Yes, it should make a slight difference. Paul's Law suggest a difference of 2.7 seconds. Psychologically it might be a bit more than that. Not sure why - the power of suggestion, maybe?

Decided on CTC today and choose a pace that would give me a time that I would be happy with at the end of the month. Happy with the result and gives me the chance to go for sub 16 min later in the month.

I had done a 18:40.8 previously which was part of a 5k at Madchester. My overall pace for the 5k was quicker than the first 4810m though. As I was uncertain about the ctc rules whether it's allowed to prorate from a longer piece or not (I think Paul opened a can of worms on facebook about that topic) I decided to have a proper stand alone attempt yesterday.

My old ctc pace for the 18:40.8 was 1:56.5, the prorated pace for the 5k was 1:56.0. So my plan was to start a bit slower than 1:56, maybe 1:56.5, and then slowly speed up until 1k to go and then be at 1:56.0 pace. I would then have a whole 1k to better that pace (or a whole 1k to suffer and talk to the h/d demons  ).

That's how it went:

1000 / 1:56.3 / 28 / 163
2000 / 1:56.4 / 28 / 170
3000 / 1:56.2 / 27 / 176
4000 / 1:55.5 / 28 / 182
4810 / 1:50.8 / 29 / 189

Total: 18:28.6 / 1:55.2

The first 2k went pretty much according to plan, although the heart rate was a bit high for my liking. I then remembered our technique workshop at madchester and tried to concentrate on technique. This had to effects: my pace was quicker with a lower stroke rate and I was distracted from the pain  After 4k (so a bit later than planned) I was at 1:56.0 exactly and I still felt "fresh" enough to speed up for a finish sprint. Very happy with my time below 18:30 (sorry Alan :fswink: ) and looking at my end heart rate I think that was as fast as I could do yesterday. Looking forward :^o to the scorpion challenge now...

I have waited with this one until the very last day. On the water rowing is just a higher priority right now. Thinking that there would inevitably come a day in June where I would be stuck to the erg room due to weather, travel or time pressure, I never really sat down to do it.

So today was not ideal but just the last chance. An on the water session scheduled for 6pm in the quad (probably 3 or 4 times a 2k at 28spm), so I had to do it either before or after. A morning session would have been ideal, but I was too lazy to do it. So I deserted from Home office, sat down, did a quick warming up and went off.

The plan was to start at 2:00 pace and speed up by a second each 500m. I rowed 100% according to plan. It didn't feel hard, even though the heart rate graph suggests it was.

I have decided that my PM5 is telling me I shouldn't be attempting this challenge. Every time I do the workout results don't record.

So all I have is a dodgy photo that says 19:08.7. Consolidates a place in FS VI, and raises our boat a rank.

Must say it's a bit warm for an all out effort row
