Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
You have some points Zoot, but it is not impossible to lose weight. I have seen 300 kg men lose 150 kg in a year with the right directions, of course. But most important is that we as adults, don't pass on our way of "living" to our children, as some do, I'm sorry to say, but shows them some healthy fun ways.

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
Not much I disagree with that anybody has written. One thing that is true is that we are all different. Different life stresses, different physiologies, different sporting histories, social pressures etc etc. And what works for one isn't always the cure for another. What does help, at least for me, is knowing you're not alone in making the change to your life style. Reading Wendy's posts makes me think beyond my original "lose some weight", and makes me wonder about old racing weight again - but the thought of losing a kilo a week for a year is a frightening amount of commitment. But people do it - and that helps me keep strong. Not sure how it will pan out, but definitely enjoying the path more than a couple of months ago.

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
I am extremely lucky in that because I lost my pancreas I am diabetic. Now that sounds really odd but it's true. It's forced me into a wholly new way of life and eating. I don't know how I consumed the vast quantities of food I used to; I cannot think how it fitted in! I don't eat biscuits or cake, pies or pastry and don't miss them one bit. I have developed a passion for vegetables (not much fruit - a bit too sugary for me). I discovered I don't want slabs of meat, or enormous quantities of cheese .. I'd so much rather have a small amount of really excellent, beautifully tasting food than a mountain of dross designed to fill me up.
I suppose I could inject to cover all the crap I used to enjoy but I'd rather not. Much better to munch some celery & marmite than a bun or biscuit.
And as you rightly say, the exercise combined with the changed way of eating is what will keep me here for life. I find I have developed a steely determination never to buy a single item in a size larger than I currently wear . I think I'll keep it off - it's been five years so far and all I am is more focussed than ever.

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
Celery and marmite! Together!! That is seriously wierd.
(My ex wife used to eat banana and brown sauce sandwiches when pregnant but celery and marmite?)
I think we are agreed that different strokes for different folks but the end game is a change of how we think about food and all that goes with it.
Dreading the next few months as entertaining is a feature of the job and I am partial to most wine (and the occasional cocktail, beer, lager, scotch, G&T, etc) and that has to be controlled. I think the right word is controlled rather than banned or eliminated.

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
I agree totally. I've been avoiding this thread out of embarrassment, but I'm going to post my weight this weekend and use it as a new starting point (it's too depressing to enter my weight at the beginning of the year). Hopefully, it will be the start of the long road back.strider77 wrote:Great posts Zoot and Wendy-thanks, puts it all in the right perspective

Thanks Alan
I'll do my best to justify your confidence in me. [-o<
OK, here goes. This is really really bad. I've gone over my old weight loss threads and I'm now at my highest weight since October 2010. On the plus side, I hope to make a significant dent over the next couple of weeks to give myself some momentum.

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
I've never measured myself with a tape or anything. I go by clothes size . At the moment I'm a comfy UK size 14 (US 12, I believe). My biggest was size 24. Smallest in my adult memory is 12. I'd like to stay in the 14's but have them looser. They're not tight at all but I like baggy clothes.
I get weighed tomorrow morning. I was 78.5kg last Sunday. I don't know if I lost anything this week; I've eaten plenty but it's been pretty healthy stuff so I'm hopeful

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
Ah. The formula comes from Mr. Covert Bailey, who was a fitness/nutrition advocate for many, many, years in the United States (recently retired). For 20 years (30 years?) he performed body fat testing (underwater and calipers) but also took body measurements. Eventually he derived two formulas: one for men, one for women.Paul Victory wrote:How do you get the % Body Fat measurement?
The formulas comes with a caveat - they are not as accurate as either underwater testing or using calipers. (Whenever I have had my body fat tested at a health club, the actual number is about 2% above what I get from using the formula. Different people will get different results.) The advantage however, is that you can check your progress at any time with just a tape measure.
Remember, the purpose is to track your progress, so be sure to take the measurements the same way each time! And don't take measurements daily... you'll drive yourself crazy trying to figure out if you waist dropped 1/16". Give it some time! Once a month works for me.
Male Formula (in inches)
% Body Fat = waist + (hips / 2) - (2.7 x forearm) - wrist
wrist - taken at the thinnest part on the dominant side
forearm - taken at the thickest part on the dominant side
hips - taken at the widest part
waist - taken at the widest part
The waist is very tricky. If I fully extend my stomach and then suck it all the way in, I can change the measurement by 5". So it is very hard to get an accurate number. You want to be relaxed, in a neutral position, and not extending or contracting your stomach. For consistency, I tend to use my fully extended waist minus 1/2".
Mr. Bailey tells the story of a woman who quit in disgust after working with him for a few months... she lost a dress size, but gained 5 pounds! She just couldn't get beyond the idea that weight, by itself, isn't important. It's the whole package.

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
Exactly 78Kg. No gain, no loss. I guess that's OK - I've done nothing except the rowing as exercise; the rest of the time I've been stuck at a desk. Also I didn't drink enough. Water, I meant water!! I usually slurp loads of it and it is really good for helping with weight loss (why??) but this week I've been so busy at work I just forgot to keep drinking.
I'll try harder next week!

Thanks for that Zoot - very useful. I vcertainly hope I put a bit of muscle back on as well as lose a load of fat. Clothes are looser already, although fell off the wagon over the weekend. Boss decided to stop work early on Friday, so we went to a bar - bye bye willpower!

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
First week of my new regime.
I'm still undergoing physio for my shoulder and I'm not doing much erging, so I'm going to have to find some alternative exercise to supplement the limited amount of erging I'm able to do. Anyway, I did manage to change my eating habits last week, although I wouldn't say I'm in full blown diet mode quite yet. Upshot was a moderate step in the right direction, but I need to build up more momentum.

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
3.7 lbs? I wouldn't call that moderate, Paul, I'd call it a very strong step! Well done on the diet. Add in a little cardio and you're off to a good start!Paul Victory wrote:Upshot was a moderate step in the right direction, but I need to build up more momentum.
0.8 lbs lost this week, for me. Possibly. It's a little hard to tell as my weight has been up and down all week, with a low of 222.5 and a high of 227.5 the next morning! It's been hot and I'm sure most of that is just water sloshing around.
Anyway, I'm happy with the 0.8 as I've been working out of town and my diet choices always take a hit.

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
Had a good week, then a week on holiday which reversed all the good and now starting again.
Target is 73kg by end February 2013.
weight yesterday was 88.6kg.
I agree with Mr Mutant. It's not the weight but where it is, how you feel and whetehr it's permanent.

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
My weight has done some very odd things over the last few days.
Yesterday pre-workout 82.5kg (in kit); post-workout 81.5kg (in kit, probably including significant sweat )
Today pre-workout 85kg (??); post-workout 82.5kg (again, wearing the sweat too).
Probably shows my hydration levels are all over the place! Good luck to those of you committing to weight targets. Mine is not to be much heavier than I am today, but to have got back to PB performance levels...

My advice: Have you tried eating less than you normally do Try to avoid potatoes, pasta and rice Eat only meat and vegetables, fruits and oatmeal
Try to avoid white bread Avoid sweets, cake, ice, beer etc. for a while and only eat and drink what you want one day a week in moderation. This will work for you as it worked for me. I lost 7.5 kg. in 4-5 weeks due to the fact that I had a lot of hidden fat around the body. I wish you luck with you weight loss.

And saying that, you must realize that it is a little hard in the beginning. Your stomach needs to readjust itself to the new conditions. You'll have to tell you nearest about your food-plan so that they don't tempts you to fall in the pit of bad habits.strider77 wrote:Thanks Mikkel-very good advice
On the plus side: You'll save money on unnecessary food, candy and beer.Every friday or Saturday you can freely eat some ice and drink a beer or 3. I assure you that you'll enjoy that more than you normally would do.
I'll looking forward to follow you progress if you choose to follow these simple rules. [-o<

Re: 2012 Weight Loss Thread
I have a friend who is of large frame and admits to being overweight now.
A while ago he showed me some pictures of him a few years ago looking totally ripped, six pack, the works.
To achieve this he essentially spent around 18 months eating only protein, not drinking alcohol, massive hours in the gym, etc. etc.
He was pleased that he had done it but, quote
"it made me the most boring person on the planet, ruined my social life, came close to wrecking my marriage, left me with injuries I'll carry forever and all for vanity"
So, whilst I agree that making some changes to lose some weight is good, as with all other things in life, a bit of balance and moderation is always the answer and if yuo want to have a beer or enjoy that burger on the way to the match, (come on you Reds), or have a bar of chocolate, then you should.
