Re: October ctc - 30 mins., standing start, unrestricted

Hello Everyone,

Nice to see lots of great results and friendly competition. I'm really sorry for the wonky entry in this month's CTC and have asked Citroen to delete it. So it doesn't mess up your boats I have temporarily changed it to 1m

Re: Nonathlon 2021

Just updated my scores and noticed that Fred was sitting on a rather tasty total of 8218 points. Great total for so early in the season =D>

Re: July ctc - 2112m

Thanks Kevin. Plenty time this evening if you fancy another go!

Well that was a lot harder than I hoped. Legs heavy from the start but managed 7:23.3 @1.44.9. Ave pace moved under 1:45 with about 10 strokes to go

Tempted to have another go 😱😱 but know I shouldn't 😂
Lots of fantastic rowing this month!

Kevin, That's a tough target to beat. Hoping to have a final attempt tomorrow.

Re: July ctc - 2112m

Joe, Congratulations, 10th in the BikeErg World Sprints =D> =D> =D> Fred and Iain, Great rowing! 3rd attempt today and the 1:47 plan went right out of the window (in a good way). My erg has been jumping badly when I try a fast start so I moved the mat to see if that would help (there are big dents w...

Re: July ctc - 2112m

Peter, I'm certainly planning on doing 4 attempts. Joe, I think I also lost more core strength than legs / arms. Not helped by adding a couple of kilos in weight. For today's attempt I listened to the parrot on my shoulder squawking 1:48.8, 1:48.8. So a quick start and then settled at 1:49 for 7:38....

Re: July ctc - 2112m

It takes so much effort to build fitness and then it disappears so quickly! Surprised by the HR which is 91% of maximum. 7:43.6 @1:49.7

Re: July ctc - 2112m

Well done Joe and a nice sprint finish. I'm also coming back from a few weeks off and my plan is to try this once a week starting at 1:50 and taking 1 second off the pace each week with the ultimate aim of going 7:30 @1:46.5. But now I'm going to have to try really hard not to listen to the demon on...

Re: Training to lower heart rate

Hi Jon, Great question. To add to Wolfie's reply I read a book last year "Heart rate training for the compleat idiot" by Parker. Unfortunately it isn't in print now and I gave my copy away. It was very much about polarised training but the main thing thing I remember is slow down. So stay ...

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?

Hi Paul V,

At 6'1" you're an inch or 2 taller than me. What do you class as a "relatively short stroke". I have shorter legs compared to body so not really built for rowing and usually see 1.39 to 1.45 depending on stroke rate and how much I'm thinking about technique.

Jon, Well done on your PBs, very impressive =D> =D> =D> . Last year when I did a lot of low rate training I saw PBs at shorter and longer distances but not in the middle. Hopefully your experience will be different but it'll be interesting to see.

Well that was hard but pleased each split was slightly faster than planned to finish on 4,458m @1.47.7. Thank you Fred, I wouldn't have pushed so hard without the target. Lots of great rowing this month and a special well done to Claudius.

Re: June CTC

Well done Fred. I've not rowed this month so it'll be a challenge, but you've given me a tough target to aim for. Pacing of 1:50, 1:49, 1:47 and 1:40 would total 4,426m @1:48.4. Not sure I can do it, especially the 3 minute interval, but I'll try!

Re: June CTC

First week almost over and only 3 entries from us on our own challenge so far.... Suspect it'll take me a couple of weeks to regain even a little fitness. Was your 4,372 flat out or is there more in the tank? Has anyone any thoughts on pacing. I'm guessing average pace is mid way between 2k and 5k ...

Re: Last year of the Meteboard? / Meterboard3?

But we do still need to find a solution because lots of people value the meterboard. I would think something like... 1. Description of skill set needed and likely time commitment. 2. Stan emails members and asks if anyone has the skill set and is willing to take on the role. 3. If that works fine. I...

Re: May ctc - 1‘, standing start

So, I recommend repeated efforts until you find the sweet spot where the glycolytic system manages to keep you going for the full 60 seconds. How many repetitions this will take is anyone's guess. Do let us know   Jon, That's a great explanation. It makes being eaten by said pouncing ...

Re: May ctc - 1‘, standing start

What Ron and Paul V describe happens to me as well. I can feel it on the erg and see it the C2 workout graph. After a few seconds I dip a little and after c45 second I start falling off a cliff. The first one is after a fast start when I'm adjusting to target/race pace so that makes sense. But the d...

Re: May ctc - 1‘, standing start

Rowing once in three weeks wasn't the ideal preparation but I was still hoping for 1:30. Unfortunately the erg was jumping around so much that the monitor fell backwards so I had no idea how I was doing. Managed 1:30.6 which is 331 meters. Apologies to Wolfie, and respect to Tako and Fred for the fa...

Re: do you want a new captain

This is an interesting discussion. On one hand there are a few times where I would have expected a Captain to be more visible. However, on the other hand having a leader that takes their duties lightly is very much in the ethos of Free Spirits. It's part of who we are and I think it's important not ...

Re: 2019/20 Summary and Aspirations for 2020/21

Thanks Dave. I like hearing about everyone's successes and find the plans for next year motivating. Last season was definitely my coming of age in terms of rowing. After 2 or 3 years of steady improvement suddenly gains were hard to achieve. A quick summary of my goals is not a pretty picture althou...
