CTC: Well done in November 12 boats floated! 5k next
Team Rowbo have apparently selected the mile (1609m) for the CTC for next month (Otober).
Of course this means that anyone racing at Newark gets a free go under race conditions (which usually results in a good time), so feel free to enter Newark.
We've had another great month on the CTC and scored loads of points, so more of the same!! Onward, fellow spirits!

Concept 2 Official Challenges
The Concept 2 Challenge for October is the 1000m
And as you can see, it's gonna be 2k next month, just in time for BIRC.1,000m in some ways is the most physically demanding of all the monthly challenges. It is a long sprint and higher blood lactate levels are recorded when doing 1,000m than 2,000m. Training over this distance has several benefits. It increases fuel stores in the muscle and increases the enzymes responsible for burning this fuel. It also develops tolerance to high levels of lactate production. It also should take just under half the time of a 2,000m row, which incidentally is your next month's challenge!

Am happy.
Just did CTC. Aimed to beat Rita (as I never got to her 4km score last month!) did by 0.3sec/500m
Tanks utterly empty at end.
Best racing work out in a long time. Brain wanted to fold at 600m out, didn't let it. Yey!
Just sorry it didn't change our placings at all
Promise I'll try to make lightweight......

I've just got back from the gym where I managed to knock off 4 secs from my first attempt and like you it didn't make any difference to the FS 1 position. However remember what the monkey said as he p$$d over the cliff into the sea 'every little helps'

I'm going to a conference and they are always good for adding at least 5 lb because all you do is sit and eat for 4 days. After that I'm taking some vacation time and I have a feeling I'll be erg-less for 2 weeks. Even when I return, I probably will have eaten too much pasta and drank too much wine to do any better.

Race-testing for the Newark race today.
First attempt at the mile - blew up 350m out. Not good. Stopped then got going. Stopped again, then struggled in. 5:37.5 - not good. Position 54 on CTC and BEHIND Thomas.
Second attempt (as I'm racing this distance TWICE on Saturday) - better paced although a lot slower this time. Legs feeling rather heavy after yesterday's exploits - to be expected! Managed a reasonable finish and got 5:22.8. Up to position 28 on the CTC and a bit more respectable.

Team!
Please please please register your mile times - we currently only have 4 boats floated, and only 6 in total. I'm sure we can do better than this. If you've done ANY distance more than 1609m this month, just register the time for the first 1609m (and if you don't have an EXACT figure, have a guess and round up slightly.)
We NEED your miles!

Recruiting into a new boat
Mike -
I'll try and get another rower motivated - my wife. I'll do extra chores, so she has all the time to erg... and then, may be she wants to try the mile. I will try one more time before the end of the month.
Do you understand the boats - I am faster then some of our co-spirits, but I am in the "slower" boat? I thought they fill up by speed. I asked Daren in the UK C2 forum, but have not yet heard back.

Boris,
I think you will find that the rowers with slower times than you but in a faster boat are probably Lightweights (LWT). As I understand it for each boat there has to be 1 LWT and 1 Female rower, the other 3 tend to be HWT's.
This means that you may see people with a slower time in a faster boat especially as there appears to be a 'shortage' of LWT's.
Hope this helps

Dave is exactly right.
Boris, another rower for the Spirits would be very gratefully received, especially on the CTC. Go for it!
For anyone who needs to know more about the CTC and how it works, see here: http://www.freespiritsrowing.com/forum/ ... .php?t=204

All right then. I'll row in drag, indefinetely increasing the drag factor at the same time, and hope to count as a 124 kg woman....
Work in progress: Two new members in the pipeline, including our Au-pair, who yesterday did her first row ever. And, my wife. Both no LW though, at 5'9"...

Not sure if thats been revealed yet. I believe the Shawbury Rowers are deciding. I have been keeping an eye on the main uk forum in the hope of finding out.
By the way - welcome to the forum Boris (2?)
Made another attempt at the mile today and set a new pb of 5:55.8 but made no difference to my boat position.
