September CTC - we are choosing it

Post by Stan »

It is our turn to choose the cross team challenge for September, so I thought it might be a good idea to debate it and then hold a vote.
My own thoughts are that it should be a distance/time which hasnt been done on CTC before and it should not be a long or restricted stroke one (they dont seem to be as popular).
Thomas has suggested an imperial mile and that might be a useful tester for those thinking of BIRC in November. I would prefer something a bit longer 2.5k or 3k.
What does everyone else think?

Personally, the longer the better for me. I've been doing 15 K rows of late and it is a nice row  .

I'm new to the CTCs (and rowing) and I saw that one of the previous challenges had a stroke rate limit of 20 spm. My "slow and steady" pace is about 24-25 spm. I have tried a few times to row slower than that, but I just feel out of synch. How does one go that slow? I'm 5 ft 3 in, so there isn't much distance for me to "slide" either.

To save anyone else looking them up, the previous CTCs have been

Aug 06 - 500m
Jul 06 - 30 mins
Jun 06 - 1k
May 06 - 5k
Apr 06 - 10k
Mar 06 - Rugby Test
Feb 06 - 300m
Jan 06 - 30mins Rating Capped at 20
Dec 05 - 6k

The UK indoor racing season starts in October with a mile race at Newark, before the BIRC, WIRC, IIRC, etc 2k races.

Maybe a 2.5k would be good - bit of a sod of a distance, but good preparation for the race season.

Perverse as it sounds fancy 2500m. If I can work well for that 2k should seem like a breeze.

I agree it should probably be an unrestricted distance/time not previously done on CTC this season.

Of the Qualifying Ranking Categories on the concept 2 website the following distances/times haven't been chosen for the CTC yet this season:
2000 Meters
21097 Meters (half marathon)
42,195 Meters (marathon)
60 minutes

I think the half and full marathons are too long as not many rowers will bother, so that leaves the 2km and 60mins.

I'd like to see either the 2km, the 60mins or maybe the imperial mile although I can't decide at the mo.

2.5k is the old race distance its a lung buster and half, or 4000m both are good prep for BIRC

Welcome back Gregor. Much as I like 1 hour rows I think it is too far and most people would not do it.

If we are going to do a "non-standard" distance in the 2,500m sort of range how about this - the percentage of our journey to the moon x 100 on 31st August?

It will be about 2500m but a bit more fun.

Dunno - want to do all sorts of things!

I think they should have to do one of our more unusual challenges!

 Centipede
 Legless 2,000m
 Blind 1,000m
 Or we could really start a war with Lotto!!

He he he!

Selfishly, I would prefer something a bit longer, but for filling more boats, shorter is better.

Jacques 1 minute blast might be interesting?

Its been mentioned already, the Newark race is the imperial mile, and there was a good turn out for this event last year, me included. I think it could be a good test for the people taking part at Newark, and something different for those not.
Im not apposed to 2500 either though, its a distance Ive nver tried, I would be up for any of the two

I vote for something spectacular like Left Handed Only, or 10 minutes on damper setting 1.

Other than that, bring on the 2500!! (No handed, I'll use my teeth!)

Hitting the big 4-0 in September I would go for something ground breaking like 4k as it has a 4 and a 0 in it. Not saying that I would be any good at it but beats 5k for me :-D

Hate the short ones with a vengeance.

How about 32k ( 2 p ZX81 16k Ram Packs - :) ). 4K does sound good though ( I am 40 next year )

Longer the better. ( Personally ) Seem to do better at those and they are very good for you ( providing you have a good drainage system for the sweat ). I know there are loads out there who want a short one and 2.5k - 5k is about as short as I will go. Still have not done this months CTC yet ( scared of it ). Certainly will not enter a time unless I can reach my PB ( or very, very close ). Will put in a 500 on the 29th August ( as I will not be rowing for a week - How will I cope ? ).

Hey, maybe it should be 80 - your age, times 100m.

This would be a good one to reward the older rowers...

4k

Post by PSims »

4k would ensure a lot of people participated and it's not so close to the standard 2k - so a bit of a challenge to pace correctly.

Of course, us Free Spirits are used to it with the likes of Kochuk's challenge etc...or haven't you guys done that one yet.
Well it's about time you did - cos it ends next week!!!!
