Free Spirit Mojo rows.

Post by hewitt »

On the 1 September next wednesday will be the start of the Free Spirit 5k to get the mojo back. There are a few of us that have lost our mojo lately and keep handeling down. :?
Its simple all you have to do is do a 5k and put your name and time on this thread for the whole of September.
There is absolutely no pressure to do one as we are Free Spirits.  (But i will probably do about 5 attempts)

Count me in Jason - that's a great idea  Perhaps I could get rid of that pesky 0.7 sec that's been taunting me ever since my last 5k attempt

On the BIRC thread, Erik had suggested the idea of a monthly FS challenge, and I've copied across some "out of the box" thoughts on some of the challenges that could develop...
Mat wrote:The FS participation in the CTC shows just how many of the team enjoy a challenge  I'd also suggest some challenges that may be more inclusive, and give almost anyone a chance of winning...

As most of the team have PBs/SBs in at least the regular distances/times, my suggestion would be to throw in the following type of challenges;

a) Time taken to row 1/2 of your 30' PB (so a rower with a 7k PB would have to row 3.5k, whilst one with 8k would be rowing 4k)!

b) How far can you row in 1/2 of your 2k PB time

These type of challenges would handicap those of us with faster / higher distance PBs, whilst still providing an excellent challenge, and it should lead to a much closer challenge

What do you think guys?

Thanks, Jason :!: Great initiative :!: :D

Mat,

also great initiative of you to try and make a broader appeal :!: Your thoughts are very interesting :!:  As I mentioned on the BIRC thread the general wish amongst FS seems to be towards longer distances... I would also imagine that a number of FS would like a "ranked distance", so another idea could be to do this related to PB or SB at the start of the challenge... Anyways, hope to see more suggestions and enthusiasm about your idea :!:

Funny you should mention that, I've started a 20min / 5k challenge. One day do as far as i can in 20 mins then the next do 5k as quick as I can. Very very disappointed with times / distance at the moment. Can't believe how out of shape I am. Well actually I can I only have to look in the mirror!!!

Got to start some where I guess. I look back at my time when I first got my rower and they were pretty bad. Only way is up or hopefully down (times!)

Anyway started it and enjoying my rowing again. My daughter Shona has started rowing as well, we shall see how long she lasts but she has done 2 out of 2 days so far and is also enjoying it.

Sounds good to me hopefully I will finally be attempting the coast to coast this weekend then there is the Great north run 3 weeks later ( Just walking it I expect as my calfs will not let me run more than a mile or so ..If it was not my 30th gnr frankly I would give up ) so my rowing season starts on sunday I have loads of stamina at the moment but no speed so a few 5k's are just the thing :)

Maybe this could be my chance to do a 5k and actually establish a PB time for it

Some good ideas there Mat so that everyone gets a chance to finish on top of the board. 8)
If we stick with the 5k for September then we could have a VOTE on the next months challenge.Set up a poll and have 3 options for people.

Good to see so many people taking an interest so far. 8)

Hey Jason,...Wasn't it you who did 5K in pace 1:40.8, I think you did  =D> =D> I have trouble imagiing you having trouble doing a fast 5K :? But: Maybe you suffer from the same thing I suffered from after I had done all my PB's in august-oktober 2008. :-k

I'd be up for a 5k on RP 1st Sept but it would have to be before 12:00 GMT (13:00 BST) as I'm working in the afternoon.

Jason has put a 5k up for 13:00 GMT on the 1st.
That's too late (or early) for me so I've set up an alternative at 10:00.

Hope to see some of you there :-)

Good idea Jason =D> . Count me in. Like Scoop, 5k is not a distance I have ever really set a PB at  so two or three attempts over the month should do me good. :?

Back to work on Monday so day time RowPros will be out. But hopefully there will be some evening sessions too.

So I'll be setting up a Non RowPro at 6:00 p.m. on September 1st

Has anyone given any thought about the best way to record it ?

Like the Nonathlon, on a Spreadsheet or any other ideas ?

1st September, and there I was like a bull at the gate, eager to get the 5k underway [-o<

I've not done a 5k in earnest since my PB almost 3 months ago, so I'd planned to come in somewhere around 17.10 today, with a PB attempt later in the month. I therefore planned for 1:43 pace on the PM (knowing it would give me an actual pace of 1:42.x), with the hope that there was something left for the last 1k. As it was, I was pretty surprised how close I managed to get to my PB.

1k Splits went like this: 1:42.7, 1:42.8, 1:42.7, 1:42.6, 1:39.8, with the final score...

5k - 17:01.2, 1:42.1, 30 - just 0.5s outside PB #-o I guess I'm just going to have to hurt more next time

I've entered the time on the chart: FS 5k Entries
