Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
With the CTC and IRL both being sprinty stuff, and my 500m and 1k SB being rather soft, I decided to have a goat both and garner some Nonathlon points
1. 13:00 - 1000m
Old : 3:28.0 @ 34 spm
New : 3:18.2 @ 35 spm
2. 17:30 - 500m
Old : 1:35.2 @ 39 spm
New : 1:31.4 @ 40.6 spm
Did both rows at DF 202.

Very impressive Paul. Good to see you doing them that way round as the opposite would have been mentally tough as well as physically.

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Thanks Peter.
Thanks Dave - the 1k to my mind is much tougher than a 500m so wanted to get that out the way first.
On the 500m I had a negative split on each successive 100m interval which may indicate that I might be able to knock a bit more off that one - I would be very pleased with a sub 1:30 !!
Today I set a new SB for the 10k rowing strapless at 300 DF.
I have now done the 30 min and 10k at DF 300 strapless at sub-2.00/500m.
I had the same problem with sweat and the failing grip, even though I wore gloves.
This happened with about 3.5k to go and once again I hung on, finishing barely out of breath, with fresh legs but very sore arms !!
Tale of the tape :
10k
Old - 41:14.8 @ 22.6 spm on DF300 strapless
New - 39:47.7 @ 25.2 spm on DF300 strapless.

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Yes, very impressive improvements, Paul
After good training in August, a little setback in September, it seems like I´m back on the right track. Moving forward to the "real" erging season I wanted to do some tests today:
500m: 1:32.8 (was 1:36.7)
1000m: 3:21.8 (by default)
30min: 7828m (was 7166m)
Of course also hoping for an improvement in auto-EF (was 43% in April)...

I'm sure your EF measures will be positive - it took about 12-18 months for me to go from 35% to 55%(lower boundary of the "normal" range) - the medication does help, and I see you are losing weight too, which is very beneficial to improved heart function.

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Thanks a lot Paul, for your kind words and bright example Surely that can give me some hope for the future It´s wonderful that you have achieved 55%, and it seems almost mystical for me to foresee such a change, and like your example my Doctor told me it could easily take 12 months to see any significant improvement I hope for getting past 50% if I shall feel any kind of competitive erging wise, but I don´t think I´m quite there yet... Yes, my weight loss has made me feel a lot better - and I guess it will also mean lighter work for the heart - feeling good about my current weight I will see if I can push a little bit again training wisepaulgould wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2017 6:16 pm

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Decided to have a go at my middle-distance SB's - 5k and 6k.
Wanted to see how close I could get to Mr Weiss' SB's - these are my middle distance gold standard.
Set the PM yesterday for 6k with 1k splits to record a 5k time - then I overdid it a bit in the middle section and called it a day at 5k
Time : 18:49.7
SPM : 28.2
DF : 225
I had another go at the 6k today planning to start out a bit more conservatively and not bother with the 5k split too much, just aim for 1:55's for a sub-23 minute.
It went better than expected and I went through 5k in 18:53 and did 1:48.5 pace for the last km.
Time : 22:30.3
SPM : 29.6
DF : 225

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
I made two attempts at the IRL mile yesterday (one in the morning, one in the evening) and failed on both of them with 320m to go and 280m to go. After the latter one I decided to have a go at my 500m to put my recent sprinting activities somewhere (and to hopefully finally have a sense of achievement). Old SB was 1:39.4 and I would have been happy with anything faster than that. Plan was to start slightly slower than SB pace for the first half and then see how much I could bring the pace down. This is how it went:
100 / 1:40.0 / 39 / 143
200 / 1:40.0 / 33 / 165
300 / 1:38.5 / 37 / 165
400 / 1:36.0 / 41 / 169
500 / 1:36.5 / 40 / 172
Total: 1:38.2 / 38
After the two annoying fails at the mile I was finally very happy with a new SB by 1.2 seconds Things went pretty much according to plan except that the last 100m were more painful than expected. It was simply a question of what is faster, the increase of lactic acid in my legs or the countdown of the remaining meters. Guess it was more or less even

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
I am delighted to have got my season up and running by completing the Skeleton Crew challenge over the past 5 days. My season metres before Oct 27 were zero, so I must have got some season’s bests!!! Real life has got in the way of rowing in recent months, but not any more. Great to feel the rush again...

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Scraped a 1.5s improvement on my 1k today after waking up feeling a bit like I was getting a cold. As my warm up went mostly OK, I thought it was worth a shot so went for it knowing I could back out if it all went wrong - it "mostly" didn't but had to back out big time at one point...
200m splits as follows:
42.1 - 1:45.2
42.1 - 1:45.2
42.1 - 1:45.2
44.2 - 1:50.5
42.1 - 1:45.2
Losing those 2.1s was the difference between quitting and finishing so glad I did to some extent - plus I'm sure there's a couple of seconds more in the tank when I feel 100%
7 Nonathlon points as well and my second score over 900 points
Another 1.4s off and it gets me a 2 year SB!

Very strong 1k Dave, well done! You might want to do it again on a good day when you‘re feeling 100% fit, find those 2.1 seconds you lost today and have a nice confidence booster for WIRC

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Had a go at my 5k today. Old SB was 18:55 (1:53.5). As my 6k pace (1:52.6) is faster than that it was high time to spend the 5k some attention. I was pretty sure that I wouldn‘t be able to row that fast but maybe a little improvement was possible. So plan was to start out at old SB‘s pace for the first half (maybe longer) and then see what‘s possible. This is how it went:
1000 / 1:53.5 / 28 / 163
2000 / 1:53.2 / 28 / 170
3000 / 1:53.0 / 28 / 176
4000 / 1:53.8 / 28 / 179
5000 / 1:50.5 / 29 / 182
Total: 18:48.5 / 1:52.8
That was a tough one! First 2k were ok, the third one was hard but doable, but in the fourth k I was strongly considering to handle down. Instead I slowed down for about 200m and picked it up again. When finally the last 1000m started it made it easier mentally, but it still wasn‘t funny. With 500 to go it was time to see what‘s left. Overall pace was down to 1:53.2, so faster than SB pace, but maybe I can squeeze the pace below 1:53? A couple of hard(ish) strokes with 400 to go and the projected finish showed 18:50 for the first time. Next 100m, another 100, 200m left now. Counting strokes from that point onwards and finally brought the pace down to 1:52.8. That‘s still a bit slower than my 6k pace, but maybe I had a very good day then or wasn‘t fully fit today or both.
When I ranked my new SB I noticed than I‘m less than a second ahead of Fred and Paul. It won‘t be long for sure before they reinstall the old order

When I ranked my new SB I noticed than I‘m less than a second ahead of Fred and Paul. It won‘t be long for sure before they reinstall the old order
Athletes row, others just play games

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
There's no let up in your progress Peter. It's a real run of good form you are on

43Mm metres rowed. Re-setting the bar much lower now. Getting too old and brittle for this malarky

Fantastic SB streak you are on, Peter Keep ´em coming
My heart seems to be pumping the best it has done in a long time, well a year at least, maybe two... Time to celebrate with a 10k SB two days ago: 39:08.8 (was 41:44.0) and an SB on the 5k today: 18:24.0 (was 19:06.8 ). No dizzyness and no "troubled" breathing

Old enough to know better - young enough to do it anyway
