Madchester 2016 - is ON!

Post by plummy »

OK, I know it's mostly a copy and paste of last year's announcement but the framework is going to be the same this year as last:

Hi all - after a couple of discussions with Jane about whether the Madchester Team Day could be accommodated again, the basic answer is yes - depending on:

1) Whether people are interested enough to want to come along and enjoy the shenanigans/get together/beer/cake/BBQ/tenting. If you are new to the team and have no idea what I am talking about, please feel free to search the forum for the previous Madchester event threads.
We are south Manchester (UK based) to give anyone new a geographical pinpoint (and only 10 mins from Manchester Airport (code - "MAN"))

As it stands we have no dates other than we initially thought somewhere "May~June". Having just thought that, I then read that Christine Wojcik (my double World Record partner in crime) is going to be in the UK from March 29th for maybe a couple of weeks (TBC) and I thought.."if only we could align the planets and arrange it around her visit" That may be a bridge too far but I'd like to throw it out there for feedback. (Barbara - the flights are MUCH cheaper from CA in April  )

We are announcing this a bit early as people are probably already booking holidays and I thought the more notice the better and obviously if anyone wants to fly in, the earlier you book, the cheaper it is. (I'm happy to do airport shuttle runs again)

So, shout up if you are interested by posting on here and we'll see f we can make it another day to remember :D :D

Remember, you are all welcome so even if new and a bit wary of turning up at a strangers house to put in your first row in front of a (small) crowd, don't be - you'll get nothing but support (then burgers, cake and maybe a beer of three)

Count me in, I came to every Madchester event so far, so wouldn't want to miss this one!

As for the dates, the only April date I could make would be the last one (29.04 - 01.05.). What's the weather usually like in Manchester in April  All June/July weekends would be fine, too.

The Underwoods would like to come please. :D :D

Weekends that we would be available:

2nd and 3rd April
16th and 17th April
30th of April and 1st May
7th and 8th May
14th and 15th May
28th and 29th May
4th and 5th June
11th and 12th June
16th and 17th July

At a push, we could also do the following weekends but it would mean a repeat of last year - bringing the erg across a couple of days beforehand and Richard arriving about lunchtime on the Saturday:

23rd and 24th April
21st and 22nd May
23rd and 24th July

Jill and Richard :) :)

As long as dates work, I'd love to come this year. Count me in - finger's crossed.

Ok my plans are not fixed yet but I think the only weekend I will be able to detour from my sightseeing is April 9. Obviously would love to meet everyone. My trip will mostly be visiting Scotland plus a couple of days in London. What kind of touristy things are there to do near Manchester? Eldest child (who is almost 21) will be with me. She is mostly interested in art and history ("castles")...rowing not so much.
Christine - 46, 5'8" lightweight...only when I really need to be.

Any progress in finalizing a weekend?

Jack & I looked at fares (arbitrarily picked last weekend of april as the test). They weren't ridiculous. The flight is 10+ hours, which gives me the shudders, but... wouldn't rule it out for that reason.

Just curious!

Hi Barbara,
No real decision other than we both kinda decided that late March/Early April was too risky re the weather (and it'll be dark earlier). This means that aligning the event with Christine being over isn't going to happen (although we are more than happy to have them visit whilst they are over here).

Beyond that, we haven't picked a date as the take up on people saying they would like or intend to attend has been quite low and at present not sufficient to warrant making it happen. Your attendance would change that dynamic greatly.

Looking at Peter's ability to attend, the weekend of the 29th April~1st May was good for him so that's one for sure and the Underwoods have said that works for them too so that's 5 with Jane and I (7 with you guys). For sure there would be others so let's ask the direct question to those pondering - Does Saturday 30th April work as a date for you? - please advise asap as the sooner people travelling know, the lower the flight costs.

Thanks for your work on planning a date, Dave :!: 8)

Just had a few searches for flight tickets, quite cheap on the way to MAN on Sat 30th April, a bit more expensive for the return, but still reasonable, and I might find some creative solution still there... So for now - that date would be OK for me... :D

9th/10th April; I didn’t include this as an available date because although I’ll be at home, Richard will be away for the whole weekend.

It would be a great pleasure to meet Christine, so if you do manage to arrange a get together, would it be okay to be included? I’d be happy to stay overnight somewhere. Must stress though, that if you would prefer to keep it ‘ family ‘, that’s okay, I quite understand. :)

You do realise that the average temp in May last year was 9.6 degrees. Not ideal BBQ weather but great rowing weather.
But if you are still having a BBQ I have done one in the snow before today.

Count me in.

I'd need to check when I get home from my travels at the end of next week, but I'm pretty sure I'm ok for April 30th.

Guys and Gals - I need a quick response to this. Barbara (Camicrew) and Jack (her better half) have flights held for I guess about 12 more hours for the weekend of the 7th/8th to come over and take part in Madchester 2016. From the notes I have, it works for Peter and for Jill and Richard but I need to know if it works for others as well.

If Barbara commits, then the date becomes fixed (and she needs to know asap)

I'll flag this up on the FS FB page too.

I couldn't make that weekend as it's a long one for me (May 5th is a holiday in Germany and I have to take the Friday off) and we have made plans already for that one.

I should be ok (again, as long as work doesn't spill - but it shouldn't). It's my Mum's birthday that weekend, but I'm sure she'll understand.

Hi all -- we are really, really REALLY excited about this trip! :D

But bummed to see the 7/8 weekend doesn't work for Peter... the 4/30 date is tight for us, and beyond mid May has work conflicts.

So what I've done -- in case it helps! -- is to adjust our dates to cross 2 weekends -- may 7/8 and may 14/15 -- no fare change.

We will arrange our other travels around what works best for the FS day.

Sorry Plummy, if that's extra sorting! but maybe more flexibility. [-o<

Kudos to Dave & Jane for taking on the event planning, it's tough work!
