Charity Marathon Row - 28th October - Photos now in

Post by PSims »

Stan & I (and hopefully Jacques Malaprade) are planning to do a marathon row simultaneously (i.e. we each do the 42,195m at the same time) at the end of October.

My Mum died of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) a while back - so I want to do this for the MND charity. To sponsor us, please visit:

http://www.justgiving.com/pasims

The details are:

 Venue: Rivermead Leisure Centre, Caversham, Reading
 Date: 28 October (and the 29th if I'm really slow!!)
 Time: Probably about 10:00 am start, finish around 1:30 pm
 Number of lunatics: 3

Please let us know by replying to this if you would like to:

 Join us (even if you are far away - it could be virtual?)
 Sponsor us (we accept any currency!)
 Come along and cheer us on
 or anything else you think might help!

Paul et al, I shall be far away on the date selected but with you in spirit.

Put me down for some sponsorship though. I'll PM you on this.

My marathon effort is timed for the 18th October at present. Perhaps I'll look into a charity event as well.

Hmmm, bit of a problem with the timing for those of us racing at BIRC two weeks after. A marathon is not the greatest training piece for a 2k race!

That said, I'd be happy to come along and row a slow marathon alongside you all, if you don't mind me finishing after everyone else.

Let me know if this is any use to you.

I agree with Mike on the timing, that (deciding to complete in BIRC) was the main reason (In addition to good HM's and 60mins) I've decided to go for the Marathon as quickly as possible . People say it takes 2+ weeks to recover from a fast marathon

My original aim was to do this marathon on the first anniversary of my first marathon (and get a much better time) - then Paul invited me to join him and I thought the idea of shared pain was a good one. I am not intending to compete at BIRC so its not going to spoil any preparation. However I am pretty sure that its not a good idea for those who do want to compete at BIRC and I would fully understand why they would not want to do this. I think this subject was debated not long after this site was started up back in July and something like 12 (maybe even more?) people expressed an interest in doing this - hence Free Spirits marathon month was born. Some who originally wanted to do it may have changed their minds to do BIRC instead - thats absolutely fine - we are Free Spirits.

Paul - I think mnd is a very worthy cause which I am delighted to help out with.

Thanks all.

I wrote to the MND Association and their reply is attached at the end of this message, for info. Really helpful guys. I followed their advice and have set up my own personal donations page, so anyone that wants to can donate in privacy over the web. The address is:

http://www.justgiving.com/pasims

(Also appreciate all those going to BIRC - no problem. Good luck to you all - shame I can't be there on that day).

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your email and wishing to support our cause in your charity marathon row.

Please can you forward to me your address and I will be happy to send out to you a fundraising pack that contains fundraising ideas, registration form for you to complete and return and a material request form for you to order items, free of charge that may help with your event, this includes official sponsor forms, t-shirts, running vests, leaflets, posters etc, we can provide all this for you so that you will not have to put our logo on your own posters or t-shirts....

Given people like me, Mike etc are training for BIRC - how about we do a relay marathon alongside - and get others involved? What do "others" think?

Like I said, I'm happy to clock off a marathon, but it'll be at a relatively slow pace - probably around 3 hours dead, as I can't afford a maximal attempt that close to BIRC.

I like Thomas's plan of people rowing relay marathons. Now a HM at pace is probably not going to disrupt training too much, so we could get a few people doing it as pairs, half each as a continuous piece. Should make the finish quite exciting!

Any other Free Spirits want to get involved??

Post by PSims »

Mike - Love to have you with us.
3 Hours for us is NOT slow  I'm just hoping to finish!!
So you can take it as easy as you want!
Or start 10 - 15 mins after us?!

Will need to sweet talk the Management in our gym to move equipment around. We have 7 Model Ds (5 of which work properly without cracked screens etc) - but they need shifting about with other machines to get 4 in a row. If you are definitely going to come, we'll do it!

P.S. Jacques is a definite now as well!

Count me in. And I'm sure the gym will be more than happy to oblige for all the nice publicity they'll get. Can bring the digital SLR so you get some proper photos too.

Will need room to put in my fans though. (The electrical type, with revolving blades - don't have any of the other sort!).

Could bring my PM2+ along too - does anyone know if this will retro fit onto a model D?

Looking forward to it.

They have a huge fan over the rowers - also why don't you want a PM3?

I was offering the PM2+ if we ended up using all the machines, including the ones with the duff monitors. I suspect you'll end up with a good few of us there...

May still bring my big fans along if that's ok. I tend to run VERY hot when rowing.

Aha

Post by PSims »

Gotcha!

We only have 7 machines.
Ironically they have more boxed up fopr when we get the new gym kitted out.

I'm trying to persuade them to rob the PM3s from the unopened boxes to replace the 2 dodgy ones. They both work - just one has some screen lines missing so it's difficult to read and the other has some dots all over it where it looks like someone's poked it with a screwdriver. Bloody gym rats! Can't look after anything.

how bizzare

Post by deerworrier »

not posted for while due to moving house and general hate of narrowband internet, back on line now and first thing i read is some other nutter is rowing a marathon for charity:) i am rowing mine on the 30th of october at 12pm and really want to be done by 3pm. best of luck to you mate and dont forget to get the local press involved, i train at fitness first in inverness and the staff there are posting my sponsership forms and have told the local press so there is no backing out:( i saw a post about t-shirts so if i can get one before the end of the month i will give the team a bit of publicity in the highland press.

thats it, good to be back online and i have just posted my log for the last 8weeks so totals will rise substantually on the next update.

p.s how the hell do i get my times back on my signature, had them on the last forum but forgot how to do it:(

Hi deerworrier

The signature is discussed in the FAQ. And the T-shirts are oh-so nearly available - look at the kit topic. I think that you might be disabled from having a signature until you have 10 posts to stop spam, but I may be wrong. I should know as I administer the forum!

I think that if I set a deadline for kit orders of 1st October, you should have your T-shirt in time for your marathon. Good luck :D I am still aiming to be in Reading.

Thanks to all those that have sponsored me so far.
I've already got over £600 - which is fantastic.

There's still time for anoyone else thinking about a donation.

Getting there

Post by PSims »

Thanks Mike.

Not many FSers are behind us at the moment.
Go on - it doesn't hurt - no matter what you give, anything is appreciated. :)

Mike, it's a definite 3 of us for the Marathon now...you, me and Stan. Jacques can't make it due to family commitments.
But he's still training alongside me and helping my confidence a lot.

Another 30k Monday - building up now.

Paul - I am still hoping to come down with the family and cheer you on - but have realised that it involves that terrible NW stretch of the M25 and a Saturday.

BUT, I have remembered to donate - and nicely brought the total up to an exact "Blind Devil" - does that count for ELM?

I may surprise you and turn up - good luck anyway.

Come on everyone. Every pound matters :D

Hey Thomas...that would be great!

Thanks for the sponsorship as well.
And Gooner and Alistair!

Another 200 quid and I can buy a Model D (only joking).

I have never raised this much for charity before.
Amazing what the internet can achieve.

Really getting excited and looking forward to it now.

Up at 5 on Monday for another 30km bash.
Try out some power bars from C2 - see if they help the energy levels.

Paul,
I just made a donation to your donation website. I will try to raise more through work but its a bit embarrassing as we have all just forked out to a colleague who did the Bristol half marathon.
Looking forward to joining you in the suffering
