The Boys in the Boat
I've just finished reading this book by Daniel Brown. It's about a group of university rowers from Seattle who were trying to qualify for the Olympic games in Berlin in 1936. One of the best books I've read in ages and a must read for anyone interested in rowing, particularly those taking part in (or considering taking part in) OTW rowing.
Can't recommend it highly enough.

Re: The Boys in the Boat
Fantastic book. Couldn't put it down... there was heavy detail in places, but more as an indication of the thorough research done by the author. Nice trailer:
I enjoyed the two references I spotted to rowing machines, as well. So interesting that as the games approached "cross training" was forbidden, with the coach stopping the boys from too much swimming. Then on the boat to Germany, they had to sneak in rows on the erg when he wasn't around. He was adamant that their muscles be specialized only to rowing in the boat. Times have changed!
Overall, what a testament to inner strength and teamwork. Loved it.

I read and thoroughly enjoyed as well. Here's a great quote from the book.
“It’s not a question of whether you will hurt, or of how much you will hurt; it’s a question of what you will do, and how well you will do it, while pain has her wanton way with you.”

Wonderful book (and hopefully movie someday soon). Thanks for the trailer, Barbara, and the memorable quote, Dan. Tom Brokaw called the people of that era the "Greatest Generation". Tough as nails, they were. I love that the story connects the hardship of the depression with rowing against the backdrop of WWII.

I too have just read this book. Superb, i could not put it down. I have been through the appendix and found this site where you can hear a couple of the crew, Bob Moch and Roger Morris speaking about the Olympic final. There arealso other newsreel type films of the crew in action.
