June ctc - 30 mins @ 24 spm

So good news for all lovers of stroke rate restricted pieces. Which, I guess, aren't too many

Very tough challenge this month - took 24 strokes exactly each minute and ended up with quite a big jump in my pb (previously 8093m @ 1:51.2)

That's huge! - especially at a restricted rate. Oddly, having to concentrate on power at a lower rate can often tidy up a stroke technique and take your mind off the time so can result in very positive results.

Plenty of 30min sessions on row pro guys and gals, so I expect lots of attempts at this from everyone.
At the moment I don't think I can do 24spm for 30min!
So at least one go a week for me [-o<

I did this as part of a 2x30min/3'R. Took care to start from a standing flywheel on both 30min intervals. Second interval was 7705m.

It was not an easy CTC for this lightweight rower with his tiny engine. Not sure if I will do it again.

At the top of this page it says "maximum average". That's what I did. I counted strokes and knew I had a few left for my 29spm effort in the final minute.

On the CTC site it just says 24spm or lower. Not sure if that is the same.

I noticed that my fellow "rivals" Alan, Steve and Dave hat put in some early and impressive markers. I thought it would just be fair to provide them with a proper nice round target, let's say 7500m So I had my first go at this last night with a target pace of 2:00:

I haven't done stroke rate restricted rowing in ages and completely forgotten how tough it is. Mentally it was okay because you're distracted by concentrating on stroke rate, pace, technique. But it was (not unexpectedly) really hard on the legs. As a side effect I slept extremely well last night

I will at some point but think I need to get back to a training plan - there is only so many all out TT's/CTC's you can do without killing yourself

I like this challenge and although I'll never be particularly strong at restricted rate I think that the focus on the stroke rate takes away the issue of not being able to influence how long the row takes (by going faster/slower). I was actually pretty happy with my 7475m last night (solid 24SPM throughout and almost neg splits too) given my SB earlier in the week was 7555m at free rate.

I'm not sure I will get much more as I was over what I consider as my "comfortable" max heartrate for the last 5 minutes+ of last night's row - but Peter's target of 7533m is not that far ahead - how much could it hurt?!

This is what I love about the CTC - always some kind of 'mini-league' to challenge you - even if that 'league' is all in your head

I set out yesterday with 15min @ <2:00 as target. Done
Today I thought I would attempt 17.5min, then saw Peter's effort
So pushed it to 20min <2:00. Done. Dragged it home for 7519 (ok, so 30min <2:00, but the last 10 was above)
I lowered the drag to make 24spm easier.
I would like to do this two or three times a week for the month...

I'm not sure why, but I decided to have a go at this today after doing 500m and 100m TTs. I knew it wasn't going to be fast, but I figured I could do it as a (sort of) recovery row. Mind you, it's probably not really a recovery row if you're feeling under pressure t keep the pace around 2:00 at 24 SPM.

The HD demons came out in force, but I just about managed to ignore them to finish with 7561 meters. Gets me temporarily in FS1, but likely I will have to improve significantly if I want to stay in one of the top 3 boats by month end. After missing March due to injury, I guess it's better to get a score in early, just in case.

It''s Steve's birthday today and I couldn't think of a nicer birthday present than a new target for him After an earlier attempt this week with 7554m (1:59.4) I decided to go for a 1:59 pace yesterday. This is how it went:

I think I got the pacing pretty much right this time. The last 10 minutes were on the edge of handling down, only psychology helped ("you have come so far, don't give up now, you can't let Steve down now, it's his birthday present "). Really pleased with an improvement of 48m over my first attempt

I haven't posted it on the ctc website yet because it bothers me that two of the six 5 minutes increments show 25spm instead of 24spm. The overall average on my PM still shows 24 spm, but I'm not sure if this piece is following the rules of this month's ctc?
