Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
Being on the road for work and being bitten by the C2-virus I had to find a gym with an erg, although I was pretty tired. There was a good one close and even with PM4 so I could use my log card First I tried the mile after warmup, but collapsed early. However, as I after a while noticed that the time was not bad yet, I gave it all in the end, which made me top of our list being the first). As I need the exercise for my body and thinking of the c2 fall team challenge, I programmed the 10k and although being monitored by many around me on other torture instruments and occasionally disturbed by people "warming" up on the erg next to me and staring at my PM I managed a fine time and made it into boat II So hopefully another attempt later this week although the fee for the gym was stiff 25CHF.

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
Some nice results for the ctc early in the month already, well done everybody!
J-Dog, I agree that your option #3 was the best choice (although we are usually short of females in the ctc, so you might re-consider option #2? ) Anyway, looking at your 30' time trial it seems you are exploring your heart rate limit more closely now. So I would echo zoot's advise of starting off slowly in order to not injure yourself (conservative pacing is the key to long distances in my book anyway).
Ian Bee, interesting comparison of waterrower pace vs. C2 pace. And well done on your 10k, the pace was actually quicker than on the 30' previously, impressive!
Zoot, interesting way of pacing a 10k Maybe you try negative splitting on your next attempt? Maybe starting at 2:18 for the first 2k, then 1 second quicker for every successive 2k?
JonT, nice comeback, well done for rowing through that sea of pain!
Felton, what didi you have for breakfast? A 1:55 pace at 20/min over 10k is unbelievable! I (and I'm sure you too ) wonder what your pace would be on an unrestricted piece?
Dan, I like the "go with the flow" approach (reminds me of otw rowing). I really seemed to help you, strong result and nicely paced. You really should have another go.
Tako, you really got something for your 25 CHF The Swiss make you pay through the nose, don't they? Well done anyway for going well below 40 minutes, especially after the mile!
After a half decent (41:57 / 2:05.8 ) attempt on Monday and a three quarter decent (41:06 / 2:03.3) attempt on Tuesday it was time for a full on attempt yesterday. Plan was to start out at 2:03 pace for the first 6k, then 1.2 seconds quicker for the next 2k and speed things up in the final 2k. This is how it went:
_2k / 2:03.3 / 27
_4k / 2:02.9 / 26
_6k / 2:02.5 / 27
_8k / 2:01.5 / 27
10k / 1:55.8 / 28
Total: 40:24.5 / 2:01.2 / 27
Well, this was fun (in a way only indoor rowers understand, of course). The first 2k felt surprisingly easy (especially considering this was my third 10k in three successive days) so I changed my plan to speeding up earlier. After 8k I still felt ok, time to change that The final 2k weren't pretty but fast (how they should be ), so I guess I'll have to have another go. Eventually I'd like to go sub 40 and maybe some day beat Alan's time of 39:29.6 (don't tell him! )

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
Makes a change from me being the target - thank you Peter
I was happy with my 40:08.0 as I only really set out to get below 41:00 and "see how it went". Given my 2 year SB only a week or so ago (of 39:42) I didn't want to try to beat that as it was a bit horrible. I also hope to dip under 40 mins again and I do like a 10k so will certainly be having a few more goes at this one.

Too late someone beat you to itGrobi wrote :- Eventually I'd like to go sub 40 and maybe some day beat Alan's time of 39:29.6 (don't tell him! )
I overdid this and went through 5k in a little over 19:30 and died badly in the second half
So will have several more goes but I'll only post when I beat it
I seem to remember being in this exact same position in the last CTC Peter and you eventually beat me so game on

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
It's almost like starting again - I just don't know what I can hold for 40 minutes, complicated by the looks from the other gym goers for rowing for anything longer than 25 minutes (lots of pointing to polite signs saying that's the max CV time in busy periods ).Grobi wrote:Ian Bee, interesting comparison of waterrower pace vs. C2 pace. My target for the weekend early shift is to hold 2.10-2.13 for the bulk of the 10km and see if I can "sprint" the last 1km or so.

Good luck to everyone else! =D> =D>

Well done to everyone whose completed this so far.
I had 2:20 as a target to beat and ideally under 2:19.7 which would give me a PB, and I just made it with a final sprint
Well done Peter for beating your time three times in a row, and Ian for hogging the gym machine =D>

Hi Tako, it was a veggie version, with veggie smoked sausage in stead of the rookworst (not sure whether you can get that in the UK anyway). Still does the job though

Well, I attempted to hold 2.11 with the following result
Not pretty or steady, and I think any more gains (for this month) will be marginal.
Time Meters /500m Watts s/m
43:43.4 10,000m 02:11.1 155 26
08:41.7 2,000m 02:10.4 158 25
08:45.2 4,000m 02:11.3 155 26
08:45.8 6,000m 02:11.4 154 26
08:47.6 8,000m 02:11.9 153 27
08:43.0 10,000m 02:10.7 157 30

I see 16 registered times =D>
I think I'll manage another attempt in the gym this weekend, and feeling ever so slightly less guilty . I think a time high in the 2.10s is feasible, but think this challenge has exposed that my technique on the C2 needs a educated eye (maybe not using my arms/back enough? - but wary of pulling muscles again).
I also made the schoolboy error of googling "damper settings".

I started this today, but had to bail after just over 6k when I began to experience sharp pains in my shoulders. I'll try again tomorrow.

Ian, I think you are aware that it's eventually the drag factor you should be interested in, not the damper setting?Ian Bee wrote:I also made the schoolboy error of googling "damper settings".

I understand you row in a gym, so machines there might have a different level of maintenance and therefore a different connection between damper setting and drag factor. I'd check the drag factor before rowing and not rely on the damper setting.
