January Virtual Team Challenge
Hi everyone,
The January virtual challenge starts January 1st, finishing January 31st. I have just entered our team but as usual it requires you guys to sign up to take part (should you wish to that is - there is no compulsion to do so). You need to click on the team tab in your c2 online diary and sign up.

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
I think I am in, but don't remember clicking anything to do it.
We need a budding graphic designer to make a beautiful transparent 16px by 16px icon for meterboard2. Or pinch one from google. What should it be?

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
I'm signed up. I think you need to opt in on the team page.
It would great if we could back to where we were in 2012. We had more meters per person and a higher total.

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
Apparently this is the place to complain.
I've received an email and at the top it says :
"If this message contains abusive or other comments you
find offensive please contact the webmaster of the board"
And then a tirade from Stan about 'entering a challenge in January' and a 'golden opportunity to work off Christmas calories' on a C2 machine that I vaguely remember caused me nothing but pain every time I went near it.
Abusive? Yes
Offensive? Yes
Tempting? Erm, Yes, I'll have a go.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone

I'm in too, but I'm starting to feel the strain after doing almost 340k in the last 24 days for the Holiday challenge, so I don't think I'll be able to reproduce that level of performance. But 200k+ should be achievable.

This challenge has now begun and 85 of us have signed up so far. We are currently in 4th spot just behind Ancient Mariners but a long way behind the Lunatics and AWL.

We're up into 3rd and have opened a slight gap on the Ancient Mariners. A long long way behind the top 2 however.

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
Crikey! The French attacked hard! Where'd they come from?!?!?
Doing an hour tomorrow, so will hope to add another 15k.
Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. Lots of meters done for me - but oddly, not very well. I think not cycling 25 miles a day to work and back has had a detrimental effect on my rowing performance.
At least it means I'm looking forward to going back to work!!

Just under 17k for me today, all slow strapless rows, to bring my total to just over 50k to date.

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
I've added a new icon for this on the meterboard2:
I am no graphic designer, so if someone wants to make or find an appropriate 16x16 icon and post it here I can change it pretty easily.
The honour boards are only checked once a day, I don't think it needs to be more than that.

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
Bumping this one up as we have dropped from 3rd place to 6th, will add some metres tonight and may start two sessions as I do for the March-April World Rowing Challenge

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
Not only are we 6th, but there are big gaps between us and the top 5. Part of the problem is that. Number of our heavy hitters are not appearing on the team listing. I can't remember if I received an email reminder about this challenge, but it might be no harm to send another one ( without putting any pressure on anyone to sign up).

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
Has to be said that signing up for these challenges on C2 website is not the most straightforward process!
A reminder couldn't hurt.
I have no metres logged for this so far (and am not a big hitter) but my gym re-opens next Monday so I hope to start chipping in then.

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
We currently have 119 signed up which is about normal for these challenges for us. Everybody received a round robin email. I am not convinced another round robin would help and may even antagonise some people? I suppose it may be worth using the c2 mailing system to email our top guys who are not members of this site and therefore may not have received the round robin - that would be very awkward to work out though.
2 of the teams above us seem to be new and otw, so its not so much us not doing as much but new teams coming in who are well supported (200+ members).

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
Hi Stan
I understand your reluctance to antagonise team members by hassling them. Some of the top ten on the Free Spirits meter board rarely, if ever, post on the forum and some of these are not registered for this month's challenge. Having said this, it's only a bit of fun and if you've already included them in a general mailing, I'd be inclined to leave it at that.

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
Hi Paul - the round robin was sent to all people registered for this website. So if there are people whose affiliation is free spirits, but haven't registered on this website, then they will not have received it. My problem is I don't know how to find out who these would be. Thomas is there is a quick and easy way to compare people registered here and those on the meterboard, as opposed to comparing the 2 lists 1 person at a time?

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
No, I have wondered the same. I don't have their email addresses you see. C2 (quite rightly) hide them. The best I could do is spot people who have clicked 'this is me' or entered their c2 id in to the forum profile and then looked at the Meterboard. I have considered adding a badge for that "Meterboard Tragic" (or something) which would be for forum members who check the Meterboard.

Re: January Virtual Team Challenge
Without coming over all philosophical, this debate goes to the heart of the founding principles of the club and is perhaps part of the debate about whether the club needs to develop further or whether it is acceptable/preferable/sustainable to encourage more participation. As you know I've been thinking about whether we could introduce further tables or challenges which may stimulate more interest.
The founding principle remains crucially important to us I believe and makes us more welcoming and open than clubs with minimum requirements of various types.
Remaining true to that principle means that members can join challenges or not as they choose.
For those of us who are more active posters on the forum and more involved in the general activity around the club, when members choose not to participate in a challenge, it's perhaps a bit frustrating. Personally I find the challenges of interest at certain points in the year (when I'm fit usually) and feel that others could get something out of it if they join. By not joining, are they missing out?
However, everybody is different and what motivates me may be the opposite for another. We just have to accept that some people want to be active, others passive.
I very much suspect that even if the resource was found for the sort of involuntary "league tables" I have proposed - involuntary in that they would be driven from the C2 website and data uploaded with perhaps an option for members to be excluded - then activity on the forum etc would increase only very slightly. For the sort of gain that gives, is the effort worth it?
Enough for now I think.
