February ctc - 3 x 7' / 5'r, the slowest to count

Post by Grobi »

Team Row Pro Rowers has chosen the ctc for February:

"Lucky 7

Row for 3 x 7 minutes with 5 minutes rest between reps. All standing starts. Record your lowest distance for 7 minutes."

So only the slowest rep counts. Any ideas how to pace this one?

I used to do 4 x 2k with 5' rest or more usually 7 mins rest as part of the Wolverine Plan a few years ago.

That was done around 2k+ 5 pace, as this is one less rep maybe 2k + 4 ?

Time will tell but what the devil is my 2k these days now that's the question ?

The answer, of course is: evenly. :P

I fear multiple tries will be required to get there.

I figure maybe 2k + 2 pace. Not based on anything scientific, just gut feel.

If your 2k is around 7 min, then this CTC is a lot like the one from Dec 2013:

Team Oarsome's Christmas Gift
Row 3 * 2000 metres, 3 minutes rest.
The rules are: free rate, free drag, and the slowest of the three counts.

So looking back to those results may help: http://www.c2ctc.com/index.php?c_id=102

I was very out of shape that month and didn't attempt the CTC. But the distances posted by some of our team mates suggest that it would be a lot slower than 2k + 2 pace. Having said that, 5 minutes rest versus 3 minutes allows a lot better recovery between intervals.

I think I might try 2k + 3 for my first attempt and see how that goes. Hopefully I'll be able to find a decent erg in one of the places I'm staying sometime early next month.

Newbie question here...

When can we start working on this? Last month was my first CTC and I started out the new year sick so I didn't even try it until well into the month. I gave this a try this morning to set a baseline for myself.

As you can attempt it as many times as you like it always seems a good idea to set down an early 'marker' for the CTC. This month especially as it's so hard to judge the pace - at least 2 or 3 attempts will be required to get it right. I also tried it today - will post the gory details soon

I definitely plan many attempts at this. Last month I only did it twice. I think I need to rephrase my question... I am operating on the assumption that this morning's attempt will count since it is February. Is that correct? I know I can do better but if life throws me lemons can I count today's attempt? Since the January CTC is still up and I don't see the February one I wanted to check.

I'll post my gory details later, too.

Correct, Kirstin. If rowed in February, you're all good.
The new challenge usually gets put up there around 12 am GMT on the 1st of a month. Apparently, it's gotten a bit later today.

Even though the site still has the January challenge up, I decided to swap my planned Pete Plan waterfall (3k/2.5k/2k) for the 3x7min from a standing start.

I aimed for 1925m (1:49.0 pace) but I failed miserably in the last interval

Image

Fighting the HD demons from 1000m into the third interval. Dropped pace to 1:58, then took it up in the last minute to at least get it above 1900m. Still tired I guess from my race on Saturday.

Very difficult challenge this as you have to pick your target pace before you start and then try to prove yourself right (or wrong!)

Got it a bit wrong myself but should get to around 1980m with better pacing

Here's my first try. Should be able to make some significant improvement over the month. Not sure what to aim for next time. Image

In case this helps anyone with pacing here's my effort from this morning compared to my current (last 4 weeks) 2k and 5k paces:

2k pace = 1:53.9
5k pace = 2:01.3

3x7'/5'r:
1:59.9
1:59.8
1:59.7

I was working hard so not sure I could have gone much faster.

Good luck to everyone still to give it a go

Barbara - see you on the leaderboard

I paced my effort off of my 5k, but I think I can do a fair bit better. My 5k pace on 1/19 was 2:27.3 and was a maximum effort piece for me. I don't have a true 2K TT yet, but am planning on one for Friday. My pacing for the 3x7'/5'r was:

2:26.5
2:26.2
2:26.1

So it was just below my 5k pace, but it was just a trial run and not a major effort like the 5k. I've been back to rowing for 8 weeks now after 20 years off so my fitness level is improving rapidly at this point. Makes it hard to figure out how to pace things. I'm thinking of aiming for a 2:25 pace when I try this again. Any and all feedback on that welcome.

Really solid progress at the eight week mark, Kristin! 2:25 sounds like a good next target.

Great pacing recap, Amanda. Our structured training calendar arrived today - means I have to sub this in as Sander did. The day that's caught my eye is this one: [ 2000m Test on the erg 100% ] + [High Aerobic 80% mhr ] : 2x 20' @ r20-22 :~c

Nice early markers to the rest of you tackling this one, as well. =D>

Cheers.

I think Kristin [ehr, Kirstin] is going to end up doing 2:22 or faster. But what do I know. I'm waiting for more brave people to go first so I can make a good stab  I won't do it more than twice, and hoping for once.

Here's my first shot at it. Seems to indicate I can do it faster though I started the third set at a 1:56 pace and had to slow down with about 3 mins left. At least I get to hang out in Boat 2 for a bit! :D

Be one of the brave ones. Jump in, the water is fine. :D

And, thanks. I'll see what I can accomplish by the end of the month. I want to try it at least twice more.

Couldn't resist giving it a first go. Had a choice of 4 workouts today and a lighter one was in order, but I was too curious how this would feel.

1:59.6
1:59.7
... and the oh geez, this is hard...

Ouch - That third one certainly looked like it hurt! I reckon your pacing was about right - having done it it certainly felt closest to a 5k so with your 5k pace a tad faster than mine I think your pacing for the first couple was spot on. Maybe try again in a week or so when you're well rested? Still, good effort, it's a tough session for sure and the 'pressure' of keeping the pace consistent for the 3 reps is unusual!
