Awesome 2k Felton, well done! =D> Those last 500 must have been painful! But then again, they always are at a 2k

Re: Anyone had any PBs recently?
Having being falsely accused of being a Nonathlon slacker by Rob, I thought I'd better put in a decent 500m unlike the one from last year.
Somewhat surprisingly I pulled a PB out of nowhere, improving my 1:38.2 to 1:37.9. Nothing special in terms of other Free Spirits, but not bad for a 50 year old lightweight who hates sprints.

57 years old, 5"10', clinging on to 75kg and frustratingly but understandably inconsistent

Congrats on the 500m Jon, defending your honor is as good a motivation as any. I too am turning 50 later this year and plan to leave my FS sig at 49 as long as I can...
Felton! Geez! You are a PB machine! Way to keep 'em coming.

Re: Anyone had any PBs recently?
Two PBs for me in the past month. Quite different experiences. Both also were markers after the 6 week FM plan.
5k was at Madchester - 5300 mi from home. I'd logged five solid weeks of training on Sam's plan before boarding the plane to England. Nine days of travel later, I had rowed on the Thames once, but otherwise only walked (a lot) and ate (a lot) and no erging... so I didn't know what to expect when the 5k loomed closer. Felt nervous! It's normal to be nervous for a time trial, but when it's the first time meeting your virtual friends, you're also trying to hide the panic, and not pay too much obvious attention to the "just in case" bucket sitting near the ergs
With my April 5k at 20:23, a long way off my PB (in Jan) of 20:09, it didn't occur to me I could break the 20:00 barrier until I took a few strokes of this piece and realized -- ok wait -- this feels good. Like, really good. Like flying. If only every erg piece felt this way.
Home a couple days later, and jetlag, re-entry to reality, catch-up mode at work interrupted by 2 days of jury duty -- all took its toll. Managed to get through remaining plan sessions but with difficulty - and as May was closing out fast, I knew I had the 2k TT to do and the CTC. Pressure.
Sat down a couple days before month end and tried to trick myself into thinking I was doing a different workout, but then set the PM for 2000m. Went out at a 1:54 and it only took 500 meters to start feeling like I was dragging a ton of bricks. Splits deteriorated in the middle 1000 to 1:59s and the last 500 was good enough only to dip just under my preplan 2k at 7:50.
Gave it until May 31 and tried again. This time I went out at a pace I knew I could sustain, and set 400m splits instead of 500m.

3:55.6 5000 1:57.8 29
Madchester was of course a huge factor, with erg-buddies right there as coaches. Jan & Sheena's erg was warmed up & ready to go. My favorite part was in the middle when Peter, upon seeing me drift up to the 2:01 mark, said calmly "now give me a 2:00, please." (At the lake, people yell during TTs.) He said it so politely, it seemed rude not to comply. Pressure.

1:33.2 1600 1:56.5 29
1:32.1 2000 1:55.1 30
So there it is - (edit: 6.1) sec better than the pre-plan 2k at end of March, and 1.1 sec better than my PB in Jan2015. There could be a few more seconds to gain, if I could get the mental aspect sorted. As of now, however, it's not a workout I wish to attempt terribly often. (And yes, I followed the 2k with the CTC, not highly recommended )

Re: Anyone had any PBs recently?
Well done on both PB's Barbara. I saw how hard fought the 5k was at Madchester (in the latter stages) and given the travel you had been doing I was hugely impressed.
The 2k and mental demons it carries around are a different beast altogether so require many of these for your new PB
I'm with you on the quiet word in the ear approach, you know, just a nudge and a bit of reassurance rather than the yelling type of support (hence me shouting at Stuart to "Shut Up" twice during my 5k )

Good girl Barbara. =D>
Apart from echoing Sheena and David's remarks, I'd like to add that talking to you about rowing and actually seeing you rowing, has motivated me even more to carry on with a structured training plan ( Beginner's PP ). Thank you.

Re: Anyone had any PBs recently?
Sheena - it was all about using your machine - my new favorite erg on the planet
David totally agree on the 2k being its own beast. I'm relieved I didn't sign up for pre-2k jitters at your house, but... curious what the result would have been. Seeing John dealing with his 1k nerves was inspiring - admire him for going for it.
Jill that is great to hear! I hope you find the PP work enjoyable. I joined the rowing club here in 2008 - at the time, suffering from iron-deficiency anemia. The furthest thing from my mind was competition, time trials, and PBs. I just wanted it to not be sooooo difficult to get through the day. I've come come to enjoy racing and competition for the ways they've helped me grow & change. I hope you'll find similar (and additional!) rewards in exploring the boundaries.

Re: Anyone had any PBs recently?
Despite David’s calm and expert coxing and with the winning post in sight, I let him down ( nerves all over the place ) and HD - it was only hearing others shout “ No! “ that made me pick up again and carry on. Too late though - 4.35.2.
Since then, I’ve mentally issued a number of apologies to David and more than a few to myself.
Yesterday, although I felt that I’d started too quickly and made myself slow down a little, I have at least redeemed myself.

Thank you.
Barbara, I must confess that I'm rather enjoying the feeling of ' nailing it ' so must do my best to make it last as long as possible.
Peter, strictly speaking, it was without any coxing … but as David’s coxing would have resulted in a PB for me, if I hadn’t HD, then in fairness, he is entitled to ( although somewhat delayed ) the credit for getting me through. =D> Thank you too, for all your helpful advice, when you talked me through the screenshot of my previous PB.
David, you now hold the World Record for the longest coxing session in rowing history.
Sheena, Mmmm …
Paul, yes, come along now, no slacking …

I'm so far off PB pace at present that it's very disheartening. And I seem to be getting slower and slower.Jill wrote:Paul, yes, come along now, no slacking …

Not sure why, but I've suffered badly from the HD demons in the last couple of weeks and have bailed out on a number of HM and CTC attempts. The only rows I've managed to complete at any kind of pace are short sprints and they are several seconds behind PB pace.
I think it's partly due to having put on a few pounds and partly due to not getting enough sleep - possibly interrelated problems. Any suggestions as to how I might get my mojo back will be very welcome.

Re: Anyone had any PBs recently?
Looks like my recent lack of mojo may be due to medical issues. Currently in A&E, having woken up with chest pains at 6 this morning. Lots of tests done and they've ruled out heart problems (having initially been a bit concerned about how low my resting heart rate is), but I may be kept in overnight so they can do more tests tomorrow.
Enforced rest day for me, so. Hopefully I'll get the all clear tomorrow and will be able to get back into the swing of things without too much delay.
