I have been nervously eyeing Mr Gould hurtling up the metre board behind me - managed to match you today Paul but I suspect you are going to overtake me before too long. Are you going to join myself and Paul Sims for the full marathon on the 28th October?

Andrew - not only did you match me on today's distance but you got a PB as well!
I may well catch you on the metre board but looking at the PB's I suspect my rowing is done at a much gentler pace than yours!

WRT the marathon on the 28th - I would love to join you and Paul - if you could let me know what time you are planning to start - I am currently one hour ahead of the UK but I think your clocks go back sometime near the end of October.

I have been planning to do one of Mike's loony ELM Extreme challengesaround that time(either the 4x50k or that Sahara challenge) and might incorporate the marathon into that.

Best of luck with the training.

Hi Paul, great to hear you will be with us in spirit (pun intended).
The aim is to start around 10 am on Saturday 28th (11am your time).
Feel free to have a beer afterwards as well!
The clocks will probably go back that night so I wouldnt worry about that.
I am hoping to break 3 hours 10 (my 30k times suggest I will succeed but that last 10k can be a real painful exercise) but will be happy to set a new pb.
Talking of Mikes loopy challenges I was thinking of renaming it Free Spirits Insane

Thanks Stan - the beer after part sounds good! - I'll look forward to it.
You will do under 3:10 easily as long as you don't go too hard in the first 25 km - it seems like you are aiming for a similar time to me.
The scary thing about Mike is that he not only devises these challenges, invariably he is the first one out there actually doing them, and at pace too.

on holiday in the outer hebrides showing off little one to grandparents.

and taking two hours out every day (much to the chagrin of my longsuffering wife) to try to climb the metre board.

she doesn't seem to share my concern about slipping back below 80th spot.

15k yesterday 5k - 20.18.8; 5k - 20.39.4; 5k- 20.43.8

and 15k today - 20.43.4 and 10k - 42.50.6.

20k tomorrow i think.

Mr Pope, I consider your actions to be a gross dereliction of your family responsibilities and I demand that you spend not so much time on the rower!

Remember that the rower is a passing phase and the family is forever. 8)

Yours very (in)sincerely

I've also just noticed that the positions from 69 to about 95 on the table are all within a couple of weeks worth of metres for most of us. Could be interesting!

In the winter will we see a surge from those who go to gym (warm and cosy) against those of us who have a cold garage? :?

Know what you mean about the cold garage. I was thinking of buying a heater and getting the kids up early to go down and switch it on for me before I row.
Run it past them the other night and they didn't seem that keen :?
I tell ya kids these days don't know how easy they're got it!!

Hey! No fair!

Creeping up on Louise and think that maybe tomorrow I might sneak a place and suddenly 55k's!!!! :( :P

Nice rowing Louise. I will catch you one day.

I'm on a surge as I'm on holiday from next Friday and will be doing nothing except sitting on my lardy ar$e and drinking beer.

Now I've got pressure from Mr Pope (who should spend more time with his family) and Mrs Webber (who says I should spend more time with my family).

Mr Pope, you scared my there. I though you were on for a 20k session yesterday.

I'm waiting for the metre board to update (how sad is that) so that we can swap places again.

I am on holiday from next Friday and will have very limited time next week. I'm going to enjoy my very brief time at number 79/80 because I suspect that it will be Christmas before I get there again.

Mr Pope will get me into a lot of trouble!

Friday is not a rowing day for me usually nor weekends. Looks like I might have to though if I want to stay ahead until my hols.

I'm sure I hear your baby crying for you Iain.

starting to get a few pursed lips now from wife, mother and father.

what is so very wrong about working my family holiday around my morning trip to the local gym and my slow assault on the metre board?

(if you ever wondered how best to spend taxpayers cash can i suggest you have a look at the isle of lewis sports centre. very fantoosh. as well as some lovely x-trainers, bikes, resistance machines a row of 4 ergs. all in beautiful sparkly new condition. 10 times better than the shite i pay £45 a month for in my local hilton gym in edinburgh)

baby Pope's baptism tomorrow and i've been taking two hours out every morning to haul myself up the board.
hey ho.

can i legitimately get away with a 15k tomorrow? Especially after tonight, a night with Glenlivet 12-year-old written all over it.

today - 15k - 5k - 20.32.0; 5k - 21.53.0; 5k 21.48.2

thomas w-p. you WILL be mine by Halloween. Or shall vwe say Guy Fawkes?

Weberg. You have me at an advantage. Reveal yourself sir.

anyone know any divorce lawyers?

Damn your eyes man - uncovered.

Quite into the language as I'm reading Jane Eyre at the moment and trying to stay ahead of the TV.

That Rochester - cad or victim?

Aunt Reed - title of Jet song.

Miss Ingram - gold digger

Mrs Rochester - nutter.

Not quite as subtle or as well written as Jane Austen (love all of her stuff) but it fills a long train journey.

A gentle warm up then 5K at 2:12 - no more no less.

Back fine some muscle pain inside top of thigh and a bit at end of drive but no raection afterwards.
I may be a medic but I have no understanding of sports injuries.

A bit longer tomorrow same pace I think.

No rowing for virtually 2 weesk - weight loss 2 lbs

Some top stuff going on with Mr Gould and Mr Webber streaking away from me. Hope to back full on soon

Winterrowing

Post by BorisZ »

This might be a little off, may be its me being half Finn (or all my blubber providing supreme insulation :? ?) ....but winter rowing outside is not so bad at all. It's a little like wintercycling.

- Warm up the handle with a couple freezer bags of hot water
- Multi layered clothes, essentially the same as on the bicycle, that gradually peel off as I heat up. Admittedly, it takes a while sometimes...
- I don't use gloves, but have some sort of rag (old T-shirt parts) hanging over my hands so they don't get cold...but can still sweat.

C2 should include a diode with the erg that lights the display, so rowing in the dark is easier.

broken through into the 70s today (at least will have done whenever the board updates even if it is only until the next person inputs their meteres.

good 16k today - 1k warm up and then 15k in 62.18.6. (2.04.6) lovely and smooth with a quick last k. Longest row i've done in months.

bit of a jump to the next few chaps up the board but then there is a gaggle of 3 ripe for the picking.

on backshifts for the rest of the week, which leaves me no excuse not to get in the saddle.

On your tail chaps.

Mike - I am still 100 or so km behind and your little group (9th to 16th) seem to regularly put in 100k + weeks so will not be easy to catch.
Where I have an advantage is that I don't have any races as a distraction - having said that if I was still in the UK I would avoid the races anyway( they are all sprints which I don't like one bit).
Another thing I have noticed is that I no longer spend 2-3 hours daily commuting to and from work which gives me loads more leisure( and rowing) time and brings the stresslevels down a lot.

Happy Rowing and good luck to all those going to Newark.

Well in my current wounded state I'm easy pickings - sounds like I'm only accelerating the inevitable! Hope 65th on the board isn't a lifetime best !

Cheers for the good wishes Paul.

We may be clocking 100k a week, but you're on 170k this week (great effort), so I think our lead is going to get eaten up fast. This is like watching that Ogre catching up all over again, and look where he is now.

Stan - great effort on the 30k the other day. Well done. Looking good for the FM! I still haven't done my 30k yet (and won't be able to until after Newark)

Say Paul - are you going to join us on the FM from S.A. (think you've already said yes, but can't remember)

Alistair, some weeks you accelerate and some you coast.

You,ve been injured and it always takes some time to recover.

Just stick at it and you'll find the metres flowing again soon.

Iain, you're teasing me. You let me get to within 500m and then put in 16K!

When do you go back on days?

Look out for Louise though. She does the metres but posts about once a week or so whcih shoots her up the table.

Good to have targets though.
