CTC for Aug 2006: 500m Unrestricted

Post by Gregor Andrews »

I thought I'd start a new thread for this months challenge.

Good to see we have a boat in the points table already (currently 3rd of 6 boats).

When is everyone going to attempt this one?
My knees don't feel up to a sprint at the moment so I think I'll leave it for a couple of days.

If anyone reading this doesn't know about the CTC challenges the website can be found here: http://www.c2ctc.com/.

Good luck folks! Hopefully we can beat last months total of 12 full boats.

After my HM PB yesterday, and my shocker in Cambridge today I suspect that I would get 400m then blow up. So not today. Maybe in a week or so.

Exactly right, but for different reasons Thomas! :( You are suffering from over-row, I am suffering from under-row for the last two weeks. Got to 400m with good chance of beating PB, then exploded    to half a second outside it. Still allowed me to be top Free Spirit in the CTC Challenge for an hour or two, and jumped us up from 3 to 2. I wonder if I would have moved us to number one with a PB. Try again in a day or two - suppose I'll be down to boat five or six by then :(

I will probably have to leave this until next week. In no fit state to do a flat out row at the moment.

Thanks Rob, hopefully one day you'll be able to get my short distance pace, and I'll be able to get to your long distance pace :D
If that happened I think I'd be getting the better deal though

fark that was hard work - just posted a 1:30 flat.

have decided I must be a middle distance rower!!

Did a 500 at 1:40 to warm up, then had a go, got a 1:31, then 2 more 500s at easy paces, and then gave it another nudge, and got 1:30.

Might start rowing a few 'sprints' in my longer rows to get used to rowing that fast, and then work on holding it. Shit, it's 'just' for a minute and a half!!! Try and get sub 1:30 for as many strokes as possible, then recover, and then crank into it againa few minutes later.

Good fun these challenge things!

Just tried a flat out 500 after a 10k. Thought I would be ok as my lungs seem to be clear now, but no. Had to stop at the half way mark. Probably went off too quick and should have settled for a slower row - after all I have all month to improve it. *sigh*.

I treid that once thinking that was a low HR 10k so I'll be fine, it is just 90 seconds. Er no.

I am plotting my first stab at this tomorrow evening after nearly three days away from the ergo.

I had a go at the 500m tonight.

My shoulder is still sore, so I didn't go flat out because I got a twinge from it as soon as I started. I ended up doing 1:32.3, which is 2.3 seconds outside my PB, but at least I got a time in and I'm currently in Free Spirits II.

Just made another attempt at the ctc. Managed 1.38.7 which is 1.6 secs off my best. Rested 10 mins and tried again but only managed 1.38.9. Oh well something to build on.

Lightweight Male

Post by plummy »

Reducing FB - "We need a lightweight - where are you?" - I'm here! I've been shaking off a virus this week so not done anything too extreme re rowing. Managed a 45 min session (10985m) yesterday with no ill effects other than usual tiredness so will stump up a 500m this afternoon after the F1 Grand Prix

My XX's posted a 2:07.8 today, after a 10K. Yeah, I did read the previous posts on how doing 500m after a 10K might not be such a great idea, but ... I rowed a PB of 46:01.1 and figured the adrenalin high of that would help.

I'm definitely not a sprinter. This was my first 500m. I have done a few 1K's for time and my best there is 4:14.1, so the 2:07 time is about right. I'll give it a go a few more times this month.

OK - time posted. Not bad. :D
But a top tip boys & girls...... Using a 500m sprint as a 'welcome back' after 3weeks of leasurely swims as your only exercise hurts

Improved to 1:32.6 for 500m, rowing a minute or two after a 15K on first day back from business trip. Not bad, though the distance piece was rubbish. I have a 141,500m deficit to make up to regain my 10K per day average. Stupid travel. Stupid hotels with no C2s! It's gonna be a rough few weeks.

Rowed the 500m before the long piece today and it showed: 1:30.7. Boris (1:30.3) still edges me out of boat I though, nice 500m for a lightweight Boris!
