Thanks for the update Roger. One of my targets for this season is to match or beat my nonathlon total for last season and it's nice to see that I'm almost there.

For anyone who is pushing their nonathlon and subsequent meta-nonathlon scores in these last three and a half weeks of the season.

Looks Like Felton's rowed off into the sunset with the medal, but that second spot is a close thing .....

I've just posted a new personal best for the 500m (01:35.9). Will it be enough to get me 2nd place though?

Hi Free Spirit Rowers, I was planning on joining your team for the new season. Should I enter my times for this season so I can participate in the meta next season?

Welcome to Free Spirits!

If you want to join the FS meta-nonathlon in the new season, it's necessary that your 2017 nonathlon scores can be compared to your 2016 scores. So the answer to your question is yes!

Your current nonathon score for the 500m is 912. It was 930 last season. 912/930=0.98. Orange is the right colour.

That's it for the 2016 season. :!:

And the winner of the meta-nonathlon is... FeltonH! ^O^ ^O^ ^O^ Who saw that coming?!
GuidonTheBee takes a silver medal. ^O^ ^O^ The bronze is for Rob C. ^O^

Special congrats are in order for six Free Spirits who managed to score over 900 points for the second year running. This score is significant because it indicates a continuous improvement which is especially hard to do. These six are: Rob C (who was the 2015 winner), danfennell (last year's runner-up), K_Cat (last year's bronze), plummy, RichLindner and sander. ^O^ But who can keep this streak running in 2017?

Arghh, thought I might have just grabbed silver, but that Bee Stings

Congrats to all that participated, and to Felton for paddling off so far into the lead.

And of course thanks Roger for maintaining a different stats challenge.

Thanks for doing this Rodger; very interesting stats and motivating. The real challenge for me will beat the good times I've set this season rather than the poor ones last season

I completely agree. Doing this has been fun and it gives an extra dimension to the nonathlon. My season;s goal was to have >900 nonathlon points per distance, and >900 points in this contest. Succeeded in both.

Now he tells me 900 is a benchmark! Well that can be my target for this year then. If I'd known I would have gone all-out on the 500m and tried to scrape three more points. #-o

Thanks, as ever, for doing all of this Rodger. =D>

Now that the 2017 season is a month underway, it's time to start a new Free Spirits meta-nonathlon season too! Here's a quick summary of the rules:

What is the Free Spirits meta-nonathlon?
The meta-nonathlon compares your nonathlon scores with those of your previous season. In essence, you are competing against your former self.
The scores will then be sorted into a Free Spirits meta-nonathlon ranking that shows who is doing the best job in improving on last year.

How does it work?
For every nonathlon distance (500m, 1k, 2k, etc.) and timed piece (30 min, 60 min) your 2017 nonathlon score will be divided by your 2016 score. The outcome is then multiplied by 100, giving a percentage as your score for that distance. So, managing a better score on a piece than in the previous season gives you a score over 100. The scores are rounded off to whole numbers, for easy-view purposes (showing decimals makes the sheet look messy). Just like in the nonathlon itself, the total score is calculated as the sum of the nine best individual scores (out of all 10). There is no bonus for doing all 10 distances though.

What if you didn't row all distances last year?
If you haven't entered a time/distance for a piece in the previous season, the score to beat will be equal to your highest score in that previous year. In my case, I didn't do a FM in the 2016 season. If I decide to do one in 2017, the 2016 benchmark is set at 857, which was my highest score in 2016 (for 30 min, in this case). There is a threshold of 5 ranked pieces though, so If you entered less than 5 nonathlon scores in the previous season, the benchmark for un-entered pieces will be set at 1000 instead of the highest ranked score. The sheet is sorted by the total score, so it still pays to do as much of the pieces as possible, even if you didn't enter a result in the season before.

What do you have to do to take part?
Nothing. Apart from the easy bit of course, the rowing. If you did the nonathlon last year and Stan has added your name to the Free Spirits filter group on that website this season, your name will pop up in the meta-nonathlon automagically.

Where is it?
I will occasionally post a picture of the table in this thread, but you can always view it here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
The left upper cell shows when the list was last updated. I'll try to update at least once a month, and hopefully more frequently.

What do the colours mean?
The cells are are colour coded:
- Dark green: over 2.5% better than last season (large improvement)
- Light green: less than 2.5% better than last season (small improvement)
- Yellow: exactly the same as last season
- Orange: less than 2.5% worse than last season (small decline)
- Red: over 2.5% worse than last season (large decline).
Because scores are rounded off, cells with a score of 100 can be either yellow, orange or light green.

Let's get going!
Out of the 21 Free Spirits that signed up to the nonathlon this year, I could connect 19 to last year's nonathlon. Only for David Holmberg and TomKat12111 I found no 2016 match.

So here's the first 2017 Free Spirits meta-nonathlon table:

Hi Rodger,

I would like to be added to the 2017 meta- do I need to do something to get placed in Stan's freespirits 'filter?'

Thank you,

Maybe Stan reads your request here, but the guaranteed way is to ask him to add you to the list in the nonathlon thread:
