Nothing impressive by any means, but my post-strength-workout 5K resulted in a more respectable (for me) SB of 20:33.2. The fact that it came after my workout allows me some room to hope that I'm improving... :)

Absolutely Ron, I can see a sub 20 5k in your near future!

While it is very early in the season and SB's don't mean an awful lot, I am pleased to have improved my 30 min by nearly 400m from 5 days ago.
I have started increasing the DF towards the levels where I am most comfortable and my abysmal efforts at low DF have made it glaringly obvious that my technique is dreadful and my explosive leg drive is non-existent!!
Am generally starting to get stronger again - my ribcage is almost completely healed and I am experiencing no discomfort from the ICD implant, so all good.

Great to hear of your progress. Probably good to practice at lower DF until you can produce a more explosive drive! Maybe stop short of the 200+ DF used before!

Just took 5.4 secs off of my 2k SB. This is effectively my 'return to rowing' and post op (umbilical hernia) PB.
Quite chuffed.

ok, the new erg has arrived, its been set up. Drag factor set to around 125 (5 on the lever).
10 minutes to start with as I havent done much exercise recently and boy did it show. I hit precisely 2000m.
Has anybody realised that coronavirus originated on the c2, I now have a cough. Boy I remember ergers cough now.
Let see how the improvements continue.

I'd like to resurrect this thread because I set a new SB for the 10k last night :D Current SB was a 39:54.8 / 1:59.7 from October 17th. I felt it was time to have a closer look at this distance again. Plan was to start out around 1:59 pace for the first 2k and than get gradually quicker. This is how it went:

The first 2k felt comfortable so I decided to go quicker in the following split. This one also felt ok, so I stuck to negative splitting all the way down to 500m to go. All in from here and counting strokes in the final 200m, really knackered afterwards but happy with an improvement by 48.8 seconds (and 17 Nonathlon points as well) :D This is also 40 seconds quicker than last season's best.

Great row and a well deserved improvement!

I normally think I feel good after the first interval of most rows, but that usually turns out not to be true

Grobi šŸ˜Ž so close to sub 39 too I can see another attempt is due šŸ‘šŸ˜‚

I managed to produce a 3:16.6 1K today too. Still getting use to this power/endurance stuff.

Thanks Jon and Kevin :fswink:

Yesterday I got the impression that my 6k SB (23:39.7 / 1:58.3) was kind of weak  I had managed to row the 6344m for the IRL at 1:57.7 pace, so I ought to be able to go faster than that on a 6k  But how fast exactly? There was of course only one way to find out... Before I set off I had set myself three goals:

bronze: beat old SB, 1:58.3 (should be easy)
silver: beat IRL pace of 1:55.7 (tough but doable)
gold: go sub 23 minutes / 1:55.0 (not looking forward to that)

Plan was to start the first 1k around my IRL pace and then see how I feel. This is how it went:

The first 1k felt ok and I went a bit quicker in the following km. With about 3k done things started to become somewhat uncomfortable... I had to find a balance between not losing time and not handling down. I tried to stay sub 1:55 pace and the PM told me that my predicted finish was getting closer and closer to the 23 minutes mark. So my golden goal was within reach. To make it mentally easier I split the final kilometer in pieces of 250m. That didn't hold long because with 750m to go I thought "hang on, that was tough, why not split it into 100m pieces?" With 300m to go I finally saw a 22:59 as the predicted finish which of course was a motivational boost (which I really needed at that point). With 200m to go it was the usual pattern: pull like a dog and count your strokes! Seems it worked :D

So I'm very happy with an improvement by 43.4 seconds and going sub 23 again :fswink:

Well done Peter, an excellent row and write up. Really impressed how you managed to hold your pace from 3-5km.

Nice going Pete.

Took just over 27 seconds off my 2k this morning. Set a 07:24.5 back on August 17th when I set the rower up in the shed. Today squeezed out a 06:57.2.

Still a way off my PB but that was over 13 years ago. Not sure I'll ever get that....

Great 2k there Pete, going sub7 must have been a great feeling (after the recovery of course :D ).

Dave, can you read my mind? I had the intention of testing my 30 minutes next and tried to do so two days ago. Unfortunately I had to quit half way through.

So I told myself: if I can't row 30 minutes, why not try 60 minutes? So one day later I had a closer inspection of my hour of power SB (14828m / 2:01.3). Plan was to hold a 2:02 pace for the first 2km and then see if I can wind it up a little. This is how it went:

Unbenannt.JPG
Unbenannt.JPG (22.69 KiB) Viewed 2783 times
Maybe it was the h/d experience from the day before that let me start at a pace slightly slower than initially planned. At the half way mark I felt confident enough to sharpen things up a bit. With 10 minutes to go I was down to an overall pace of 2:01.4, still not good enough for a new SB. So it had to happen in the final 10 minutes. With 8 minutes to go I was finally at 2:01.3 pace, meaning a new SB was in the bag if I could only hold a pace of 2:01 or faster for the next eight minutes which I split mentally in peaces of 2 minutes each, just to trick my mind  I couldn't trick my body though, so with four minutes to go I swapped to increments of 1 minute only. In the final two minutes it was all in: "brain shut up, pull like a dog, count the strokes"! It was very tough towards the end as you can tell from the final heart rate (also a new SB I think  ) but of course I'm very happy with an improvement by 94m. This is only 8m less than last season's best. But I'm a year older now (and 5 kilos lighter).

Can't believe you won't get 15k very soon šŸ‘ This is one of my neglected pieces that I hope to have a good go at in the new year.
