Hey well done on the improvement J-Dog =D> I thought I'd better give you a more challenging target
I had a target of 2300 in mind which would bump me up a boat, for a while at least, but then last night Clare rowed a 2311 :-k

It was sort of going to plan until the last 2-4 minutes when I started to struggle a bit and I didn't have anything left for an end spurt, also I guess the 2300 target was more attractive at the time [-X

Nice rowing, Sheena.

That's another 3 seconds I have to find from somewhere :-)

2,300 certainly has a nice ring to it, but I've only got 9 days left to go . . .

It does, indeed, have a nice ring!

I guess not. I think it's somewhere between 170-175. There is still room for improvement in this CTC!

Really well paced row Sheena, well done! =D>

Zoot, that was a perfectly executed ctc in my book! Beautiful pacing, looking at your heart rate you pushed harder again this time but I bet you were confident to bring it home all the time. An improvement of 71m over your first attempt is great, and you still have room for improvement. Why not start out at 2:02 pace for the first six minutes the next time, then 2:01 for another two minutes (you'd be at 2:01.8 then) and open the hurt box for the finish sprint. I can see the 2500m mark falling We still have eight days of September left :fswink:

I was scheduled for an otw row yesterday which didn't happen so I decided to have my fifth go at this. Aim was to beat Alan's pace (sorry Alan :fswink: ) of 1:51.6 / 2689m. Plan was to start out at 1:52 pace, wait for the pain to arrive  and then see how much is left. This is how it went:

02mins. / 1:52.1 / 29 / 159
04mins. / 1:51.9 / 28 / 171
06mins. / 1:51.5 / 30 / 174
08mins. / 1:50.9 / 29 / 180
10mins. / 1:47.5 / 31 / 186

Total: 2707m / 1:50.8 / 29

Well, the pain arrived after six minutes  I decided to concentrate on technique at this point to distract myself from the pain. That worked and it also had the side effect that I went quicker in minutes 7 and 8 at a lower stroke rate. With two minutes to go I was at Alan's pace of 1:51.6 so all I had to do was to stay below 1:51 to ensure I'd end up ahead of Alan (which was hard enough). With one minute to go I noticed that 27xxm showed up occasionally as the projected finish. "Hmm, if I just keep pulling a little harder I might get past 2700m, that would be nice, wouldn't it?" I told myself and kept pulling. It was hard, but I finally managed to pull 2707m, an improvement of 35m over my last attempt. Knackered but happy afterwards :D

Fantastic rowing, Peter, and also a great story of how it went.

I can imagine the erg flexing, and the sweat flying, and the occasional rude word escaping your lips as you dig deeper to keep going on pace!

I think I'm going to have to turn up the effort a bit on my attempts. I may be taking it too easy. I was being super-gentle with myself as I'm only just re-starting rowing/exercise, but your account makes me want to try a bit harder . . .

I wonder if Alan is going to make you do it all again by getting to 2708?

If I encouraged you to have a harder go yourself then all the hard work did something good  I don't know your state of fitness and don't want to encourage you to do something silly, but when you say you've been super gentle I think it's time for a harder approach now  :fswink:

I hope not! I don't want to do this again and I'm relying on Alan saying he's merely meter munching for the Fall Team Challenge now. Alan, you don't want to be in pain, do you? :fswink:

J-Dog, so you're taking it easy [-X Still beating your earlier distance by over 50m is a great improvement already.

Great row Peter =D> =D> - and thank you for moving the target out of my reach. I was still tempted to have another go - but for reasons of a future target ( :-$ ) I'm sticking with the FTC challenge and longer distances for the time being.

OK. I tried harder.

I was expecting it to be really painful, but I tried a higher stroke rate today.

I usually go at around 22 or 23, but I noticed Sheena and others were going at more like 28.

The time seemed to fly past. Not sure if it was because I hadn't rowed for a few days and was rested, or if the higher stroke rate helped.

An extra 56 metres :-) with maybe a little extra to come. And just over the 2,200 mark.

Still on my own in the last boat, but ahead of a few more boats now.

Peter,
Yes, Sir. I'll get onto that today. :-)

First half was much easier than the second, but I might be able to add some more metres if I'm willing to push into 160+ HR territory.

When I was doing lots of running, 8 years ago or so, I would cruise at 160 and get worried if it crept up to 170+, but I'm being more cautious with the extra years and just starting back up. I'd set myself a "don't push past 150" limit.

That said, I wasn't really breathing hard until 150 ish, so I probably have some range left.

J-Dog, the first half of your last attempt looks comfirtable indeed heartrate wise compared to the second half. If you're going for another try you should find most of the improvement in the first half. You know now that you can do the whole piece in 2:16.2. Why not start out at 2:16 today for six minutes, then 2:15 for another two and then speed it up? I can see a 2:14.5/ 2230m for you today.

Good luck :fswink:

I must admit, I had to do a fierce sprint to get there.
At the start of the month, 2600 was my ultimate goal too, but that's too ambitious for me now. If you get there in your next attempt, I will hold my hands up and congratulate you.
Rodger, I must admit that I'm not sure whether I'll get to 2600 either. My plan is (was) to do 4 minutes at 1:56, then 4 minutes at 1:55 and then in the last 2 minutes try to speed up to get over the 2600.

I tried this last Wednesday, but things felt so easy at the start that I went out at 1:54 for the first couple of minutes. When things got more difficult later on, I used this as an excuse to convince myself that I would never make it, so I slowed down and finished with 2492m. I knew I could have at least improved my current CTC distance, but somehow didn't feel up to it

Today I had another attempt, which went slightly better (but only slightly). I started off on plan, but had a wobble just over half way (thinking that I wouldn't be able to keep up this pace until the end). I recovered after a few slow strokes, only to have another wobble with about 3 minutes to go. Again I recovered, but slowed down to 1:58 for a minute or so, then had enough left for an end spurt to finish on 2586 meters.

Not a bad improvement, and it puts me in the next boat up. I feel that on a better (more confident) day I should be able to achieve 2600, just not sure whether it will be this month :?

Peter,
gave that a try.

2:16 was OK to start with, but 2:15 got hard, and I only managed a last minute 'all in' of around 2:14 or 2:13.

An extra 12m is all you get, today.

I have lots of travelling this week, then hols for 2 weeks, so I may not be showing up much for a bit. Thought I'd better post, first, to make sure you knew I wasn't on the floor of the spare bedroom, in my rowing kit, being eaten by Alsatians after following your training advice :-)

Looks like Sheena is safe this time . . .

Well done, Jan. It takes mental strength to continue the row after two major dips and still come out with an improvement.
You have given me a dilemma now: should I try to get the place in boat IV back or should I do the IRL? Doing both will be difficult to squeeze into the coming week.

Good job J-Dog! Great persistence in this month's CTC!

Jan, I know that "wobble"-feeling all to well, well done for fighting through it twice!

J-Dog, don't be disappointed with an improvement of 12m (I was happy with 8m the other day). Your pacing was very even and that's the fastest (and mentally toughest) way to do it, so well done! Glad you haven't been eaten by Alsatians, enjoy your well deserved holiday :fswink:

Peter -- very strong row! ^O^ Interesting that your stroke rate for min 7-8 was lower, but your speed was faster!

Jan -- those 'wobbles' are very hard to push through. It is sooooo much easier to just stop. Well done! ^O^

J-Dog -- very nice execution -- on both of your recent attempts -- but the last one looks just about perfect. The higher stroke rate seems to agree with you.

I persuaded the lovely Jennifer to hop on the erg for 10 minutes today. She was just back from a 2 hour walk and not really in the mood for erging, but agreed to do it as long as I wasn't worried about what pace she did it at. She paddled along for 10 minutes and covered 1834 meters, so we have another boat floating.

I also had a go, but blew up after less than two minutes and just paddled home without troubling the scorers. I'll try to have one last go before month end, but only to try to hold onto a place in FS3 - feeling very vulnerable at present.
