Re: Free Spirits CTC Participation and Leaderboard
Petr Oliva - legend. He was there at my first BIRC at the NIA in Birmingham. He travelled by coach from the Czech Republic and avoided eating almost anything for about 24 hours as he was so worried about making weight. He raced an incredible time (6:40 something I think) and came about 4th but never appeared back at FS home base in the crowd after having looked very "ill"after his race. Our wonderment turned to concern when over the tannoy came the request "Does anyone in the audience speak Czechoslovakian?" ....

I seem to remember something similar happening to Mikkel Ellesøe Hansen at BIRC in 2008
Whatever happened to Attila Karpati, Boris Bossi, Judit Nagy ?

I also remember that day, it was very worrying for a while. Total commitment that!
I remember the beers afterwards too

April update
No debuts, no jubilees (multiples of 25).
Updated ranking list for 2017: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... 1935085100
I'm forced to quit rowing indefinitely, but will keep the leaderboard updated at least until the end of the year.

Re: Free Spirits CTC Participation and Leaderboard
Thanks Alan and Erik!
By the way, I noticed that last month's participation was the lowest in years (since August 2013). I'm not sure why that was.
As for the April's Fools: Dougie has deleted the challenge from the CTC database now. I feel that, even if it was only a bit of fun, it still was something the online rowing community did together, so it should stay up there. Unless people strongly object, I'm leaving it on the 2017 leaderboard as well as in the all-time database that I use to count our participation numbers over the years.

Re: Free Spirits CTC Participation and Leaderboard
Thanks Rodger
I hope you get your shoulder sorted and are able to start erging again at some stage in the future. In the meantime, thanks for keeping this table updated.
I agree that the April Fool's challenge should be included - even though it means that I'm even further down the table than I would be if it wasn't included.

Re: Free Spirits CTC Participation and Leaderboard
Yes, agree that the April´s Fool Fish Game should be included (in "our" Leaderboad), as for honouring those who did it, and at the same time that the points given should be very minimalistic, because of the surprise effect and a certain level of confusion, so not everyone had the chance to get a score... So once again, very nice solution, Rodger, IMO

Re: Free Spirits CTC Participation and Leaderboard
May update
All-time debuts: none.
Jubilees: Paul Victory (125) =D> and Amanda Behrendt (25). =D>
Returns of prodigal sons and daughters: Paul Gould (back since Dec. '13), Emma Pettitt (Aug. '14), Gregor Andrews (Sep. '14).
Updated ranking list for 2017: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... 1935085100
There were more than 100 boats this month, which messes up the scoring system. Instead of changing the system half way through the year to accommodate this (as I did in 2015 when this also happened) I leave the scoring unchanged now. Except, now there is a minimum of 100 points. This means that rowers in FS boat VI (boat 107) get the same number of points as the three rowers in an non-floating boat: 100. I hope no one will violently oppose this.

Re: Free Spirits CTC Participation and Leaderboard
Thanks Roger. Can I suggest a relatively simple adjustment?
In months where there are more than 100 boats floated, increase the points for each floating boat by the excess over 100. Using this approach would add 16 points to each of the floated boats last month and those in FSVI would therefore get 110 points, and so on.
Having said this, I've no particular axe to grind, so it's entirely up to you how you want to handle it.

Re: Free Spirits CTC Participation and Leaderboard
I considered that option. What I don't like about it, is that it makes the scores across months no longer comparable. Some months' CTCs will then have higher worth than other months' CTCs. That was the reason I chose the current scoring system for this list in the first place, instead of counting down from the total number of boats.Paul Victory wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2017 10:30 pm Thanks Roger. Rodger, I think I've only done 39 unless you count the fish game which was just a little joke and has now been removed from the site. Anyway, thanks for keeping the records, very interesting as usual

Re: Free Spirits CTC Participation and Leaderboard
Yes, I have counted the fish game. It was a one day challenge like we sometimes have.
Alright it was a joke, but participating is still contributing to the community. So i don't see why it shouldn't count (in terms of participation). And it's part of the CTC history now. For those reasons I would have kept it on the CTC site as well.
