Re: Lactate based training

I set a 10k PB a week before the April test Then I am struggling to see a correlation between this two step test that you are doing and judging relative fitness to be honest  Where did the protocol come from and did that state the reason for doing it/what to look for? Stelph, I have that as 20...

And here is another paper (from 1992): https://www.iat.uni-leipzig.de/datenbanken/iks/open_archive/bms/6_243-249_Olbrecht.pdf Thanks for the images Sander - correct me if wrog but to me in summary these seem to be proving the statement I have heard a few times around lactate testing which is "...

Re: Lactate based training

Popping back to the brain trust thread to bounce some thinking around training and in particular “sweetspot training” and the possibility of integrating that concept into the training plan Could this be a British Rower doing a "Sweetspot Workout"? I saw this when Brianna tweeted it (can s...

Re: Lactate based training

AEC - La 1-2 - increase/maintain VO2 max. Biologically: adaptations in slow-twitch fiber type I. More Mitochondria. Ineffective above a certain intensity because the adaptations change - i.e. body will move to fast twitch if you row too hard. An interesting comment in the book is that to stimulate ...

Re: Lactate based training

Interesting discussion and thanks for resurrecting it. I am scheduled to do a "2 speed lactate test" tomorrow. In the past year I have been going quite along the lines of what Olbrecht writes in his book "The Science of Winning", but trying to tweak it to rowing and the distance...

Re: Lactate based training

But in my gut I tend to agree with you, especially for head racing, that having regular training sessions that resemble race conditions is important to building mental toughness and to help you learn how hard you can push things. Interesting that you should mention that..... Thanks for the referenc...

Re: Lactate based training

Tom, Thanks for posting the link to the article. I think it looks like a pretty well designed study. The money chart for me is this one. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i148/gregory_smith3/Screen%20Shot%202016-09-22%20at%201.41.23%20PM_zpsj9fh5gv1.png The study conclusion is that short interval s...

Re: Lactate based training

On that page 65, I find the curve (dotted line) they draw through the data points quite dodgy. Interesting comment about this being an "anaerobically" driven athlete who still has low end lactate. The key about interpreting these data plots is in comparing progress during the preparation ...

Re: Lactate based training

The stroke rates these are done at are very high for steady state (well what until the last few weeks I have considered high for SS ratings, starting to revise my thoughts on SPM and SS). LT2 seems to be up near 27-30SPM, LT1 22-25SPM, these are high SPM's even for a Dynamic? I think that is just m...

Re: Lactate based training

I found this presentation on worldrowing.com which is very interesting: http://www.worldrowing.com/mm//Document/General/General/12/19/45/NickClarke_Neutral.pdf Talks about lactate, about measuring athletes, about polarized training ... what do we want more? Thanks for sharing, it looks to be a good...

Re: Lactate based training

Stelph - I did a threshold row at 2.6% HR drift there is no way my lactates could have been low as HR was up near 190 and I was working quite hard (for me). I did tune up the wattage as the row went on but I did the same on the one a week before but that was up at >6% drift. This is the first row t...

Re: Lactate based training

You mention it takes 90 seconds to do a test. Just a few thoughts on this. I read a study somewhere that says blood lactate is correct up to about 45 seconds from the exercise finishing. Stelph posted it somewhere I believe. Time to lactate should be recorded each time. I count this as how long it ...

Re: Lactate based training

I may have failed or did I.......dropping 5seconds/500m on the split I was expecting to see 1.0mmol or below but still only got 1.4mmol after 20mins and 1.4mmol after 60mins. So there was no accumulation of lactate so I could have possibly been at or around AeT. I did struggle in the middle to keep...

Re: Lactate based training

When I'm on the water next spring, I think i will try to note my HR at the end of each steady state piece (around 15 minutes) figure what 3% higher would be, and use that as a cap for the next piece. I might even print out a little cheat sheet and tape it to the toe of my shoe. Stelph maybe you nee...

Re: Lactate based training

Interesting finding during last nights erg, a 2 x 30mins with a lactate test during and at the end. Before I started I was feeling slightly fatigued with a mild sore throat (something I feel I have got over already) and so I was expecting (and got) two higher readings than I had had earlier in the w...

Re: Lactate based training

It's not exact, but I used the HR at 25% of the way through and the HR 75% of the way through to save the effort of calculating the first half and second half averages. Stelph you got this HR coupling info from training peaks. The article you linked to on their website shows this info in a 'cycling...

Re: Lactate based training

Personally I think in perfect conditions the lactate level and cardiac drift correlate, or at least they have done so for the limited amount of testing I have done so far. Have you looked at how the cardiac drift compares in a Threshold or even higher intensity long row? Hour of power for example? ...

Re: Lactate based training

Gents, just to play the devil's advocate. There may be several causes for CV drift which may vary from session to session. Imagine you do one erg session in a hot fitness center and you measure CV drift. The next time you do the same session in your cool basement and measure CV drift. Do you expect...

Thanks for sharing that Tom. Looks good. More to put in my spreadsheet gonna have to spend some time working out those HR ratio's :D EDIT:- Right the study seems to be for just above AeT workouts with out rests. Would a 3x20min fit into this if there is a 2min gap after first 20 min. Could I calcul...

Re: Lactate based training

Relating to heart rate, one concept I have been tracking lately is the idea of heart rate coupling, something that Joe Friel originally and is outlined in the link below and I have been finding it interesting to use as supporting data to lactate testing http://home.trainingpeaks.com/blog/article/aero...

Re: Lactate based training

Agree with the point that the power levels are too high currently, ive never done as many samples as that but with the method of testing after the first 20" and again at the end of the pieces I would guess that this aligns with my own findings for when I am "over-cooking it"

Re: Lactate based training

An interesting new study looking into Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and training https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_rate_variability HRV has been mentioned previously in this thread as a way to monitor your training and as a way to check if you are getting overly fatigued and at risk of suffering fr...
