I beg to differ: put your recent 2k and 10k results into the pace predictor and got this:

Looks like I will have to give it another try, but why did you leave the 2.0 above?

The 2.0 only affects the 500m time so shouldn't affect the predicted time for 5142m

Bravo Tako, noticed that earlier on the CTC site. Incredible effort and another very difficult target for me.

Thanks to you both!
Not really sure how I managed it as I was several times close to HD!
Original plan was to row easy in the morning, but that got crossed by a surprising delivery at the door of a gourmet breakfast! A delayed birthday present :-)
At that point my wife's comment the night before "maybe you should row tomorrow evening to get more restitution" made sense, as it didn't when she made it, because she is not very involved in my Erg adventures. But of course the big Mud challenge this month affects the whole family.
When I finally made it to the Erg in the afternoon I marked my CTC time and the times of the gents in front of me in big fonts on the scree of my pc, and decided to give it a go after a short warm up.
Any advice on how to slow the wheel so one can start faster from a standing start? I simply put it on 10 and waited.
Then I put the damper on 5 and got going in my typical pace of 22-24spm.
And tried to keep the 1:4x.x on the screen. Fighting a lot of mental fights it was a great feeling to see the result :-)
Couldn't believe it. Was so much on adrenaline that I decided to also build the 1000m world sprint into the rest of my 10001m for the Mud challenge.
Improved my time from Saturday but not close to my PB from November.
Any way very satisfied to have made it and given Felton a new challenge ;-)

Some serious competition between Tako and Felton, well done guys! =D> =D>

After my first go more than two weeks ago (1:57.4 pace) I had two more on which unfortunately I had to handle down  I couldn't even hold a 1:58 pace. I don't think I was worse fitness wise as my heart rate was even lower at a slightly faster pace, but around the 3.5k mark I couldn't persuade myself to keep torturing myself.

So attempt #4 last night with the plan to hold 1:58 for the first three sections of 1100m, then speed up in the fourth 1100m and a finish sprint from there on. I set myself three goals:

bronze: beat my own time (20:07.3)
silver: go sub 20
gold: beat Dave's time (19:55.4)

That's how it went:

1100m / 1:58.0 / 27 / 162
2200m / 1:58.0 / 27 / 170
3300m / 1:57.3 / 27 / 171
4400m / 1:55.5 / 28 / 171
5142m / 1:52.8 / 29 / 173

Total: 19:58.9 / 1:56.5 / 27

Happy with the silver goal, the golden standard set by Dave was just too good (for now  :fswink: ). I tried to concentrate on technique right from the beginning to get distracted from the pain that would come sooner or later. It worked, with a lower stroke rate as a nice side effect. I even had something left for a decent finish sprint. I don't trust the heart rate reading though, it definetely felt more like 180/190 towards the end.

Now waiting for Alan and another attempt from Steve :fswink:

Had my 2nd go this morning. Plan was to stay around 1:55-56 then see what I had left the last couple minutes.

1000 / 1:55.8 /27
2000 / 1:55.4 / 27
3000 / 1:55.3 / 27
4000 / 1:55.6 / 28
5000 / 1:54.8 / 28
5142 / 1:47.7 / 31

total 5142m / 19:44.8 / 1:55.2

Improved by about 20 seconds, really had to gut out the last 1500m.

I think that's the way to go Alan. Better get a slow score than none. Once you have a marker you can work on from there and beat me :fswink:

Had my first real attempt at this today after having to bail out on my first attempt 9 days ago. I'd love to blame it solely on back problems, but lack of mojo has also been a major contributory factor in failing to get back on the erg since then.

Anyway, it's my birthday, so I've decided to turn over a new leaf. My target was to try to get under 2:00 pace, but this went by the wayside after around 1,000m. So I decided to concentrate on just keeping going as I really, really did not want to HD on my birthday. Pace crept out to around 2:05, but I kept going and saw towards the end that a sprint finish would get me under 21 minutes, so I did a fast last 142m and just about made it.

I'm off to Alvor tomorrow, but I'll try to have another go at the CTC while I'm over there. I also have the IRL to do before month end - that should be fun!

Splits were as follows:

Split Time Pace Rating
1000 3:59.1 1:59.55 26
1000 4:05.2 2:02.60 25
1000 4:08.1 2:04.05 25
1000 4:10.0 2:05.00 25
1000 4:07.4 2:03.70 25
142 0:29.1 1:42.46 37

5142 20:58.9 2:02.41 25

That's some way to celebrate a birthday Paul  Well done and thanks for helping the team despite your current back issues =D>

Had another go myself last night and I still had a bone to pick with Dave  :fswink: who was still ahead of me. Joe also was ahead so I set myself three targets again:

bronze: beat my time (19:58.9)
silver: beat Dave's time (19:55.4)
gold: beat Joe's time (19:44.8 )

As I was a bit tired from work my plan was to not overdo it in the beginning and stay at a pace 0.5 seconds slower than last time to make sure I wouldn't handle down. If the last third comes up and I'm still feeling fine than it's time to open the hurt box  That's how it went:

1100m / 1:57.0 / 27 / 164
2200m / 1:57.0 / 27 / 168
3300m / 1:56.7 / 27 / 170
4400m / 1:55.0 / 28 / 170
5142m / 1:52.2 / 30 / 181

Total: 19:51.3 / 1:55,8 / 27

Joe's time was too hard to beat (this time  ) but I'm still happy with an improvement of 7.6 seconds and to provide Dave, Alan and Steve with something to think about over the weekend  :fswink:

Ive made several attempts this month, but its been hard work. After last years elbows problems I lost masses of fitness and then in January I signed up for a drop a jean size class (yes Plummy I know it needs more than 1 jean size but you have to start somewhere!) and promptly destroyed my knee (unable to walk at one point with the pain) using a tread mill and now rowing is about the only thing I feel safe doing due to low impact. I can walk again and no pain up and down stairs but don't want any lateral stress on it at the moment. So sticking to cycling/rowing which doesn't seem to be aggravating the injury in any way. I have also been using weights and a hand cycle.
Anyway times have come down from 24:50 at the start of the month to sub 23:40 yesterday, which feels the same as sub 20s used to, which shows how much I have lost. I need to stop dwelling on what I could do and concentrate on moving forward from here. Will have another couple of goes before the end of the month.
