Failed and succeeded
Tried leg 2 of the Roller Coaster in a hurry last night and blew.
Did however reduce 5k PB by another 3 secs to 21:10. That's 10 secs off this distance since joining. That's 1 sec per 500.
Thank you FS all.

I did my Imperial Mile/Metric Mile together also. My Imperial is faster because the last 109m was a flat out sprint.PSims wrote:3) Imperial Mile/Metric Mile (set dist=1,609, split to 1,500) kill both together
I was puzzled by a lot of the results for the 2 miles (typo 1 mile).
I expected the 1,500m split times to be quicker than the 1,609m.
They aren't. Have I missed something?
Make sure you change your splits before you start though, for the mile they default to 400m, so I upped my splits to 500, and wrote down the 3 times.
I'm guessing a lot of people are doing the 2 individually. Last month I did a omen 666m at 1:35.9 pace, but had done a CTC 1,000m beforehand at 1:31.8 pace
I generally do most individually, but some long ones I'll try and combine. I combine some short ones also because after doing the mile attempt yesterday I had no real power left.

New PB over 5000m today at lunchtime, while watching the Adam Sandler Waterboy movie
17:22.5
Knocked 8 seconds off best time. Didn't set out to row hard or fast, but after first 500m was seemingly cruising at 1:45 per, did the maths, and thought "only 4500m to go, and I'll have a new PB"...!!

I just got 39:54.9 for the 10kStan wrote:Gregor - congratulations on the big improvement in the half marathon - I told you you could beat 90 minutes. Now I expect to see your 10k come down below 40 mins as well. I strongly suspect your 1 hour should be around 14700/14800.
My PB was previously 40:45.3 so I was trying to match 2:02.3 until I got to 5k to go when I just manged to take the average split times under 2:00.
I'm pretty chuffed with that as it means I've beaten all my PBs already this season (500m, 1000m, 2000m, 5000m, 6000m, 30mins, 10000m, 60mins and 21097m) and I got 7 of them this month! )
The only one I haven't tried is the full marathon but I don't think my back could take it.

Had another pop at CTC and beat my PB from 2004.
Up 63m from 7,633m to 7,696m
Agonisingly close to 7,700 Interestingly my maximum heart rate at the end was up to 186, the highest this year. I felt pretty good throughout the piece and now feel all my PBs are vulnerable...
This result had no effect on boat standings, but a certain Gregor Andrews got bumped down to Free Spirits VI.

I just had a look at CTC before coming here to see the bad news.
I think I've got someway to go before beating that one.

A day's rest and actually eating lunch for two days in a row made a huge difference. I have been skipping lunch at school for a while as part of the weight loss programme.Gregor Andrews wrote:I just had a look at CTC before coming here to see the bad news.

I aimed (and failed) for 1:57.5 for the first 20 minutes - but I managed to pull from 1:57.8 to 156.9 in the last ten minutes. I have moved the ergo from the cellar (ashamed to see all the mildew on it that was impossible to see in the bad light down there) to my office-as-was and oiled it. The dry environment and oil made all the difference of course.

Well done - that is one of my targets, but I will be aiming for about 19:10. I remember the days when I was that fit and could pull hard for ages...Paul Victory wrote:I managed to knock just over ten seconds off my season's best 5k today. After doing a lot of longer distances, I found the faster pace difficult to sustain, but managed to hang in around the 1:51 mark and finished in 18:27.4.

second ever row of 60 minutes, and boy, my bum hurts! Only 20 minutes longer thanyour 10k rows, but feels like a million.
rowed at 1/ 50 for the first 50 minutes, and down to about 1:51 odd for the last 10 minutes.
Clocked 15733.
So, how is the best way to go about setting decent times over these distances? ZGO hard from the start and hold on as long as you can, or start slow and pick it up at the end, or pick a rate that will give you the time you aim for at the end and just stick on that - anyone!!??

It looks to me like you are already setting decent times!
While my times are way slower than yours, the principles are the same - my best performances are off the back of very even pacing. I take it slightly slower over the first 1000m or so, then settle into a pace I know I can maintain and then try to sprint towards the end. The majority of the row is at the pace that will give me the time I am aiming for.

Cheers Stan - starting to think that looks the best way - pick the splits that will get you to a PB, and if you have any sprint left nearing the end, that is bonus. Although i often start eht sprint too soon, and blow the arse end of the row and struggle to hold on. Gotto keep to that pace, even if it feels easy, whcih is hard to do, I love the rip, shit and bust!!

Anyone had any PBs recently?
Hi,
Just managed to knock almost 5 seconds off my previous 500 metre best - now 1.33.5. For 350 metres I was holding it well but the last 150m was tough, reminding me why have not tried to improve this PB for several months.
This is my first post since joining Free Spirits and delighted to be on board.

Welcome aboard Tom,
5 seconds improvement for 500m is very impressive well done. Interesting you seem ok for 350 and then lose it for the final 150 -exactly what happens to me. I think I am going to finish in 1.32 but it finishes at 1.37 - nasty stuff that lactic acid - maybe the government should ban it. Actually this government is more likely to tax it

I do a similar thing although I start of slow (probably too slow) for the first 2km or so just to get some metres under my belt. Then I'll slowly start to increase my speed trying to take the average split time down all the time, and finish with a sprint.
I need to start of a bit quicker I think, get to the speed I want to be at and keep it at that for the majority of the race, then sprint at the end. Similar to what I do but with a reduced variation of speed throughout.
