I had a bone to pick with my hour of power. Current SB is 15038m/1:59.7 and I had already bailed out with 25 min to go in an attempt last week. So last night I had another go. Having learned from last week I decided to not overdo it in the first half (sticking to 2:00 pace or slightly quicker) and then carefully wind it up from there. This is how it went:

First 30 minutes went well so I decided to go a tad quicker in the following 10 minutes and see if I get past that mental barrier with 25 minutes to go (when I failed last time). Once that was over I felt much better and knew I would finish the session. With the last 10 minutes coming up I watched the projected finish slowly but steadily rising towards the 151xx mark. Well, that would be great to go past 15100m wouldn't it? So it was all in in the final 5 minutes and then a bit more than all in :D in the final two minutes. Completely knackered afterwards but happy with a new SB by 93m (which is also a seven years best) :D

I haven't really done a proper 2k TT this season and I'm still far short of regaining full fitness. But I decided that my rather soft 2k time of 7:30.2 should be beatable, particularly as it was done as the first leg of an attempt at this month's CTC.

My average pace for the CTC was 1:49.7, so this seemed like a realistic target. In practice, this was harder than I thought it would be. I managed to keep at or near 1:50 pace for the first 1200 meters or so, but the wheels fell off between 1250m and 1750m. However, I managed to regroup over the last 250m and a final sprint got me home in 7:19.6 @ 1:49.9 pace. Happy enough with this (for now!), but hope to get a lot closer to 7 minutes next season! [-o<

Splits were as follows:

Distance Time Rating
500 1:49.6 33
1000 1:49.6 36
1500 1:50.9 37
2000 1:49.5 38

2000 7:19.6 36

Nice one Paul - pretty consistent pacing all things considered.

Thanks plummy. My usual pacing is more of a bathtub, so I guess it means I probably didn't do a fast enough first 500m and might have knocked another couple of seconds off overall if I'd been prepared to dig deeper into the hurt locker. But yesterday's session was more about setting a benchmark for next season.

I decided to have a go at the two shortest sprints a couple of days ago and narrowly failed to beat both. So I had another go today and managed to get my 100m time down to 17.3 seconds (from 17.5) and my minute up to 333 meters (from 326).

I wouldn't normally post this early on this thread but my 6k last night (somewhat randomly chosen as a marker as I struggled so much with it last year) turned out to be a 3 year SB, taking 13 seconds off my best for last year and 3s off the year before that. I was only 0.9s away from beating my best from the year before THAT (not that I knew until I checked after the row). Hurt like hell and I backed off for the second to last 1k by a couple of seconds per 500.
23:20.3 - very happy with that time (apologies to those who saw it on FB yesterday)

I decided to do a HM today. My 'gold' target was 2:05 pace, which would bring me home in just under 1 hour 28 minutes, but my backup target was to beat last season's SB of 1:29:45.3, which would earn me 904 nonathlon points. It all went pretty well until around the half way point, but started to go pear shaped after that. My heart rate went up over 160 and I found myself really struggling to hold onto any kind of pace. My splits kept getting slower and slower and I was actually pulling around 2:13 at the start of the final km. I managed to haul something back over the last few hundred meters, but missed my overall target by around 50 seconds, finishing in 1:28:41.5 @ 2:06.12 pace.

My splits were as follows:

Distance Time Pace Rating Heart Rate
2000 8:18.0 2:04.50 28 127
4000 8:16.7 2:04.17 30 137
6000 8:18.0 2:04.50 30 143
8000 8:19.7 2:04.93 30 153
10000 8:17.4 2:04.35 31 158
12000 8:21.9 2:05.48 30 162
14000 8:26.5 2:06.62 30 163
16000 8:29.1 2:07.27 29 165
18000 8:35.4 2:08.85 29 167
20000 8:38.6 2:09.65 28 168
21097 4:40.1 2:07.67 30 175

21097 1:28:41.5 2:06.12 29 156

Well the temperature has dropped and so has my 6k SB as a direct result

Previous time of 25:48.0 was giving me my worst Nonathlon score and so was a target in the cooler conditions. I set myself a pace target of 2:05 with a pace boat at 2:06 to make sure I had something to keep me going. I managed to finish with an average of 2:03.8 with a time of 24:45.6 and an extra 35 Nonathlon points.

Much more my cup of tea than these sprinty CTCs which will be the focus next week no doubt.

Not in Jon's league for improvement, but finally ducked under 40 minutes for 10km.

Great work Ian. 40 minutes is a great barrier to break through. I only did that once, and it still stands as a distant-memory PB. =D> =D> =D>

Thanks Jon.

On a bit of a roll this weekend. Christened the new erg location with an hour. Had a feeling I could improve a little, so set the pace boat to 2.03 and (with the aid of a sprint at the end) slithered under that mark.

Great work Ian. Sub 40 happens about once a season for me and I only got close with a 40:12 some time ago this season - and haven't even got close to worrying it again since! I'm not sure it will this season for me...

Thanks all - the interactive plan is really helpful with general technique I'm finding, in addition to the general boost from hearing of everyone else's successes.

Well done on your recent SBs Ian, your training regime really is paying off, keep up the good work!

I can announce a small SB for the 2k :D With my latest September ctc attempt being as quick as my 2k SB (1:49.1 pace) I thought it was time for a 2k TT.
Plan was to start out around old SB's pace for the first half and then wind it up. This is how it went:

image-2018-10-02.jpg
image-2018-10-02.jpg (12.76 KiB) Viewed 1982 times
The first and second 500m segments were tougher than expected but I was in SB territory at the 1k mark, so that helped mentally for the second half. The third quarter is always the hardest (for me) but I was able to keep the negative splits. Once I was under 500m to go it was time for a finish sprint but there wasn't too much left. Nevertheless happy with a new SB, although it's 2.9 seconds slower than last season's SB. But the season isn't finished yet...

Sounds like a good start of the indoor season to me! Congratulations Peter on a good effort. I expect more to come given that your last season’s PB is quicker ;-)
