Big Dave K's 24 hour event - locked - see new thread...
FS Moderator: Bumped to the top because we need volunteers
I'm organising a sponsored row at my university for december. we're aiming to row a million metres in 24 hours on 3 ergs. would it be cheating to log those metres towards rowing to the moon? might help out a bit. im not a bit metres fanatic, so you probably wont be seeing many from me. if i do 20k a week, i'd be surprised
Added by Thomas W-P: Free Spirits have decided to try and raise a "Virtual" team to take part in this event. We have filled all the slots for day 1 (to "race" Big Dave K's team). But some nutters/enthusiasts have suggested we try and row 1 million in three days.

Wow. 1 million meters on 3 ergs in 24 hours means nearly 14k an hour (13,888m) for every hour of 24 on all 3 ergs. Constant splitting of approx. 2:09 - That will take some serious work!
Will also help a lot on the moon journey, so sounds good to me!

it took some serious thinking to decide on the challenge. we wanted to do 24 hours as it maximises the time people see us, and so might give us a bit of their change in donations. it also has a bit of the 'wow' factor in that most people probably wouldnt be able/inclined to do it. at first we looked at the world and british records for 24 hr rows, but they would take some seriously low splits from people and the idea of 10 strokes hard relay racing for an hour really didnt appeal. so we decided 1million metres had a nice ring to it, i worked out it was possible on 3 machines, and could even lead to quite an exciting last couple of hours to reach the target.
we're also, hopefully, getting tim foster (ex-brunel student and has rowed a bit) down to officially start it off, so should get some publicity there, and it's being done right outside the SU bar, so we can convince drunk students it's a good idea to give us their money instead of wasting it on snakebite...

Mr Big Dave, there are quite a few of us in London during the working week who might be able to offer a guest spot if you need them?
I also know one Dan Darley who with his partner holds the two man million metre record. Dan and Rich did it in a shade over 3 days, on one machine with an average split of 2:10/500m.
He might be persuaded to turn up and encourage you if it helps?

thanks for the offer. we'll be rowing from tuesday evening through to wednesday, so feel free to pop down and give encouragement. we're sorting out teams from members of the club, however, so probably no guest spots going. we thought we might as well have a race if we're going to be putting some effort in!

Big Dave - make sure you get as many of them as possible signed up as Free Spirits - we WILL get Thomas to the moon!
How many people are going to be in each team. Thinking about this, it'll be pretty easy if the team is 8 people or so, but MUCH harder as the team gets smaller.
Graham (webberg) - Can you get Dan to sign up as a Spirit? Would be interesting to hear his thoughts on such an achievement!
Team: Anyone out there feel like taking on that record? 500,000m over 72 hours (36 hours rowing), paced at 2:10... Would be cool for the Free Spirits to hold a world record!!!
Team: anyone think we could get a Free Spirits team together and see if we could challenge the youngsters from Brunel? (I'm thinking we'd probably only get a single team together - go for 333,333m in 24 hours, but I reckon we could do it!)

now this makes things interesting!! obviously we wouldn't be putting all our big hitters on one team, as that would make the inter-club race a bit boring, but if there's a challenge laid down, i'll get my team on it. we're aiming for about 8-10 in each team, so a 1 min sprint at a time would be possible for a while to keep those splits down. not sure about whether we'll do that in the small hours of the morning, probably be on the erg for a while so we can be off it and tucked up in a sleeping bag for a lot longer!!

Good work Big Dave.
Apologies if i have mis read, where is your uni?
Re adding meters I'm sure you can act as the single point for others, this is within C2 rules and if memory serves me correctly there maybe something on your profile or on the site that recognises this (I think it was originally aimed at health clubs and schools but see no reason why FS can't benefit)

Big Dave is at Brunel (cos it says so in his main C2 profile)
Interesting point about posting 'team' meters - we may need to look into that. Not certain it'll work with the meter board though, and would definitely better to get everyone on independently!

I can't see us managing to get together even a single erg worth on a weekday as we have too many working people. Maybe a possibility of getting a bunch of us to do a weekend session. I'm probably not going to be able to do either of the first two in December though as I'm planning to race at WeIRC and IIRC.

I had a "bright" idea when posting on the C2 forum.
We *could* enter a team to challenge big dave k - but a virtual/global one...
"Rowing round the world" - we could have set times to row and track the metres in a forum thread.
Now, we would probably have more team members than big dave k, but we might be able to give them something to race, rowing, say an hour each.
Since the next day is a school day, I (I guess like many UK people) could do anything between 7:00 GMT and midnight, then I wouldn't mind chipping in early in the morning. Now, I have not dared mention this to my better half - so is anyone else going to join in and suggest an hour they could do?
(Or tell me it is a terrible idea )
