Re: Closing ceremony

So who will light the 2012 Olympic flame then? I reckon it will be one of: Redgrave, Holmes, Thompson, Coe, Hoy, Pinsent, but probably Redgrave. I heard one wag suggest Vicky Pollard flicking a fag end to light it... It was Adrian Chiles on BBC sport but I thought he suggested Amy Winehouse?

Re: WELCOME to New Members

You are most welcome amongst Free Spirits Jonathan. Seems like you have a good solid base to work on if you've already pipped 7 minutes in the past.

If you can make it to BIRC, all the better and don't worry about times (not that I'm one to talk as I fret pretty badly)

First attempt - 1139m (thought I was gonna die - why can't you make that clock tick faster)

1:45.3 split (hurt so much it's put me off racing - seriously)

Welcome Iain - the more LWT's the merrier (as long as they aren't in my age group) - I'm slow enough as it is

Back to rowing after a long break AND a new baby. One'll make to want to sleep and the other won't let you - sounds like a tough combo [-o<

Congratulations

Re: Lifetime Millionaires Club

I've had a chat with Carl at C2 in the UK and he says that the lifetime distance medals have definitely stopped (T-shirt and a certificate now only). I liked the medals a lot so I was wondering if it's worth looking into perhaps doing our own "Free Spirits" lifetime millionaires medals? Th...

Re: Grimsby Mile

OK - bitten the bullet and will send the cheque off today. (Turns out that Mrs Plummy is at some craft fair thingy all day so I get a free pass out to play).

I've put a time of 5:44 but it'll be whatever it'll be (and still hurt)

Anyone decided on car sharing yet?

7:54 and change (ended up at 23 SPM and had just done a 10k so maybe a bit more there)

Nearly a minute slower than my unrestricted rate

Won't be doing many more attempts though - hate low SPM stuff

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?

10 minute warm up - 2347m 5k fast (but not trying for a pb or anything- just wanted to hold a solid pace of 1:57/1:58 and hopefully a sprint at the end). Got a bit carried away and ended up with: 18:57.4 - which is 15s off a seasons best but I'm happy with that as I know I could have gone a bit fast...

Petr - I can't pull 1:25 for one stroke :? :?

Sarah - I think I pulled a 1:36 once =P~

Training Too Hard Per Session

I've always tended to train as hard as I can for as long as I can on every session basically leaving me absolutely completely cream crackered at the end of the session (the only exceptions being the long slow rows in the 100km training earlier this year) - and I'm wondering if this is counter produc...

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?

After a few interval sessions I figured I'd better do a 2k test. Full day rest yesterday after 4 hard days produced: 7:10.6 (seasons best to date was 7:16.2) Good improvement but frankly I'm worried cos that really hurt and I had to dig deep to finish it (couple of 1:50's crept in at the end). Methi...

Toying with the idea of having a go - are entries still allowed?

I'd be travelling from Manchester so could collect or be happy to be collected enroute (M62 corridor)

May be a good test for BIRC

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?

After 4 days straight I was going to have a rest but again I had a time slot appear and surprsingly the legs weren't (quite) as wrecked as I thought they'd be after yesterday's hour. Did a dip into a Pete Plan session with longer intervals: 3000 (11:28.9) @ 1:54.8 split 2500 (9.26.1) @ 1:53.2 split ...

Re: Sports I would drop from the Olympics...

I think Badocter's idea of an additional medal for breaking an Olympic record is a great one (if you break the world record, you get an Olympic record by default anyway). The women's 5k (or was it 10k) was a joke. barely made it into a run for 90% of the race ond then just sprinted the last 2 laps -...

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?

After two handle downs in 2 days, I managed to complete my best 60 mins since my 100km - 14802m. The last 10 minutes was really really tough not to handle down (or at least slow down) but after quitting at 8447m into a 10km on Saturday (1:57.5 pace) and quitting at 50 minutes into a 60 minuter yeste...

Nice one Colin. The good thing about taking 12 seconds off in one lump is you know there's more in the tank to come - albeit usually in smaller and smaller lumps (unless your name is John Glynn)
