That's the 'Thanksgiving to Christmas' challenge anyway isn't it? In which case I'm hoping to be on for it..... :) assuming I ever get to a stage when kids are well, work is sane & life is simple....

Otherwise Dave's 200m sounds a better bet! :D

For once, I am not rowing and am browsing the forum....wow, I chose this over watching the late news.....what has become of me.... :?

anyway...back last season when I was trying sooo hard to stack up my 10k per day to win a pair of C2 socks in the March Madness event.......I noticed one of the selected winners was from the Luna-tics....she is no longer on the team...however this season it consists of 5 rowers with an accumulated total of 1+million meters.....since their goal is to reach the moon....has anyone contacted them to join us in pursuit of the moon???? They have a much better chance of getting there if they join us.....

I will be happy to make the effort to contact each of them, if no one else has.....just let me know if any of you have contanced them or not....and I will.....as we honor all meters to reach the moon.....

Not sure I like the sound of bashing one out at the end of a session!

OK - 200m - I'll fit one in along the way!

Tricia - I started along the quest of inviting small teams to join us. Found a couple of "teams" with one person in and invited them - one did join.

I was after the Milion Metre Vikings - a team of 4 Germans - but I never got round to emailing them. What do you think guys?

I think that is a bit harsh! :( I just looked at our daily metres and thought that the moon was an "interesting" target. This is Free Spirits - we are free to watch the moon sail away in to the distance if we want. Noone has to take part. But I can see some people are taking it very seriously. 8)

As for Mars. Hmmm. That is a long, long, long way - I suspect that the total metres rowed on Concept 2s in the World each year might be about right.

Is Mars that far?

How long do NASA (Not A Safe Airline) think it will take to get there? Three years perhaps?

How many members do we need to beat NASA there?

Oops  the figures below are all wrong. Thanks Mike...

I was interested in the true figures after my estimate. I know that Mars is a long long long way away but the truth staggered me.

Earth  Moon is approximately 384,403,000m.

Earth  Mars at its closest is 55,760,000,000,000m.

So, assuming that we get to the moon, we only need to go around 145,000 times further the following year to get to Mars (at it's closest).

Now, call me a pessimist, but I think getting around 30 million members of Free Spirits by April 1st 2007 is a tiny bit optimistic.

Well, there is more atmosphere than the moon! The moon has no atmosphere at all. Mars actually clings to a thin coat of gas that allows for dust storms etc.

Ooops. There's the teacher in me coming out...

Gonna have to be pedantic here, T W-P, but your Mars number is 1000 times too big.

Earth Moon Distance - 384,403,000m (or 384 thousand km)
Earth Mars Distance - 55,760,000,000m (or 55.76 million km)*

* as of 2003 closest approx. It won't actually be this close again for another 60,000 years. Erk

You put down 55,760,000,000,000m (or 55.76 billion km). This is about 10 times the average distance from the sun to Pluto (which used to be a planet, but now isn't certain!) at 5,888,940,000,000m. Otherwise known as a LOOOONG WAY.

Or course all this gets put into perspective by distances like light years (the distance it takes light to travel in one year).

Now light travels at 186,000 miles a second. Or 299,274,000m a SECOND. So the moon is just over a light-second away. Mars (at closest recent approach) is about 3 light-minutes away. Pluto is about 5.5 light-hours out. The nearest star is 4.3 light years, or in meters: 40,593,079,912,320,000m.

Oh, everyone seems to have fallen asleep...

OK. Oops. Lucky I am not a teacher of, er, physics or anything . I blame that knackering rugby test...

Lets try again...

Earth  Moon is approximately 384,403,000m.
