Dear All, I regret I will not be joining you for some time as I have just returned from 10 days in hospital having a defibrillator fitted. During a swimming training session I suffered palpitations and a racing pulse. No left arm activity for two weeks to allow control wire to bed into my heart and then gradual activity. Hope eventually to be back to full pace !!!!!!!!!!!! No driving allowed for 6 months. Roger

This is definitely an unpleasant session so well done to all those who have had a go! Wasn't sure how well 'off season base building' and short sprints would go together but had a go at this today. Only wanted to sacrifice one session to short stuff so did all the sprints in one go with ~ 5 mins easy rowing between each. Not the most enjoyable session I have done but hey was only ~3 mins of pain all up and threw something different into the training mix! My strategy was to do the 100m first and then work up from there, thought that way I would be able to set a bit of a target based on the split for the session prior. Although meant that the efforts were getting longer each time which was a bit depressing!! So aim was to be only around 2-3 seconds slower for each sprint as they got longer. Not sure if this was the best plan but was reasonably happy with how it went and I'm not going to redo it to see if I can improve my time trying a different approach :-)

100 18.5 1:32.5 52
200 37.5 1:33.7 46
300 57.7 1:36.1 46
400 1:19.0 1:38.7 42

Which gave me an overall 'score' of 6:21.3. Think this is the first CTC I have ever done that needed its own calculator tool!!

Firstly - best wishes for a full and speedy recovery Roger. Looking forward to seeing you back paddling away.

Millie - very very impressive times, especially given you did them all in one sitting (please tell me you had a static flywheel though, as "five minutes of easy paddling" isn't a static flywheel)

Lastly, despite wrecking my right elbow again (still got tennis elbow), I managed to take 1s off my 200m time last night ( 37.6s = 1:34.0 ) and just bump JonT out of boat II

Thanks Plummy and yes was definitely static flywheel - I programmed only one distance at a time, so the 5 mins easy rowing was 'Just Row' then a little walk around and then program next distance and repeat.

Best wishes to Roger with your recovery

Roger, praying for a speedy and complete recovery for you.

Finally finished this up. I think that floats another boat.

100 1:47.5
200 1:51.0
300 1:52.8
400 1:53.1

Total: 7:24.4

Not sure if I'll try any of them again this month or not. I seem to be trying to catch a cold. If I can knock it out before it gets established I may have another go at the 200. I think it's my best bet for shaving off a little time.

I'd finished with this challenge. But given you're a sitting duck with your gammy elbow David, and the gap is just 0.4s, I may just have to have another crack this weekend :lol:

Well done all. Just one more rower to get five bots afloat. Any takers??

I'm a bit too far behind to get involved in this fight, was hoping to get below 6:30 but am almost there and the weather is more suited for a pint outside at the pub :)

I see that the ladies have risen to the challenge, well done to all and thanks for floating my boat :D

Well, that was fun! 8)

My training schedule has been all disrupted, but I found myself at home with an hour to kill. I also saw that Sander had done the CTC, so I decided to give it a go.

I did a quick 2000m warmup and then set up all 4 pieces as a variable interval session with 5 minutes of rest.

I ended up with a score of 5:50.6.

Here is the data from the PM5, captured with ergdata and uploaded to the concept2 log.

This is definitely one of those challenges that would get better with practice. My start was terrible for the 300 and the 200. It was also very weird trying to rate up above 35. It might make a bit of difference to do the sprints in isolation, but with 5 minutes of active and passive rest, I felt pretty recovered. Despite the lure of improving, I don't think I will get another erg workout this month, so I'll probably need to stick with this score.

But it was a blast!

Hello,

a well done to the new entrys...and to those who updated their times...so i was motivated to do it also...this time the 200m- changed here although it is a pure sprint my strategy to a nearly standard start: first 2x 1/4 shaft following 2x 1/2 shaft and the rest 3/4 shaft...the most benefit was to set the dumper to 10 instead of 7 i guess...so here are the splits:

Wow! That's an incredibly fast 200m - particularly the first 100m! ^O^ ^O^ ^O^ That's also some increase in your HR over the second half of the row. :shock: What warm up did you do?

Well I can confirm that repeated efforts at this definitely leads to some improvement. I am so far away from being a sprinter that doing this a number of times was always going to help me, especially when combined with some top tips on this forum. I had another go at the 100, 200 and 300 today going higher again on the damper and using Claudius' 1/4 -> 1/2 -> full starting technique.

Improvements of the day were:

100m: 0:19.0 -> 0:18.4
200m: 0:38.5 -> 0:36.5
300m 0:57.0 -> 0:56.0

This moved from a score of 6:22.8 to 6:13.1, moved me up the ranking from 181 to 163, and promoted me from FS IV to FS II which also nudged up a place on the boat rankings.

My technique is still very lacking, so I don't see much more improvement coming my way, especially on the really short distances.

Now feeling guilty about demoting Plummy with his sore elbow. But he's off guzzling somewhere so I don't feel too bad :lol:

Six FreeSpirits boats afloat this month is a good result all round. Happy days.

I do a 1500m warmup with 3x 50m sprints 90% power 300, 600 and 900m, 10min rest with a light streching and walk around and then go for it...

sadly i had a acute ankle sprain...not from rowing :roll: ...so i cant do my improvement on the 100m :?
hope can do the september challenge

So I came finally round doing this and I wasn't looking forward to it. I think these are the shortest distances I've ever entered into my PM, so no experience at all how to do sprints and the results reflect that: :oops:

400m / 1:19.7 / 1:38.8 / 38spm
300m / 0:58.4 / 1:37.3 / 39spm
200m / 0:38.2 / 1:35.5 / 45spm
100m / 0:19.0 / 1:35.0 / 50spm

ctc score: 6:26.7

Amazing how 100m can hurt! :lol: I did this ctc in one session with long enough rest periods to let the flywheel come to a complete standstill. I might try one or anther distance again before month's end, just not sure which has the most potential to improve?

Ouch - so that's really just one long sprint with time to just about catch your breath! Something tells me there is definitely room for better times if you give it a shot. That must be the hardest possible way to do this event ^O^
