Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
so I restarted rowing in April 2015 last year, but didnt do nonathlon for 2016. is it possible to give you some times (all the way from 500m to 60', but not HM or FM) to use as the basis for comparison
do I need to enter them into nonathlon 2016 - and i sthat even possible given it was last season
I just entered my May/June times for 2017 and asked Stan to add me to the team so I might not be affiliated yet
Cheers

If someone did the nonathlon last season but wasn't affiliated to Free Spirits then, I don't have a problem using those numbers, but I do need nonathlon scores to make the comparison work (I have no involvement with the nonathlon itself or how those scores are calculated). I don't think you can enter scores for the 2016 nonathlon now.

Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
Fair enough - it was that I didnt enter the scores, not that I wasn't affiliated.
I will just have to go with the "new joiner" route although as a returning member I would have improved a lot this year

Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
A bit hit and miss. I should probably update the weight loss thread, but I had a few good days (where I behaved myself) followed by a few not so good days. Weight this morning was 98.8 kg, which is down 1 kg on my last weigh in, but still too close to 100 kg for comfort.strider77 wrote:How is the weight loss going ?

Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
So three to go for the clean sweep this year
Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
What does the team think of Clean Sweep = 100 pt bonus?

Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
Originally when I set this up, it had the same 100 point bonus for doing all distances that the nonathlon has (assuming that's what you mean by clean sweep). It was removed shortly after, because I thought the bonus was artificial and arbitrary and had too much impact on the total score (given the much smaller variation of scores in the meta-nonathlon compared to the nonathlon). Besides there's already a bonus in place for doing all distances: you get to drop your lowest score.DavidWray wrote:What does the team think of Clean Sweep = 100 pt bonus?
In short, I'm not in favour of it.

Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
Roger, I think what Rob is suggesting is slightly different to the automatic 100 point bonus that applies under nonathlon if you do all ten distances (although this would be converted to 10 points using your truncated points system). I think he's suggesting that the bonus would only be applied if you beat last year's score over all ten distances.
Personally, I find that the 100 bonus points under the regular nonathlon is often the main motivation for doing another ****** FM and I kind of like Ron's suggestion, although 100 points might be a bit excessive given that the meta nonathlon scores are based on a target of 100 rather than 1000.

Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
Not a fan of it. Too easy and tempting to sandbag the previous year to get the extra points or, just circumstances themselves (illness/injury from the previous year preventing full on efforts, in which case, the points per events in the current year should be enough).
Either that or the extra points should be only a handful - say 10?

Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
Ah, I see now what Rob and David meant. Clean sweep = green sweep.
It's an interesting idea. The main issue I have with it, is that a bonus would widen the gap between the ones already ahead and those behind. Plummy's argument is valid too.
My question is: would a small bonus give extra motivation to get all greenies?

Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
Just to clarify, I'm not asking for any bonus for getting a clean (green) sweep. The suggestion is from David.
You'll already be well up the leader board if you go green so no extra I bonus is needed. The motivation to go green is it looks good and you can give yourself a pat on the back for doing better than last year which is what I thought the metanonathlon was supposed to be about.
David's top slot is virtually unassailable this year given his great improvement in the HM. A bonus would be the only way to topple him, but it's too artificial.

Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
I agree that an all green 100 would be too much and you would expect to be at the top anyway. My suggestion for some other bonus discussion was to address my thought that someone all green should be ahead of me in points. My 138 HM seems out of bounds just because my first ever HM was such a poor showing last year. Has an upper limit to individual scores ever been discussed?

Re: Free Spirits meta-nonathlon
I don't think we have discussed an upper limit before. And I'm not sure it can be done without it becoming unfair in certain cases.DavidWray wrote:I agree that an all green 100 would be too much and you would expect to be at the top anyway. That "poor showing of a HM" that you did last year, still was real, wasn't it? So I don't have much of a problem with that leading to a high score for you on the HM this year.
Sandbagging is a different issue, but I would still prefer leaving it to the sportsmanship of the Free Spirits, rather than trying to regulate it with arbitrary limits that can feel unfair to the benevolent. If someone wants to 'game' the scores by deliberate sandbagging, I think that person misses the point of the meta-nonathlon, which I think is well worded in Mat's signature: "The principle is competing against yourself, about being better than the day before."
