So what next
So now I've had a chance to think about it and say well done to see all those who did a marathon (or 2...or more!).
It's really awe inspiring to see the true spirit in Free Spirits alive and kicking.
So now, the twisted evil monster in me returns....
I have a trophy sitting on my shelf now - which belongs to Free Spirits - for the best Charity event of the year. Someone else needs to win it from me next year....
So what do we think for the next Charity event?
I had a sort of "let's keep a rower going for 24 hours" sort of thing?
...don't all shout at once.....

Given our worldwide team, I wonder if we could clock up an official C2 record for the most distance done by a team in 24 hours or something.
I was involved in the BA Hurricanes Tsunami Charity Row in March 2005 where the assembled rowers did something like 1600 miles over the course of a morning and afternoon using about 16 machines going continuously. Could we, as the Spirits, top that???
Another similarly evil idea would be to try for the most consecutive marathons rowed on one machine. (Would have to be at least 20 something, as there are people out there who have done 1 million meters in a single continous attempt)
Any other thoughts anyone?

Stan/Paul - don't know how you're feeling, but I'm now just starting to come back onto form after Saturday, so my system is almost recovered from the marathon. Suspect it may take you guys a few days longer as you worked a bit harder than me, plus you're less used to them, but don't worry, you'll feel full of beans again by the end of the week.
Paul - remind me about your HR values again. My average for the whole of the 50k was 148 with a couple of spikes up to 173 when sprint finishing the 42195 and the 50000 distances. (Even hit 1:36 on the last stroke!). From what I remember, your HR values were very high relative to mine, which makes your achievement even more impressive. Stan, did you take any HR readings?

And now the track list for the last hour or so of the marathon/50k.
Fall at Your Feet
My Favourite Game
Zombie
60 Miles an Hour
Hung Up
Promised you a Miracle
Holding out for a Hero
I Want to Break Free
It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I feel fine)
I'm Still Standing
Alive and Kicking
(Simply) The Best
Sit Down
Let Me Entertain You
We Are the Champions
Prayer for the Dying
(I just) Died in your arms tonight
Everybody Hurts
(Chariots of Fire)
Well, kept me smiling at the end anyway...

Mike - my heart rate average for the marathon was 144 and maxed at 174 with that crazy sprint finish I did (hit 1:35/500 at one stage ). This was well into UT1 for me.
Having the HR monitor was clearly important - I very quickly realised that rowing at 2.10 was too much on this particular day so I slowed to 2.12 which kept me in the right zone. I am not sure why I so quickly went into UT1 - normally this pace would have taken about an hour to do that - maybe after affects from last weeks cold or just the nerves on the day.

My HR went high quickly on the day too - probably the extra stress of the situation meaning it was harder to relax. I know Paul said he had trouble settling too. I also found it difficult to keep to plan and to hold the stroke rate down once you two got going. But we got through it and that's the main thing.
Incidentally, I have your max HR down as 171, so 174 is really going for it!!!

HRs
Mike...my heart rates were higher than they should have been.
I'm usually around 142, 143 at the start, but no matter what I did, it never dropped below 155. After 2 hiours it was 172...I had nothing left for a sprint as it was about 178 at the end anyway.
....must have been the excitement!

the 24 hour rowing relay
Wow....I had the same idea....I was thinking about it last week whilest I was rowing my marathons.....how neat if we could have a team rowing in time slots for 24 hours or more.....see how many days we could keep it going.....
We have a race in Oregon called the "Hood to Coast". Each team has 12 runners...with a runner from the team always on course....each runner has two legs of the race and it takes about 24 hours to complete.....its always that second leg that most struggle with....as it is the one that falls late a night...or just before dawn...
With our world wide team....we could easily keep it going.....soooo I'm in.....
