Good to be back, and very glad you're still here.
Where else would I go to talk about erging pain?

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?
A gentle 3k yesterday.
My first training since before Christmas.
I got a nasty virus, which turned into a chest/lung infection and hung about for most of January. Thought the cough would never go.
Finally feeling strong again, so trying to get back into rowing.
What's the news?

Re: The January CTC will be our choice
Very happy with either 6k or 30'.
I might even get afloat (ha ha) as those are the distances I'm focusing on to get fitter.
If we want to add the 'make it a bit weird' requirement in, too, how about 7102m?
Still the right sort of distance, and 2017 backwards?

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Thanks, Zoot. Tried 30' again after work. Thought I could beat my PB of 6,450 2:19.5, but it seems I've got to the stage where I can only expect smaller improvements each time. HR was at max with 10 mins still to go, and in those 10 mins I was getting slower, not faster :-) 30:00.0 6,419m 2:20.2 127...

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
OK, decided to improve my 30' SB (and maybe PB). SB was easy (I'd only done it once this year, right at the beginning). PB from 4 years ago was 6,450 (2:19.6) Putting my recent heart-bursting 10k and 2k times into the magic prediction machine told me to aim at 2:21.0 Here's what happened: 30:00.0 6,...

Cheers, both.
Not sure how long it will be before I get to sub-8:00, but I guess gradual cardio-respiratory capacity building will do it in the end.

Wow. Nice rowing, Rodger
I'm hoping to go below 9:00 for a 2k next, but 7:30 seems a few years away at this stage

Re: Anyone had any SEASON's bests recently?
Bottled out of the 1k CTC, and went for another 10k instead. HR was nearly 160 with 6k to go :-O but I managed to persevere and knock nearly a minute off my SB! Re: November ctc - 1k unrestricted, standing start
Zoot, fair enough. Thanks for explanation. Sounds more like work than fun :-) The magic FS pace predictor suggests 2:08.5 is what I should expect, so 2:10 wasn't as bad as I thought. I'll try and suffocate myself into a 2:08 for the CTC boatage, then maybe go back to improving my 10k. Unless it turn...

Re: 2016 weight loss thread
I've been failing at this. 13st 11lbs now, so basically back to where I was ages ago.
Evening snacks and not enough exercise have been my failings.
Well done, Zoot, for continuous progress!

Re: November ctc - 1k unrestricted, standing start
Zoot, I hear that gentle challenge :-) It was a weird sort of painful: my need for air seemed to be way ahead of my rising pulse rate, rather than staying in step as it does in the longer distances. I was struggling to breath properly, even though my HR was only 150 or so. Normally, I start puffing ...

Re: 2016 weight loss thread
Slight cheat (just finished a 10k row) but now at 13st 10lbs, just so lost 2 pounds after the excess of holidays.
Still need to lose a pound a week to hit 13 stone by Chrimbo.

Re: 2016 weight loss thread
Zoot+, Apologies. Been away on hols with no scales, no erg, and lots of food and wine. Got back late last night. Checked this morning and I'm 13st 12lbs, so back up a pound over the two weeks. Lots of travelling this week, but I'm hoping to get a 10k in at some point. Well done to everyone who's mak...

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?
Last day in Paradise today. Been in Tenerife for a few weeks, doing eight tenths of naff all (at least exercise-wise) with Paula :-) Weight might be OK, as I've had lots of fish and few carbs. Erg power and endurance may have slipped back a bit. Lots of travelling tomorrow, then catching up at work....

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
Great advice, all. I'm grateful. I used to do 10k and 30' sessions as my normal training when I was keen, three years ago. I got down to 2:24.0 for 10k on Christmas Eve 2012 (my PB). My training then was aimed at aerobic fitness, so long sessions at a pace that I could maintain to the end without bu...

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
Rodger (and Thomas): that's really useful. Thanks. I'm improving fairly quickly at the moment, from a pretty low baseline, but that gives me a useful yardstick. Sheena: 2:20 would kill me for even the 30' at the moment. I was well into the 160+ bpm range (with 2:23.7), which is too high for safety u...

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted
IMG_0003.jpg OK, there's a plan, here. Go with it. The only options I have to get a reasonable showing in the October CTC (and not be on my own in the last boat, again are: 1) bribery and corruption, lying, mass hypnosis, etc.; 2) gender re-assignment surgery (probably stings a lot?); 3) start prac...
