No sorry guys, Steve the slug was a nickname for Steve Lazenby - Paul Sims used to tease him a lot back in the early days

I tried to rectify the allocation of the challenges for FS that were retroactively transferred to other teams that I know of: Paul Gould, Andrew Richards, Mike Channin, Alan Strang, Rachel Harris. And to give Paul his fair dues, here is the adjusted list of the Free Spirits 'club of 50'.

If you know of any name changes on the CTC website (either your own or teammates') that would be less obvious to me - or team swaps from or to FS without changing names, you can pass it on to me and I can correct these in the database.

Very honourable to take part in the "Club 50" - a lot of FS legends here I´m sure a lot of people would agree...

If Paul G saw this he would feel very keen to make his number bigger...

In the previous table Bill was deprived of 7 challenges he did as "Bill Wright" instead of "billwright" (easy to miss, I'm sure you all agree), so here again is a new list for the FS CTC Club 50:

I intend to update the table every time a teammate enters the Club 50 or someone on the list reaches 100.

Does my pathetic effort today get me to 109?
Also querying 2012. Including the Carol Mac memorial row it should be 13 entries

Actually forget the last comment. In 2012 the Carol Mac memorial row lasted the whole month so only 12 challenges, not 13

October’s CTC is closed. Sadly, we saw the lowest turnout of Free Spirits this year, in number -29 - and relative: 7% of all participants were FS. This number is 13% on average in 2013 and 2014.
So there is even more reason to say ‘well done’ to the ones who did the challenge!

As expected at this stage towards the end of the year, there is not much movement on the board. The updated leaderboard can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... MTWc#gid=4

As for the all-time participation board (Club 50) introduced last week, honourable mentions this month go to:
- (Jason) Hewitt who rowed his 40th CTC for Free Spirits.
- Thornmaster (Andy Affleck) who rowed his 25th.

I guess I need some advice. I want to be a supportive team mate, but I am not all that focused on erg based training for nearly 8 months a year. I haven't been putting in CTC scores because they would be pretty bad relative to where I get during the erg season.

If folks value participation, I'd be happy to plug in a 95% effort. I just don't want to change my training objectives to really put my best effort into the CTC.

What do you all think? I don't want to be looked at as a deadbeat member.

Thanks Rodger for that interesting chart! I have to say I'm surprised or, to put it bluntly, a bit disappointed that the 2014 numbers are worse or not significantly better than the 2012 numbers. I had really hoped that your effort in creating the ctc participation list would boost FS paticipation in the ctc. It may have in the beginning (2013) but I think it lost momentum, for whatever reason. Nevertheless, please keep up the good work =D>

Greg, I think every FS entering a ctc score is most welcome! And in your case a 95% effort will still result in a top score, so go ahead :fswink: As we are usually short of ladies in the ctc you could show your true dedication and undergo a spontaneous gender change, how about that? :D

Great suggestion Peter (good post too).

The graphs are pretty shocking to be honest. Given we have 400+ Team mates to have only 30~40 putting times shows either we aren't communicating the need very well or our team isn't very well bonded. It has been regularly said that the time/distance isn't that important as it's the participation that counts. I'm quite happy for people to take part using a cool down let alone a 95% effort if it gets a FS name score up there.

We've got to reverse that trend somehow!

P.S. Nice work on preparing them Roger - it kind of brings it home where we are.

Peter, the comparison between 2012 and this year is not completely fair: in 2012 there was no one-day challenge in February. If you take that one out in 2014, the averages are in fact 38.9 in 2012 and 39.3 this year, basically the same then. I think the numbers are fairly stable for a couple of years now. The small rise in 2013 has a lot to do with the Gaye McOnie row in October last year.

But what happened in 2009 and 2010?

Greg, it will always be every member's own choice, we are Free Spirits after all. Personally, I always want to try my best in the CTC, but then I don't race or have other goals apart from general fitness and improvement.

How does this number and the participants in the CTC's correlate with active posting members on the forum? I tend to see the same core of names posting through the threads, so is it simply that people join, affiliate, and then just row without coming to the forum and learning about these things?

I was a member for a couple of months before starting the CTC and around 10 months before the Nonathlon. Why? Probably because I wasn't confident I'd do it right, especially as a newbie.

Plus. There's certainly something amiss, especially when you look at the meterboard:

400+ members, but only 342 on the meterboard makes me think there's 60+ people who haven't set their affiliation in the C2 log. The question is, why? Do they not know they 'need' to? Or do they not want to?

Anyway, just throwing out my thoughts.

I'd like to double this question… As a (non native speaker) newbie here it's sometimes quite difficult to understand all of your abbreviations and to figure out what kind of "racings and meterboards" exists and which one fits to me. #-o

Hmmm, maybe a "Free Spirits for Dummies" idea might be worthwhile. If you look through the history of my posts, a lot of them are asking for clarification on terminologies / etiquette / events etc.

My 400+ number was plucked from the top of my head. If I'd spent 2 seconds looking at the metreboard I would have used the more accurate 342 number.

That said we've had probably a couple of hundred who have at some time been affiliated to FS but no longer are. That is of course their free choice but lack of "team" participation has certainly been a factor in some leaving/going elsewhere.

I like the idea of a "How to..." Section on the forum. We could post a set of threads for team activities.
- How to participate in the cross team challenge
- how to participate in the nonathlon
- how to participate in the meterboard
- how to choose a training plan
- how to race your first "real" indoor race

I'd be happy to start writing if people think this is worthwhile.

Are there other "how to" topics? I know that there are Facebook challenges and concept2 challenges and the IRL and challenge series, but I have done that stuff, so I don't know much about it.

I think anything that helps participation is to be welcomed - but - the nub of the issue is finding out if people out there are not taking part because the they simply don't know about the various challenges/how to join etc - or are basically just happy to be a name on the metreboard and have no interest in anything else outside that.
If the latter is the case then no amount of additional info is going to make a difference.

Then we have secondary quandary that if there are a sizeable majority who only want to be a name on the metreboard (and by default never look in on the forum etc) - how can we even ask the question of them because they'll never see it!
