I was going to suggest you back off a little to try to find something sustainable...

How are you feeling now? Still feeling the pace is unsustainable? Or have your diet and exercise modifications improved your outlook?
Paul Victory wrote:I'm afraid I've slid back into old bad habits of eating too much junk and drinking too much wine. Even though I've been training fairly hard on the Fitness Matters plan (although not quite as much volume as previously), it's proof of the old adage that you can't out-exercise a bad diet. The main thing I need to do is to stop buying chocolate - if it's not in the house, then I can't eat it. #-o
Sorry to hear about the setback, Paul. Very frustrating.

I have a lot of willpower... sometimes... but absolutely none when it comes to chocolate.

================================

I've had a very hard couple of weeks. I've been back rowing for 8 weeks. I needed to cut back a little to consolidate gains and recover... but, as always happens, this seemed to coincide with a surge at work -- working long hours, extra-long commutes, working out of town -- and everything came crashing down. The low point was the day I ate 6 candy bars and 4 pieces of pizza.

I've always had a hard time with balance in my life, and I've made steady gains the past two months because my workload was light and I could focus on eating patterns and exercising. But when work demands, I always seem to lose focus... and then a few months go by and I'm right back where I started.

I managed to snap out of it today... did some light lifting this morning and a 2k test this afternoon. But I'm afraid I'll slip right back the next time I need to work late or out-of-town.

I know I'm just whining, but I really need to figure this out.

Working out of town tomorrow and Friday... but I'm still hoping to get workouts in... we'll see. :-k

Wish me luck!

Cheers,

Time for the monthly update

March 2016 - 17st 12lb (113kg)
April 2016 - 17st 5lb (110kg) - 1/2 stone (3kg)
May 2016 - 16st 13lb (107.5kg) -6lb (2.7kg)
June 2016 - 16st 11lb (106.5kg) - 2lb (1kg)

OK so on the face of that it's a poor loss during May. Not only was there Madchester, with far too much BBQ and other food, I've just come back from a week away on an all inclusive (albeit activity based) type holiday with far more food and booze that is healthy. Combine that with reduced rowing distances during May as a whole, and I had expected I could have put on weight. Still I need to get back on track during June....

It's been over a month since I've posted here, so time for an update. Still eating too much and weight is a bit up and down. Still in the orange zone, but slight increase since last weigh in.

Just spotted this thread, and joining enthusiastically.

I have been losing weight since Jan 2015 when I got Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic. Am on meds but my readings are all now at pre-diabetic levels. (But the damage is done - all I can do now is not make it worse)

The first reading I suspect is a bit high, because after a few months I got very good at weighing myself constant factors - eg pre breakfast, same clothes, ... however if it is high its only a little bit high

Date_____________Mass (KG______Change____Total change
01 April 2015_______125.9________0.0________0.0

01 April 2016_______102.7 ________1.6________23.2
Current____________100.6________2.1________25.3

So my target 1 is 100Kg - very near now at 20% of original body weight
My Target 2 is 200 lbs - ths will take a while, as you can see my 2016 progress has been 1-2 lb a month. Part of that is I have muscled up on 500k of rowing, but part is I do have trouble with hunger after work outs

Mark: amazing progress! Glad you posted. I think you should take lots of time to get from 100kg to 200lbs. Consolidating the losses you've already achieved takes time. One key to managing hunger is to do a lot of your rowing at an intensity low enough to burn fat, but not much carbohydrate. If you go long and slow, you don't provoke the same level of insatiable hunger as you do when yo go hard. If you go hard, then a quick balanced snack right after you finish (chocolate milk!) will help avoid massive hunger pangs later.

That's an impressive change Mark. Well done =D>

Long term weight change needs to be about change in lifestyle, easier said than done, as someone who has struggled over the year to make any real progress on my blubbery frame. Slow but steady is often better even if not quite so motivating, as something more rapid, but it suggests what you are achieving has durability.

Thanks Guys

Agreed and noted - things that helped were Half Marathons (and no snickers), cutting milk out of my coffees (not always black but rarely a latte), cutting fruit as a default snack - and a very boring no alcohol most nights

its a numbers game - every 50 calories you dont eat per day (or do extra on the rower) is about 1lb a month

Hi all.

I'm seeking to get added motivation from the good progress reported here. As per my introduction, I'm an interloper with a waterrower rather than a C2 so I'm very much in the territory of looking to gain knowledge over principles rather than anything precise (splits etc).

I currently train on the basis of 3x 50 minute steady sessions a week (WR reports 2.06 split, but much more likely 2.20), split by 2x sessions of sprint/rest (around 45 minute total - peaking at WR 1.55 / probably 2.03). Weekends consist of slow warm ups only. I shall likely try and record my form for advice, but would appreciate thoughts on type of session which everyone has found produces sustainable results.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome Ian.

My experience - the longer I row the more I lose at lower heart rate, ie sweaty but not panting.

Also the less I snack after a row, the more I lose!!

Pretty basic really, but in the real world oh so complicated!!

Bah, broken my scales so no weigh in results this month. I suspect that might be a fortunate escape as I've not been anywhere as diligent as I need to be to achieve weight loss.

Meanwhile as to what works for weight loss is simply time on the rower, and controlling the intake of food and/or drink.

Thanks both - reassuring advice (though the controlling food intake is my next task....).

I've noticed a significant improvement in my ability to respond to conversations while rowing over the last month (rather than helplessly huffing), while steadily improving the reported distance.

I've recently cut out dairy - thinking it was causing some stomach upset. The plus side to this is I've also cut a lot of cereal as a result. My breakfasts have changed to be higher protein with a lot more eggs and nuts. Maybe something similar would help you curb your calorie intake?

I've been avoiding this thread since my holiday in the hope that I might lose some of the weight I put on while I was in Portugal. But things have been getting worse rather than better, so I decided I should 'fess up' and record my weight before it reaches the dreaded 100kg 'red zone'.

I've put on 3.6kg since my last weigh in  #-o [-X , but it's not really all that surprising because I have allowed a lot of bad habits to creep in. I've been eating lots of junk (mainly chocolate, biscuits and ice cream), drinking too much wine and doing a lot less exercise than usual (both in terms of volume and intensity) and the chickens have come home to roost!

So it's time to draw a line in the sand. No more chocolate, biscuits or ice cream. No wine (or other alcohol) from Monday to Thursday. And no HDing! This latter habit has crept in recently and definitely needs to be nipped in the bud.

I'm going to post my weight each week until it's back under control. I'm also going to post details of the training I do each day, as the threat of having to own up to HDing will hopefully give me the resolve to keep going when the HD demons start whispering in my ear. Please feel free to scold me if I fall short on any of the above.

Paul V

Very brave of you well done Paul =D>

I must confess to a real dose of the "can't be arsed" these days and my erging has dropped off, my current weight is 93kg and I feel very uncomfortable as I am 3 inches shorther than you.

Will use you as inspiration to do something about it

Thanks Alan

I'm going to try to set realistic targets for myself over the next few weeks, as otherwise I'll be setting myself up to fail. If I unexpectedly find myself closing in on an SB, I'll try to bring it home, but my main objective will be to develop good habits and try to regain some mental toughness by refusing to HD, no matter what.

Been off the erg with a sore wrist for a fortnight, so weight loss has stopped. Fortunately I have been able to do enough walking, and my partner has done enough lovely slimming world recipes, that I have kept steady since the middle of the month, during which I got under 100Kg for the first time in many years. Next target 200lbs - but not sure if that's doable (I'm 6"3 and getting a bit more muscle mass). So I will aim for 210 to start with

Well done Mark! Getting below 100kg is a significant benchmark (I should know - I'm rapidly approaching it from the other direction!).

At 6'3", 200lbs is quite a challenging target. It's a BMI of 25% and I know this is supposed to be a cut off point for not being considered overweight, but it's a rubbish 'one size fits all' measure that some g*bsh*te plucked out of mid air that has no relevance to anyone who trains a lot (rant over!).

I completely agree. But a target is a magnet and I am not too far from 25% so I will keep pushing. I am considering starting a marathon plan over the winter - perhaps if I weigh in, just after I finish I might get close!!

A friend who is an ultra runner lost 5kilos doing 100Km over 2 days. Maybe I should do that just so the scales don't lie for 1 glorious moment

Mark, targets are good, they provide incentive, provided they are realistic. 200 lbs may seem a nice round number, but then so does 210 ;)

Paul, we are our own worst enemies. Too much of the good life. My waist line took a lot of investment  If I set out hoping that each time I row I was going to get near a SB or PB then that would demoralise me. Perhaps you are too hard on your ambitions which leads to so many of your HD demons? Even so to achieve long term weight loss, that can only come from a long term desire to change our lifestyle i.e. food and booze intake. Me I'm too long in the tooth for wholesale change and accept that limits my longer term ambition, even if I might get miffed about my tubbiness.

Somehow, 2 months later, having done very very little on the erg, and yet having imbibed quite unsensibly whilst on a week away, I seem to have maintained my weight from the last June check in.

Now if I can just shake off this very annoying hacking cough I've had for a couple of weeks and motivate myself to get back on that thing I keep tripping over that sits in the midst of my living room .....

Mark -- good to see you posting again. Very sorry to hear about the diabetes! Your progress so far, however, is impressive, and a marathon plan over the winter sounds like a great idea! I'd like to join you! (If I remember correctly, you and I were fairly closely matched at one point.)

Ian -- those look like good workouts. The 3x50' will help with your weight, and the sprints will help with your overall cardio fitness. Keep going! =D>

Paul -- what can I say? Those latest numbers are horrible. I know how demoralizing it is to see your weight slowly creeping up like that, so I'm glad you've drawn a line in the sand and are ready to do battle! I agree with Strider, very brave of you.

Rob -- I had that cough for over a month; I still have trouble sleeping. Very frustrating. Maybe a very light row for about 15 minutes, just to make sure the batteries in the rowing machine are still good? :P

====================================

The past few months I have fallen prey to sloth, lethargy, and working far too many hours. My doctor tells me I need to lose 30 pounds, but 50 would be better. (No argument there.)

I'm not sure how this is going to play out. I'm currently walking and doing strength training (5x per week, total). I'd like to do strength training 4x per week (mornings) and rowing 5x per week (evenings)... but I'm not 20 and the pace would be unsustainable. Probably. I like that strength training works each of my muscles through their entire range of motion... but I like how I feel after a long cardio workout, too. Mixing the two types of workouts so I get benefit from both is always challenging. :-k

I'm also, currently re-structuring my diet. If I work from home, I am usually fine, but long commutes present problems I've never really been able to solve. (Do I really want to get up at 3:30 instead of 4:00 so I can eat breakfast at home? Can't I just stop at McDonald's?)

I might start another thread to discuss dietary choices that my doctor talked to me about... or I might post them here. But, now, it's time for bed.

Cheers,
zoot

Hey Zoot

Company would be good. Not feeling that positive at the momentas I have had a few weeks off owing to
a. I hurt my wrist and then aggravated it pulling a 1k, so need to focus on longer slower to reduce risk of reoccurrence
b. my get up and go (mojo) got up and went, as well as a separate resolution to walk along the Thames Path from Kemble to London is taking one full day per weekend out of my schedule

However, your post and my decision to stop slacking are well timed - I think I would be looking for 3'45 as a marathon. My best (and only) was 3'20 and I was about 15s/split faster at that point of my rowing history (2007)

My thinking was to start at Xmas and aim for end of season marathon - perhaps aligned with London Marathon day, and possibly as a charity event. However, to get things going I may start the Eddie Fletcher marathon plan (as per Stan's heroic efforts from yesteryear) but run through the first cycle a couple of times

I will start a thread when I am ready to go (probably end September)

I've kinda reneged on my promise to post my weight each week. It's been all over the place - good weight loss for the first few days, then regression when I started drinking again at the weekend. Today's weight was 99.4 kg - slightly down on two weeks ago, but probably a bit disappointing. I need to try harder. #-o

Well, I'd clearly pushed my luck and succumbed for a muscle injury after 4 months of plain sailing =D>

I can more or less pin it down to the over extension at the start of my stroke, but regardless I ended up with a rather interesting few weeks of back pain.....

Live and learn: starting back again with a slightly modified Pete Plan and supporting exercises at the gym to try and resist the notion that I need to get everything I need fitness wise from rowing.
