Re: Lactate based training

Hi Nick, Glad you chimed in. I'm on a short hiatus because of some knee surgery, but I'll hopefully be back at it within a week or so. I agree with you that drift over 20 minutes is a pretty good way to predict lactate and it's a lot easier to measure. I'm impressed by a 215w power at <2mmol/l. A co...

Re: Injuries.....:(

Paul: I'm certainly not one to talk, but I hope you take it very, very slowly in terms of getting back into rowing. Do you think that skierg might be an alternative that would be easier on your back? You could still do all the challenges and stuff tat way and take ess risk with your back (I think?) ...

Re: Injuries.....:(

I had the surgery on the other knee when I was young and spry (touch football during lunch at work turned out to be a bad idea). The recovery was complete and I've never had any other problems with it. I suspect that the repair this time will be less certain because of the other issues in the joint....

Re: Injuries.....:(

No, the MRI clearly shows that there is some arthritic degradation, but the the tear appears to be repairable. Basically, it won't be perfect, but it might get better.

Re: Injuries.....:(

Diagnosis has turned out to be a tear in the meniscus cartilage. Arthroscopic surgery probably in sometime in December. I'm actually feeling hopeful, since the alternative would be living with how it is now and trying to figure out how to limit the range of motion to avoid causing more damage.

Re: Injuries.....:(

Maybe I made it sound a bit too dramatic. Yes, it's a problem and either I can get it fixed, or I'll figure out how to adjust to it. There are so many people that are dealing with much more difficult health issues than this.

Re: Injuries.....:(

quick update. I saw the orthopedist Tuesday morning. With some bending and flexing, pocking and prodding and a couple of xrays, he diagnosed me as having osteo-arthritis. In addition to that, there may be a tear or debris in the joint which could cause the intermittent locking, clicking and pain. He...

Re: November ctc - 1k unrestricted, standing start

i'm a bit hampered by my knee problems, but I wanted to at least post a score. I put a bandaid across the rail to give me a subtle reminder to avoid going to full compression and did a few 1K pieces. I started at 1:55 pace, which was not tough, but it was weird trying to get used to the short slide ...

Re: Injuries.....:(

Nothing as serious or scary as Dave's story. I managed to do something terrible to my knee and in the most humiliating way possible. While I was taking off my pants on Thursday night. I bent my knee to get my leg out of the pants and felt something go pop. This was followed by a shooting pain and an...

Re: Crazy Bear Challenge-Row 30 HMs in 45 days

Hi! This is awesome. I am very much enjoying doing this with a bunch of other folks. Tako: glad you're joining in. Zoot: I don't think I can swing a transcontinental jaunt to grind away for an hour and a half. But I have to admit it's a bit tempting. I might accidentally need to go see a customer ou...

Re: The January CTC will be our choice

Not as good as a 4x1000 on 5' rest. Since it is time based, it will be close to 2k pace if your 2k time is close to 8 minutes. If your 2k is a lot faster than that, you'd need to pace this 1 to 2 seconds slower.

Re: The January CTC will be our choice

Hi, Since January is prime prep time for indoor racing, I'd like to suggest that we consider one of the key race prep predictor workouts.

These are along the lines of 8x500, 6x750, 4x1000. To make it a bit different we could make it 4 by 4' with 4' rest. The Free Spirit cube.

Re: Suggestions for speeding up pace in 3 weeks

Hi, Welcome to the forum. Getting ready for a HM is a long term endeavor, and it sounds like you've been doing some great training. The best thing you can do is to maintain the aerobic fitness you have and make sure that you go into the race as rested and ready as you possibly can be. You might wan...

Re: Crazy Bear Challenge-Row 30 HMs in 45 days

Barb: Welcome to the fun. With Amazon Prime, you'll have a lot of distracting movies to keep you going. I agree with your thought about the PM ticking down to 999xm. Until then HMs seem endless, after that, the end is (distantly) in sight and getting closer. I did #6 this morning and boy was it a sl...

Re: Crazy Bear Challenge-Row 30 HMs in 45 days

#5 for me today. It was a tough one. Very close to my limits.

1:21:38.8 (1:56.1 pace)

It destroyed me. More than an hour with my HR above 165.

The depressing bit is that it's still almost 3 splits slower than my PB. Tomorrow I go back to slow and controlled HMs.

Re: Crazy Bear Challenge-Row 30 HMs in 45 days

All of this talk of half marathons has gotten me jealous. I looked at my typical steady state session and saw that it was about 20km, so I decided to just extend that a bit and do HMs instead. For my standard endurance training session, I usually do 4x20'/1' rests, so I have just been setting up a h...

Re: October CTC: 10k unrestricted

Hi Y'all! I have returned to my landlocked state, having completed a completely lackluster OTW season. Most of my racing this year was in a double, which taught me a valuable lesson: I prefer to row a single. But enough about that. To get back in the groove I decided to get a late entry into the Oct...

Re: OTW results

Barbara, Your technique is so much better than mine that I hesitate to say anything. And frankly to find any real ideas of things to work on required me to slow the video down to 1/4 speed. Once I did that, I saw two things that you might want to work on. - There is a little bit of a pause at the ca...
