Hi Peter

Welcome to Free Spirits. The first thing you need to know about the Concept 2 monitor is that it bases the calorie calculation on a weight of 175 pounds and the damper setting (which changes the drag factor) does not affect the number of calories burned during a workout. There is a formula for calculating actual carories burned based on your actual body weigh, which is available here http://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/t ... calculator If we input a time of 1 hour for someone weighing 15 stone (ie 210 pounds) and 1044 calories shown on the monitor, we get a figure for actual calories burned of 1104.

The number of watts generated is proportional to the cube of the speed at which you are rowing. I don't know what the relationship is between speed and the number of calories burned per hour, but looking at my own workouts it seems to be reasonably proportional to the square of the speed at which I'm rowing. My most recent 5k workout, was at 1:55.0 pace and I was shown as burning 1089 calories per hour; the figures for my 6k were 1:58.1 pace and 1029 calories per hour. Interpolating between these two figures gives an estimated pace of 1:57.3 per 500 meters and an estimated distance of approximately 15350 meters for the hour.

Greetings Free Spirits!

I'm Mark and I post on the C2 Forum using the same Psychopasta handle.

I've just gotten into rowing aged 59 as part of getting my fitness back. I'm on week 4 of the BPP, and my split tends to be ~2:23. Onwards and Upwards!

Hi everybody,
I'm Swinny, new into rowing, started about 3 months ago, I enjoy the long rows and am attempting my first Marathon later today. I found you guys while searching for tips.
Looks like you have a great community here.

Hello there Swinny and welcome to Free Spirits. :)

I do hope that you were able to complete the marathon yesterday. As a newcomer to indoor rowing, that would have been quite an achievement, no matter what the weather conditions.

I also hope, that today, you are not suffering from a severe case of ' numb bum ' ... Plucky you. :)

Hi Jill and Camicrew,
Yes I survived thanks, I had to put it off a week as other commitments got in the way, but I did it last night. It was'nt on the water, I only row on concept 2, pace was 2:22. Blistered hands, sore bum and pulled something in back of right knee with 6k to go but carried on. No stops 3:19:44. Now I will work towards getting that to 3hours dead. My profile on Logbook is SwinnyIOW. Cheers
