My simple training planner document

Post by Recess »

So a while back I asked if there was anything out there that I could use to create a training plan from a list of existing sessions. It seems nothing existed. So, knowing nothing about Excel, I've made my own.

The idea is, that at the top, you select what kind of training you want to do, then in the box below, the specific session. Then for days when I'd do a lunchtime row or weights that are a bit more ad-hoc based, I have space to add that too.

I'm still filling out the list of sessions, but I thought I'd throw it up here to see if anyone had any comments / suggestions on how to make it better.

Hang on... it won't attach... Ah. Here we go: http://www.johntherower.com/files/Worko ... er.xls.zip

Carried on working on this today. I'll keep adding sessions to the categories as I come across them, but this is the current list of session choices. This upload has week 1 of block 1 filled out just so you can see what it would look like.

I know there are better things I can do with Excel in terms of tracking meters and reporting, but TBH, between LiveRowing, and the Meterboard on here, I don't think I need anything else - the point of this is about planning the weeks ahead, not looking back on what I've done.

Again, any comments, please let me know.

I am doing it a bit differently. I have a spreadsheet with a few tabs. The most important ones are

1. Year Planner

This is where I capture general goals on a monthly basis, as well as races and tests. I spend a lot of time in this planner at the beginning of September, then I gradually refine it.

2. Macro Cycle Planner

When I am happy with the Year Planner, I start filling in the Macro Cycle Planner. Macro Cycles are Preparation, RACE, and Transition. One level deeper are meso cycles where I follow 4-6 week cycles where the volume varies per week. The training mix of the meso cycles should be aligned with the general goals from the year planner.

3. Week Planner

Every Sunday, I make a detailed plan for the coming week, taking into account the actual constraints of that week. I copy the week goals from the Macro Cycle planner, then start planning the daily sessions. The spreadsheet tells me how far from the target I am.

It's just how I have come to work. And it suits me.

For tracking what I actually did, I use a variety of on-line tools. Not excel (any more). 95% of my sessions (OTE and OTW) are digitally captured, so the logging is easy.

Wow! Wow and did I say WOW!

Thank you both John & Sander.

These are both really interesting to look at... no specific feedback as of now but just wanted to say thanks for posting them here.
