With all these inspirational times [ =D> ], it makes me want to try. I'll be experimenting with drag factors over the next week (recorded at around 120 for this time) to see if there's any room for improvement.Grobi wrote:Ian Bee, another improvement, well done! Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
Attempt #5 last night for me and again I set myself three goals:
- bronze: beat my own time of 39:55.9
- silver: beat Steve Selwood's time of 39:38.5
- gold: beat Alan's time of 39:29.6
Plan was to start out at my old time's (and SB's) pace of 1:59.8 for 6k, then speed up gradually in the next 2k (the new SB should be in the bag by then) and then see how I feel for a finish sprint in the final 2k. That's how it went:
_2k / 1:59.7 / 27 / 158
_4k / 1:59.5 / 27 / 166
_6k / 1:59.4 / 27 / 171
_8k / 1:59.4 / 27 / 179
10k / 1:56.2 / 28 / 190
Total: 39:37.6 / 1:58.8 / 27 (SB by 18.3 seconds)
The first 6k felt ok despite a pace slightly quicker than planned. My heart rate was still lower than in my precious effort so I wasn't too worried I might blow up. Unfortunately I did Somewhere around 3k to go I had to slow down for a couple of strokes allowing the split pace to rise to 1:59.8 I was able to pull it back to 1:59.4 so no positive splitting here, but that cost me a lot of energy. At least my SB was safe at this point, overall pace was 1:59.5. I knew Steve Selwood's pace was 1:58.9. I wasn't sure if I could find another 0.6 seconds in pace as my heart rate was almost at 180 now after that intermediate "sprint". On the other hand, if I try I might fail, If I don't try I surely will fail, so game on For the final 2k I allowed myself a pace no slower than 1:58. With 1k to go I noticed that this might not be enough to catch Steve, so no slower than 1:55 from now on. 400m to go and I'm still at 1:59.1 Time to open the hurt box. Some h/d demons had gathered around my erg but I chased them away with a couple of 1:50s. 200m to go, counting strokes now, 20 "big ones", damn, still another 30m, three more and I'm done. Just managed to squeeze past Steve and completely knackered afterwards

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
Great write ups Peter. I was looking at your 39:55 (and have been for a week) and had my third failure to even finish the 10k last night (bailed at 6k @ 1:59.5 pace). The head cold last week put paid to the first two attempts and I've trying to convince myself that the 250 miles of driving and 12 hour working day yesterday had some effect on the lack of cajones to drive on through last 4k. That said - you would still have been ahead of me so I would have been a bit gutted after reading your post!

Brilliant effort Peter, I had another go on Sunday but overcooked the first 5k dramatically so I am leaving it for this month even though it would be nice to beat Trevor, I think I need to be rowing with him like last year for the extra challenge!

Thanks Dave! Somehow I knew you were looking at my previous result But don't be too hard on yourself, 12 hours of working and driving beforehand on the same day isn't helpful when exploring 10 SB territory!
Thanks Alan! I can't promise though I won't try again to beat your time. I'm on a roll currently and want to make use of it while it lasts.

Managed a 38:09.1, which I consider pretty good, looking at a PB of 37:45.4. The hardest part was rowing down from 7km to go to 3km to go. After that I dared to speed up. Full story here: http://blog.rowsandall.com/2016/10/19/o ... y-default/
I am surprised to find myself in Free Spirits I with 10 days of October left.
A Season's Best by default, because it was the first serious 10km after May 1.

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
Knocked another 30+ sec off my previous PB by not doing a warmup this time and upping the rate a bit.
Felt good. I was watching 1k split averages with a goal of hitting the PB average or below each time. One segment near the end got sloppy and missed target, but I was pleased with 3 segments at 2:02.9.
Great job Sander & the others pulling this one. Long piece!

But for your recent improvement Peter I would have given you a little scare tonight with my improvement. Splits were set at 1250m.
I have to say, this hurt!
1:59.4
1:59.2
1:58.8
1:59.0 (thoughts of quitting a 5k briefly - but only briefly)
1:59.1 (thoughts of stopping at 6k for the LWTs 6K challenge this month on FB)
1:59.7
2:00.0 (just hanging on now)
1:58.4
HRT was 160 average and SPM 27
Total time 39:44.8 - only 2.5s off a 2 year SB!

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
In the first half of my second attempt I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to maintain the higher rate, but it turned out well.
In hindsight, maybe the start was too slow (again). Overall this is an improvement of 34.7 seconds on my first effort, and enough (for now) for a seat in a full boat. It also leaves me two seconds behind Barbara's PB row.
Great rows too by Plummy, Peter and Sander!

PB is 48:01 2:24.0 from Dec 2012, so I've got some catching up to do.

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
Roger, almost 35 seconds is a great improvement. You started out conservatively but I think conservative pacing is the key to long sessions. Maybe 1 second quicker in pace at the beginning for your next attempt?
Eric, that was a stonker! Great time already, good luck going sub 1:36
J-Dog, that was a very well executed first attempt, but given your strong negative splitting throughout I can see a new PB by month's end
Ha, Ian Bee, I knew you'd make it, well done! Looking at your second last split I'd say that one hurt. Well done for fighting it back in the final split!

Thanks chaps - and good luck J-Dog
Yep - my mind wandered off at 8km which made the last split a little tense.
The CTC scoreboard looks very healthy at the moment: 8 full days remaining.
