Re: The fall short of expectations workout thread
It is interesting re the mental demons. If I set out with the clock at 60 minutes, I almost invariably handle down at 35-45 minutes now, whereas if I go for "Just Row", I can keep going to and through the hour mark. I never thought of 3 x 20 minutes and no rest - I may try that - great sug...

Re: SALT INTAKE
Clive,
I'm no expert but I think you only need to worry about salt intake unless you are doing prolonged excercise (multiples of hours etc) and sweating profusely whilst doing it. I was advised to maybe take a tiny bit of salt in water whilst doing my 100k but that was 8 hours solid.

Re: BIRC 2008 Anybody going?
Great news Kirby. As you are my rowing hero, I'll be bringing my autograph book along methinks. Just don't show me up too badly in my race (I'll be ECSTATIC if I go sub 7 again and you are talking about 6:38!!). Having moved into another age group from Stuart Bizzarri, I thought I might move up a pl...

Re: July CTC - 8x500m rest 3' -- VOTE to add to our ELM league?
Well, I'm pleased to say that I've managed a sprint event and although not very fast, it wasn't too shabby an effort either AND my groin survived intact. 8 x 500 for the CTC to get a time in 1:49.0 1:48.8 1:47.6 1:46.6 1:46.8 1:45.2 1:45.3 1:44.0 Average 1:46.6 Considering I was contemplating never ...

Bit gutted but I can't make it today (best laid plans etc). Mrs Plummy's car blew up big style yesterday (head gasket shot/engine block cracked). The repair would cost as much as the vehicle is worth. #-o #-o She needs a vehicle as she's a child minder so it's off to all the local dealers to see wha...

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?
Set the PM4 for 42195 as I had a whole day free. Got to 16749 in 1:11:03.1 and handled down (average split was 2:07.3 at the time) - not sure why I handled down other than maybe I could feel another blister starting and mental strength is rubbish at the moment. Anything under 2:14 would have been a ...

Re: Getting it back (quietly)
Still struggling to find any form but seem to be making some headway on the longer rows, albeit in baby steps e.g. 22/6/08 managed 14097m in 60 minutes (2:07.7 splits) 29/6/08 managed 11641m in 48 minutes (2:03.4 splits) 01/7/08 managed 8608m in 35 minutes (2:02 splits) 02/7/08 managed 11092m in 46 ...

I don't see Plummy on our team list, is that right Plummy ? Yep, that's right. I've every intention of getting there to play a support role (have to run it by the boss again of course) but since I can barely pull 1:55's for 1500m at the moment, I see little point in trying to compete in a race righ...

Thanks for the support guys. I managed to have a chat with a physio friend of my wife (she's worked on my groin before 8) 8) ). After asking if it was sore if I "palpated" it (I think this means: pressed it) and being told no she advised similar i.e rest and then only slow work, lots of wa...

Re: Injuries.....:(
Tweaked my groin AGAIN! I was trying the Pete Plan 3/2.5/2k last night - struggling with an average pace of 1:56 (YES 1:56!). 4 months ago it was 1:51. In the last 200m I was pulling for all my worth and only managing a couple of strokes at 1:49. I'm thinking of bowing out of anything sprint orienta...

I'd love to take part in a similar (or same again) challenge as last year but would prefer to keep it exclusively Free Spirits unless we are really stuck. If we open it to anyone it massively dilutes both the challenge and the sense of achievement. If people want in, they can always join our little ...

Motley collection of.. Kalenji running top and shorts (not 'cos I run but because they are very light and very breatheable - don't collect sweat and get heavy/sticky). If all of these are in the wash then I move back to any thin old T-shirt in the drawer. Favourite undies (keeps everything er, "...

After virtually (if not actually) my slowest and hardest HM yesterday I wasn't even going to bother today, but as I'm off to HQ in Kent for 2 days this week so will have a forced lay off for 2 days, when a little gap appeared and I decided to have a little 22-23 minute 5k paddle to stretch out the a...

I have to agree with Badocter - we've done ourselves proud on this challenge. More so because there were many HM virgins and also becasue so many appeared to struggle through heat/pain/blisters/fatigue/other to get there. As a physical prize, there's only a downloadable certificate - as a personal p...

Another thing that would be quite neat is if you could you could just watch these races. Re: Summer Solstice Row 2008
Nice first HM Alan - you would have beaten me! I only managed 1:30.11.1 3 handle downs/one change of gloves owing to the ever annoying blister situation and a loss of about 25 seconds at the start as literally just when Rowpro said "ROW" (on a solo quick race), Mrs Plummy marched in, showi...

Well done on the new PB Dave - sorry I couldn't join you
I did my own thing on Rowpro and it was probably the hardest yet almost the slowest HM I've done (when I've finished it - I've had plenty of handle downs in the past)
