26 September: 7684m JVB memorial CTC row
It has been mentioned elsewhere on this forum, but to maximize participation, I thought a separate thread could help.
To commemorate the life of Joan Van Blom, there will be a one day CTC on Saturday, the 26th of September. The challenge is the same as the monthly CTC of September 2014. The following text is taken from the C2 Logbook group on Facebook:
The greatest female rower in US History, Joan was a three-time US Olympian: silver in the 1x in 1976; on the 1980 squad that was deprived of medal opportunities when the US decided to boycott the Games; silver again in the 4x in 1984.
Many of you on this Forum knew her from indoor rowing, where she was equally redoubtable. As of yesterday she held ten standing world erg records:
60-69 FLW 10000m 41:49.2
55-59 FLW 2000m 7:30.6
50-54 FLW 2000m 7:22.6
50-59 FLW Half-Marathon 1:27:01.2
60-69 FLW Half-Marathon 1:29:02.7
50-59 FLW 30 Minutes 7518m
60-69 FLW 30 Minutes 7243m
50-59 FLW 60 Minutes 14795m
60-69 FLW 60 Minutes 14200m
50-59 FLW 6000m 23:39.8
This was actually down one record from the 2014-15 season, when she also held the 60-60 FLW 5000m erg record (since broken).
Warm, personable, beautiful, vivacious, couragous and unbelievably committed in everything she set her formidable sights on, Joan was a competitor, a teammate of mine both on this Forum (Team Oarsome) and on various C2 US Indoor Rowing squads, a friend both to me and to many, many Forumites whom she met at BIRC, EIRC, Crash-B, and other competitions, a fabulous ambassador not only for the sports of OTW and OTE rowing but for women's place in sport, and a remarkable, irreplaceable person. She will be missed.
Last year, when we first learned of the cancer that would eventually claim Joan, the September CTC Challenge was dedicated to her as the Joan Van Blom Cancer Awareness Row. This year there will be another commemorative row, this time a special one-day event on her birthday, September 26. Please watch the CTC thread for details. But most likely 7684m (words above borrowed from Jon Jonathan Bone )

26 September: 7684m JVB memorial CTC row
Ironically, mine is the first entry for Free Spirits with a somewhat pathetic 31:45.7. This has temporarily put us at the top of the standings! Since I am the only boat member and the boat average is higher than the keen teams who have more rowers in already.
Enjoy it while it lasts.

I was hoping to get closer to 1:50 but for a one day challenge you just have to go with how you're feeling on the day

I was planning on doing this but it's finally cooled off and the desire to give a 60 min TT struck at the last moment. Ended up being a good decision as it was a PB and first 16k+ hour. If no one has an objection and it's within the "guidelines" I'll use my avg split for this.

Very strong Hour of Power Dan.
I don't see any problem with using your average split to put in a time for the JVB challenge.
I also had a go at the challenge (but did 7684m and no further ) and managed 29:28.6. This is almost 30 seconds slower than my time for this challenge in September 2014, but the important thing was to get it done.
15 Free Spirits have entered times so far - more than any other team.

Will be joining a group online for this at 22:00 -- I think I've convinced Christine to join as well.
That'll be a couple more.

Forum gremlins? Maybe related to HD demons but less evil, more mischievous. Maybe try using Preview before you submit? Just a thought.
We had a good row. For me it ended up 7684m 32:35.6 at 2:07.2 pace.
Rest in peace Joan.

How did it end? I lookd this morning but the results have already gone, and I can't see a way of seeing past events. Last time I looked, Plummy was all alone in a FS IV

I think this link should bring you to the results http://www.c2ctc.com/index.php?c_id=126JonT wrote:How did it end? I lookd this morning but the results have already gone, and I can't see a way of seeing past events. Last time I looked, Plummy was all alone in a FS IV

There were 101 people who did the challenge, including 19 Free Spirits. Dougie seems to have closed the entries quite early - usually he allows until midday the following day, but maybe that's just for the regular monthly challenges.

Jon, in the top left hand corner, under Cross Team Challenge, you will see current challenge. Click on the arrow and the title of yesterday's CTC should appear. Click on that to see the final results ... Apologies in advance if I have misunderstood your query.
