April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
Sub 7 made their choice. Fasten your seatbelts, please - it might get complicated:
"3 Peaks Challenge
1344m (the height of Ben Nevis)
978m (the height of Scafell Pike)
1085m (the height of Snowdon)
Row these in any order you like, and take a total of 5 minutes rest, sliced any way you like........
Examples: 1344m - 3' rest - 978m - 2' rest - 1085m
978m - 2:30 rest - 1344m - 2:30 rest - 1085m
Take the total time for the 3407m, not including rests, and enter that as your score. First rep from a static start, rolling starts allowed on subsequent reps."
Leaves plenty of room for experiments - but I think I will go with the long rep first and the short one in the end (for a start )...

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
I am a bit surprised that Sub 7 don't want us to row the 'peaks' at different rates with time penalties.
It's a bit of a puzzle that will appeal to certain people (I'm okay with it) but I think can put others off. In terms of getting high participation this will be a challenge. Let's see if we can do well there.
I think my first try will be: 978m - r2:00 - 1085m - r3:00 - 1344m.

Do I detect a trend emerging in these CTC challenges?

Well that is interesting. Not exactly have an attempt and that is it.
Going to have to experiment a few ways with this one!
In my short time participating you certainly seem to get some good variety but I see it does put people off judging by historical participation.
Any merit in taking the rest as one lump?

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
We could follow the theme when it's our turn with an assault on Mt Everest from Base Camp thus:
Base Camp (5350m) to Camp 1 550m
Camp1 (5900m) to Camp2 600m
Camp 2 (6500m) to Camp 3 700m
Camp 3 (7200M) to Camp 4 800m
Camp 4 (8000M) to Summit 848m
Nice progressive reps with say 10 minute rest taken how you like. Total flat out distance 3498m. Record the "climbing" times total only and must be done in sequence. If we were feeling really cruel, we could do it as pyramid with 18 minutes total rest time.
Just a thought.

Hmm, I was looking forward to a more normal distance next month. Don't think I'll attempt this one either, the row probably won't take as long as it will take me to figure out how to set this up on my PM3.

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
You could do 2063m (978+1085), take 5:00 rest, and then 1344m, but I don't think that will result in a better overall time. Who knows, maybe someone wants to give that a go and report back.turkish79 wrote:Any merit in taking the rest as one lump?

I was having a think and I'll probably do the 978m+1085m together, then rest 5 mins, then the final 1344m.Rodger wrote:You could do 2063m (978+1085), take 5:00 rest, and then 1344m, but I don't think that will result in a better overall time. The good thing about the total of the smaller 2 rows is that they are very close to a 2k. The last 1344 might be a bit slow after that, but c'est la vie.
I think the PM3 will record the time after 2k for making it easier to log a 2k. Is this right?

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
I don't think it will unless you set it up as two intervals of 2k and 63m with no rest interval and I don't know if it will accept an interval of less than 100m.Gregor Andrews wrote:

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
I don't think you can set an interval within an interval's session rep. For example the whole session is set up as
2063m
5:00 rest
1344m
In this case you can't set any intervals for the 2063m or the 1344m. But you could still prorate your 2063m time down to 2000m and use it for the nonathlon.

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
I know not everyone is the same, but I would have thought the optimal way to do this would be 1344 - r3:00 - 1085 - r2:00 - 978m or maybe some variation on the rest times.
At least, that's the way I'm going to try it for my first attempt.

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
I did it as Paul said but probably went off a bit too fast:
13:53.4 3408 27 02:02.2
05:22.7 1344 28 02:00.0
04:26.7 1085 26 02:02.9
04:03.9 979 27 02:04.5
Positive split
Bill
I reckon that the guy in third place hit an extra key and Paul Buchanan had had a shower and gone home by the time I finished!

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
Well done, Bill =D> =D> It definitely looks hard with that positive splitting...
Had a go today, and took the salomonic decision to split rest periods in 2½´+2½´:
1: 1344m 4:22.8 1:37.7 33
r: 2½´
2: 1085m 3:30.4 1:36.9 34
r: 2½´
3: 0978m 3:07.1 1:35.6 35
T= 3407m 11:00.3 1:36.9 34
Pushing the pace gradually from rep to rep... Will surely have more goes at this one before the end of the month.

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
Looks like a hard fought session Bill and well done Erik for another storming performance. I was thinking that maybe a 50/50 split on the rest periods would be better than 60/40 because of the fact that you will already be tired starting the second interval.
I probably won't get a chance to do this until I get back from Alvor on April 19th as I want to complete the interval sessions in the final week of my second cycle of the PP before I head off on Saturday afternoon and tomorrow is my designated rest day.

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
I think Paul is correct, that doing it "waterfall style" from longest to shortest is most logical because one starts the first rep fully rested. I think I favour the 3 and 2 minute rest procedure but doing the shorter two together with the long one following a full five minute rest is also interesting. One thing I'm sure of though: thank goodness the distances are based on GB's relatively flat topography and not say, Nepal. Now that would be a lot of rowing.

Re: April CTC: 3 Peaks Challenge
I read in "CTC-how it works" thread that no matter your time you encourage people to post. I've been looking at people's times and playing with the pace calculator (though I don't think I really have enough experience to really predict this). It looks like my time would be no where near what people are posting. Just want to make sure it really helps the team to put in my time
I'm going to do the challenge later today; not sure I'll post it though.

Cowboygirl every time is good, your time not matter how bad you may think it is compared to everyone else could get Free Spirits an extra point by not leaving a boat 'on the shore' with not enough people in the boat. There is no reason to do it and not post your time, but it is your own choice. Everyone has to start off, you are getting involved and doing great, exactly what this team is all about and certainly why I joined.

OK, well that was an experience, and I took turkish's recommendation that no matter what the time it could help the team. I posted my time to the CTC board. So now I'm hanging out in a boat all by myself! Don't leave me alone too long, OK? Sorry I wasn't faster guys. Not hard to complete but hard to really know a good pace for myself coupled with different distances. But FUN, and learning more each time I row.

Well done Cowboygrrl, now you know what to expect next time you attempt it and have a target to beat. Don't worry about your relative performance against others, the toughest challenge is against yourself. I know that there are people that are a lot faster than me, but I have no control over this. If I row my piece or race to the best of my ability, leaving nothing in reserve then I am happy regardless of the outcome.

I have taken the opportunity to jump into boat 1 for a couple of hours then (tops).
I too did the waterfall option with two times 2:30 rest.
Fairly satisfied with how it worked out, although it was a bit hot in the 'suffer room' today. I will decide later this month whether there is much room for improvement or not.
