Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
That's a very impressive time David, well done! We do have a designated PB thread by the way: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11&start=11775. Enjoy posting there while the PBs are coming in
I had a third go at the ctc last night. Looking at my 30 min SB (1:56.5) I noticed that my latest 6k (1:56.3) was only 0.2 seconds quicker in pace than the 30 mins. I reckoned that a 6k can be rowed at a pace 1 - 1.5 seconds faster than 30 mins so I was hoping for a 6k pace between 1:55.0 and 1:55.5. Plan was to start out at 1:56 for the first 2k and then speed things up. This is how it went:
1000 / 1:55.9 / 28
2000 / 1:55.6 / 28
3000 / 1:55.4 / 27
4000 / 1:55.0 / 27
5000 / 1:55.2 / 28
6000 / 1:52.1 / 29
Total: 22:58.6 / 1:54.8
That was hard work but extremely happy with finally going sub 23 again Things went basically according to plan until 2k to go when things got ugly. Overall pace was at 1:55.5 at that point and I was quite happy with it. But I couldn't imagine going faster as I struggled holding a 1:55 pace. With 500m to go I decided to try speeding up a little and see how it feels. It felt awful of course but I noticed that the projected finish was going down to 23:0x. Hmm, going sub 23 would be really nice, wouldn't it? With 200m to go I sped up further and with 100m to I saw a "22:59" for the first time. Ten more big ones and finally a finishing time of 22:58.6, my fastest 6k for more than five years
Now that my 5k pace is only 0.1 seconds faster than the 6k I gues I'll have to do a 5k soon

Mighty fine effort Peter - you are in a cracking run of form. Although appear to be digging yourself more holes - everytime you improve on one time/distance you end up having to re-visit another one you've shown up as vulnerable.

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Exactly! I started a vicious circle that keeps me going at new SBs for 5k, 6k, 30 mins. As a consequence I had a go at the 5k again last night as my 5k pace was only 0.1 seconds slower than my 6k pace. Of course I couldn't leave it like that With the 6k pace being 1:54.8 I reckoned that a 1:54.0 for the 5k should be doable. Maybe even quicker, but not one day after my 6k TT. Anyway, I felt fresh enough and had a go:
1000 / 1:54.8 / 28 / 163
2000 / 1:54.4 / 28 / 169
3000 / 1:54.0 / 28 / 175
4000 / 1:53.4 / 28 / 179
5000 / 1:51.0 / 29 / 185
Total: 18:55.5 / 1:53.5
Very happy with a new SB by 11.8 seconds and more importantly going sub 19 again! The last time I went faster than that was almost five years ago The row itself was pretty tough as you can tell from the heart rate. With 1k to go I was at a 1:54.1 pace and the predicted finish time was around 19:00 - 19:03. I'd have been happy with that as it would still have given me a new SB. On the other hand, if you are so close to a goal which you have been working for for so long (sub 19) and you have invested so much effort in the last 4k, why not try going a bit faster? That's what I did, having less than 1000m to go helped mentally and watching the overall split go down to 1:53.9 with 500m to go provided the next mental boost and I could finally bring the split down to 1:53.5.
Problem now of course is that my 30 mins pace is a whole 3 seconds slower than my 5k pace. I think this is going to need some correction

I think I've just set a new 2 year SB for 5k today at the Devon Indoor Rowing Championships. Took 8.5s off down to 19:10.0 (1:55.0 pace).
Last year I think my best was 19:12.5 ish and the year before was 19:07.5 (at the same race event)..so not too far off that.

Two full days rest helped (although a 6 hour drive the day before didn't).
Happy with the time as the HD demons were very present at around 1300m to go.

Today rowed an extra 160 meters in 1 hour. 15176 mtr now, also more then the last two seasons. Again after a days' work, can hardly imagine that that would be a good preparation but it works.

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Very strong hour there Fred, well done! Plus 15k for the hour is out of reach for me at the moment I'm afraid
Don't ask me why but I felt the need for a 2k TT tonight Target was to beat my current SB of 7:18.6 (1:49.6). Splits were:
_500 / 1:49.0 / 29 / 166
1000 / 1:49.9 / 29 / 171
1500 / 1:47.5 / 29 / 177
2000 / 1:44.6 / 32 / 177
Total: 7:10.1 / 1:47.5
A bit annoyed by those 0.1 seconds, but still happy with a new SB by 8.5 seconds

Great time, Peter, I should row the shorter distances (<=2K) as well, but I don't have the courage.

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Another season's best to report from last night I was quite happy with my old SB for the 10k (39:30.5 / 1:58.5) as it was perfectly aligned with my 5k (18:55 / 1:53.5) according to Paul's law. Nevertheless I felt the need to improve it a bit. Plan was to start out at a pace of 1:58 - 1:59 for the first half and then speed it up.
This is how it went:
_2000 / 1:58.3 / 27 / 159
_4000 / 1:58.0 / 27 / 169
_6000 / 1:57.8 / 27 / 176
_8000 / 1:57.5 / 27 / 181
10000 / 1:55.6 / 28 / 189
Total: 39:09.5 / 1:57.4
This was tough from the very beginning. Legs were quite heavy from stroke #1 as I could still feel the 2k TT from the day before. I decided to keep going and it got a bit better after 2k. The last 2k weren't prety at all as you can tell from the heart rate (probably that's a season's best too ) but with 500m to go the projected finish showed "39:10". Although tanks were almost completely empty at that time I decided to give it a try and see if I can pull it below 39:10. Completely knackered afterwards but happy with a new SB by 21 seconds It's also my fastest 10k for the last five years.
Only problem now is that I have to revisit my 5k and see if I can row that at a 1:52.4 pace

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
- super effort Peter. Your great form continues
I limped out of a 6k effort last night unable to hold 1:57 for more than 3.5km without having to back off and threw in the towel at 5k at 19:52.5 as I was struggling to get enough air.
What annoyed me more was I set up for a 5k cool down and slowly sped up and finished with 20:30 - with no problems breathing....but knackered legs this time

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Thanks Jan and Dave!
I'm sorry to bother you all with yet another SB, but they keep coming in and I'm enjoying them as long as my form continues.
Had a go at the hour last night. Old SB was 14683m / 2:02.5 which I was already quite happy with. But compared with my recent 10k SB of 39:09.5 / 1:58.5 I thought I could go a tad quicker. This is how it went:
10 / 2:02.0 / 26 / 154
20 / 2:01.7 / 26 / 162
30 / 2:01.6 / 26 / 169
40 / 2:01.4 / 26 / 171
50 / 2:01.2 / 26 / 179
60 / 1:58.5 / 27 / 188
Total: 14864m / 2:01.1
Again a hard piece of work, especially in the final 2k, but very happy with a new SB by 161m! The last time I had rowed a better hour was on June 12th 2012, so more than five years ago

Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Really great PBs Peter!!
Also good to read that you did not end the post with a statement that the result would force you to revisit another distance
Although Erik's and my effort for the C2CTC might force you to revisit your 6k

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
I didn't write it but I certainly had it in mind As a result I revisited my HM today. Old SB was 1:28:44.1 / 2:06.1 but looking at my 10k (1:57.5 pace) I figured that on a good day I could do the HM at a pace of around 2:03 (5 seconds for doubling the distance + 0.5 seconds for the remaining 1097 meters). Having done three time trials the three days before certainly wasn't a good precondition to have a good day but I tried nevertheless. Plan was to start at 2:05 pace so that an SB was safe and see how things develop. This is how it went:
_4300 / 2:05:0 / 26 / 152
_8600 / 2:04.4 / 26 / 158
12900 / 2:03.1 / 26 / 169
17200 / 2:02.2 / 26 / 177
21097 / 2:00.5 / 27 / 186
Total: 1:26:35.3 / 2:03.1
Seems my estimated target pace was spot on! 2:05 pace soon felt too easy so I sped up things earlier than initially plannned. The last ten minutes were tough but watching the projected finish time melt and finally go sub 1:27:00 helped a lot. Very happy with a new SB by 2:09 minutes and my fastest HM in the last seven years. Turning back the wheels of time feels really cool
I saw that I had planned another ctc attempt anyway, but didn't expect it would have to be such a strong one. Great scores guys but don't feel too safe too soon

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Thanks Fred! Although I have to admit that your times are much more impressive as you are faster and older than me (a fact that is well reflected by your nonathlon scores]
Well, as the month is coming to an end I decided to have another go at the ctc 6k tonight. Old SB was 22:58.6 / 1:54.8 and I was pretty happy with my sub 23 time. On the other hand I figured that I had become quicker since I set that time and should probably be able to go at a pace 1 second quicker. So my plan was to start out at 1:55 pace for the first 2k and then get faster. This is how it went:
1000 / 1:54.7 / 28 / 154
2000 / 1:54.1 / 28 / 166
3000 / 1:53.8 / 28 / 171
4000 / 1:53.2 / 28 / 177
5000 / 1:52.4 / 28 / 180
6000 / 1:50.1 / 29 / 187
Total: 22:36.8 / 1:53.0
I have to admit that this went much better than expected! Pacing plan went out of the window after 1k and I decided to be a bit more aggressive today. Of course that implies the danger of h/d demons which started creeping up with around 2k to go. Nevertheless I managed to concentrate on breathing/rhythm/technique which brought me through the fifth k. With less than 1000m to go I started pulling 1:52/1:51 and the projected finish was down to 22:40/22:41. At that point I recalled that Tako had entered a 22:37.x score for the ctc. Wouldn't it be fun to beat Tako's score (except for Tako of course?) Yes, it would! So I kept pulling a bit harder and finally beat him by 0.8 seconds. Oops, sorry Tako, but I bet you will beat me again pretty soon So overall very happy with a new SB by an unexpected margin of 21.8 seconds

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Great Peter! Happy to be of service
Before my injury and while being on the PP for first time, I did a 6k PB in 22:23.6 @ 1:51.9 on August27. So Thanks for giving an incentive and rest assured, I will give it another try before the end of the month, but it will be tough

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Had another go at the 30 mins. last night. Current SB was 7725m / 1:56.5 and with my 6k SB being done at a 1:53.0 pace I hoped for a 1:55.0 pace for the 30 mins. This is how it went:
_5 / 1:56.0 / 27
10 / 1:55.4 / 27
15 / 1:55.1 / 27
20 / 1:54.9 / 27
25 / 1:57.2 / 27
30 / 1:56.1 / 28
Total: 7771m / 1:55.8
All was well until 10 minutes to go when the urgent desire to handle down came up. I guess my body was telling me that six time trials in eight days was more than enough and that I should call it a day. I managed to get through those ten minutes by slowing down but it still wasn't nice at all. Although I had hoped for 78xxm I'm still happy with my new SB by 46m.

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Did as I was told last night and had another go at the ctc Target was simply to beat my current SB of 22:36.8 / 1:53.0. Plan was to start out at 1:54 pace for the first 2k, then 1:53 pace for the next 2k. I knew it would be hard to beat that time so I tried a conservative approach. This is how it went:
1000 / 1:53.9 / 28 / 150
2000 / 1:53.3 / 28 / 167
3000 / 1:53.0 / 28 / 172
4000 / 1:52.7 / 28 / 180
5000 / 1:52.4 / 28 / 185
6000 / 1:50.7 / 29 / 189
Total: 22:32.3 / 1:52.6
Do you know the feeling after a TT that you could have gone a bit faster? Well, not this time! I couldn't have gone a fraction of a second quicker, completely knackered after the row. Things went ok for the first 3k, the 4th k was tough and after the 5th k I was seriously considering to handle down. Heart rate already at 180 with 1k to go and still three tenth away from target pace, not a promising perspective for the next four minutes I managed to pull occasional 1:52s and brought the pace down to 1:53.1 with 400m to go. At that point it was all or nothing, just counting strokes and focussing on the pace. A really hard piece of work and only a small improvement of 4.5 seconds but nevertheless very happy with it
