Carole McNally Memorial CTC
Just a quick reminder that this takes place tomorrow in honour of the late Carole McNally, who was a larger than life character who broke a number of world records and had enormous enthusiasm for the sport.
The challenge is a straight 1402m to be entered on the CTC website tomorrow. On the ISS forum, someone was asking if it would be OK to do the challenge this evening and enter the result online tomorrow. This was considered to be acceptable, so I think it would be OK for anyone who won't have access to an erg tomorrow. If you do it after midday today (GMT), it will already be February 14th in New Zealand when you're doing it.
We floated three boats last year, so let's see if we can improve on that.

Okay, so this says 1402 meters. Should that be 14,002???? 14,020??? 14,200???Paul Victory wrote:Just a quick reminder that this takes place tomorrow in honour of the late Carole McNally, who was a larger than life character who broke a number of world records and had enormous enthusiasm for the sport.

And do the meters need to be exact, or anything more than the prescribed number?
I had to Google her name to learn a little about her. Can anyone give a little more? The online hits that I got really didn't give a lot of detail.
I'm new to this universe so my apologies for not knowing.
Oh, and is it okay if the row is RFS (really feckin' slow) in order to post to CTC - my back is acting up so no hard pulls for a while.

Re: Carole McNally Memorial CTC
It is only 1402m - around 5 minutes or so. Here's a quote from Facebook
"Carole McNally burst onto the Indoor Rowing scene in 2003 and quickly became a force to be reckoned with, winning medals at both national and international level. But it was her unwavering enthusiasm, determination and good humour that enriched many peoples lives.
"When you have confidence you can have a lot of fun. And when you have fun you can do amazing things."

Re: Carole McNally Memorial CTC
I did my first try today after 5pm mountain time, so after midnight Feb 14th UTC. What I did was create a 2k workout with the split distance set to 1402. That way I did the CTC row and a 2k time trial at the same time. This was just testing the waters, so I had the drag low and I'd already done a fair amount of exercise earlier in the day.
I'm attaching the C2 Utility output: 6:29.2 for the first 1402m @ 131W. I'll try again early tomorrow, as my 1km time says I should be able to do better.
Before I rowed, I watched the video on the FB page for the CTC event. It was very moving.

Ron, it's 1402 because of the date of her passing.mardix wrote:Okay, so this says 1402 meters. Should that be 14,002???? 14,020??? 14,200???
10k (or 45 min) is about the longest that is allowed for a CTC, so we will never see any of your 14k+ suggestions (sadly or not).
Sure, do the pace that suits your needs. That's true for every CTC, but this one in particular.mardix wrote:Oh, and is it okay if the row is RFS (really feckin' slow) in order to post to CTC - my back is acting up so no hard pulls for a while.
Having said that, I will be trying to get in a floating boat today, but I fear that may turn out to be impossible.
Good idea, Peggy!K_Cat wrote:What I did was create a 2k workout with the split distance set to 1402. That way I did the CTC row and a 2k time trial at the same time.

Yes, please. Take take. Participation is everything. You only have "one health". Better to participate all CTC's, then only one and then be "out of order".mardix wrote:Oh, and is it okay if the row is RFS (really feckin' slow) in order to post to CTC - my back is acting up so no hard pulls for a while.

If anyone is interested, Anne Bourlioux has set up a RowPro session at 5 p.m. GMT. There are 14 participants at present (including me), so two slots remaining.

Re: Carole McNally Memorial CTC
Just back from my rather cold garage having had a bash at this. Did it with a focus on lower SPM (30, rather than 35) but 'bigger' pulls - concentrating on really thrusting with my legs. Worked wonders for the first 600m - 1:36 happily - then shelved off rather fast! Ended up at 26spm and 1:43 - but it just shows how much that side of my fitness needs a lot of work.
Anyway, ended up with an acceptable 4:43.6

Re: Carole McNally Memorial CTC
Weird - I posted earlier and it's disappeared!!
I couldn't do tis last year as I was travelling to Germany for the million metres and didn't dare a late evening row after I got there so I was determined to get a time in this time around.
Managed a <1:50 split average for the first time in ages at anything above 500m ( 5:07.7 = 1:49.7 ) so I'm very pleased with that and having erg cough for the first time in ages tells me I pushed it pretty darned hard.

Re: Carole McNally Memorial CTC
Okay, so first attempt ended in 5:20 (1:54). I haven't rowed under 2:00 at any distance in a long time and I wasn't going to even attempt to do it this time - there's just something about a challenge that makes me throw caution to the wind, I suppose. Once started I decided to see if I could get to 1:58, then 1:57, and finally settled in at 1:55 and held it there. We'll see tomorrow if this was a good thing or sub-intelligent.
Regardless, that's pretty cool for me, I've held myself back for a long time not wanting to upset the Gods.

Well done! It's funny how an element of competition (and team spirit) can make you throw caution out the window!

Really enjoyed this distance and managed to get my average splits under 1:50. Hopefully if I keep at it I'll manage a sub 7 2000m sometime this year.

Re: Carole McNally Memorial CTC
13 FS entries so far, not bad... only Sub 7 has one more than us.
My goal was to improve on my time from last year (5:06.7). My stretch goal was to go under 5 min.
I achieved the first one (just), but got nowhere near the second one.

Always nice to see so many Free Spirits taking part in this CTC each year. Illness and night shifts made this more unpleasant and slower than it should have been for me. Think in current form sub 1:35 pace should have been straight forward on another day.

Re: Carole McNally Memorial CTC
I had number in mind which I thought I possibly could do, but I was not sure if it's just wish/dream or if it's realistic.
First I did a modified 20' fletcher warmup. After that I relaxed for some minutes. Then I setup the PM… and rowed my plan. Key points: Slow down after 300m, find your breathing rhythm! Did it. Everything went smooth.
1402m | 4:40.0 | 1:39.8 | 27 SPM
Sidenote: Limitation is still my breathing rhythm (or capacity?), not "heavy legs/muscles by lactate". But… it became way better. But my lungs feel like heavily scrubbed with steel wool.

Found a RowPro session with 10 minutes to spare. Changed, warmed up and set up. Closely matched with the other rowers which pushed me a bit harder than I probably would have gone on my own today.

I also did a RowPro session. Usual loss of around a second at the start and a bit slower than I was looking for, but 4:47.4 @ 1:42.5 was reasonably OK and should get me a seat in FS2 (depending on who else enters a time today).

=D> 3 Cheers for Carole!
Did not know her... but admire those people whose personalities shine bright enough to inspire entire communities. Last year for me was a 5:47.7 at a 2:04 split... memory is hazy but I think I did it as a warmup or cooldown? This year was a 5:29.7 at 1:57.5 split and rate 32. I'm happy to see sub-2:00 -- having finally emerged [-o< from bronchitis, and a week of visitors and not enough erg time! Spent a wonderful morning on the lake in an 8+ and then a few hours of beach volleyball in a February heat wave.
Congratulations to all who put in a time!
Edit: Checked the standings and our stint in the #2 spot was a short one! Great to see the participation this year... 33 boats vs 21.

Re: Carole McNally Memorial CTC
I managed to get this one done today, despite lots of time clearing snow before the next blizzard hit!
With no speed sessions this week, I wasn;t really sure what pace to row. I figured around 1:42. But of course, with high hopes and adrenaline, I went off faster. I knew by 200m, that the 1:40 pace I was holding was no going to work. I wasn't sure if I had done too much damage with it. I slowed down to around a 1:44, with a 1:45 popping up now and again. By the time there was 500m left, I had recovered my wind and my pride and started to pull down the splits.

I'm pretty disappointed. Maybe with a proper warmup I could have done better. I really would have like to have been around 1:40. Oh well.
But it was nice to see 4 complete boats from Free Spirits and 25 rowers participating.
