times other guys are doing for the 22spm leg but the 26/30 spm leg is better for me. I had a third go yesterday and managed to nail the spm targets but was 0.6s slower on the total time so 7:31.7 looks like it's going to be my best effort.

A bit late in the month for me, but another effort that reflects very well on one erg session a month!
500 - 1:49.5 / 22
1000 1:48.9 / 26
500 - 1:57.6 / 27 total blow up!!
7:24.9 + 15s penalty

I resolve to row regularly again once its out of storage. Thankfully another week to go for another effort or two.

Steve, with one erg session a month that's still a very good effort! Are you doing any other sports instead (playing golf, running, swimming, working :D )?

Hi Peter.
I should be able to complete 500m though right?
I find it difficult to lay off the effort when sticking to SR, so the first two intervals were what felt comfortable. If I can ease back a bit, I should save 25s or so.

Plenty of golf as always (at least twice a week), and the odd run. We have moved more in to the country, and I can jog slowly for 3 or 4 miles or so in great scenery and no cars 8)

That would be great Jill as it would float another boat, and remind you that slow is relative! Finishing it will put you in Boat III, which is not that easy for several of us ;-) :-) :-D

I agree with Tako, it would be great to have another few boats floated.

And check the gender of that arthritic sloth, if it's a female, see if you can get here to attempt the CTC too.

Regret Gillian no longer understands the detail required for a change in stroke rate or remembers that each month there is a CTC comp. She is perfectly happy to sit on the machine and row in her own way and will continue to contribute to a team.

That is sad to read Roger - but inspiring that Gillian is still contributing to the team. Maybe next time we get the CTC choice we should pick one of her favourite distances or times as a thank you and so she can join in.

Trying to attach screen shot of session - hopefully it will work!
Was so relieved to see 22/26/30 at the end of the session :D
IMG_2440.JPG
IMG_2440.JPG (99.17 KiB) Viewed 1653 times
In case it doesn't work:
500m @ 2:00.1
1000m @ 1:56.2
500m @ 1:53.0

I don't mind doing rate restricted training session, but as a CTC with harsh time penalties for being under or over I'm not sure I'm a big fan... Sure you can watch your rating whilst doing the interval, but especially with the last 500m it would be very easy to go 29 or 31 without intending to given the PM doesn't show you average stroke rate. If it is a time based interval then you can count strokes to monitor stroke rate but with a distance based interval the math that would be required whilst rowing to work out how many strokes you should do based on actual speed is beyond me

Anyway, it was more enjoyable / less painful than I had feared so if you haven't had a go yet you've got no excuses :D
