Re: The Boys in the Boat
Wonderful book (and hopefully movie someday soon). Thanks for the trailer, Barbara, and the memorable quote, Dan. Tom Brokaw called the people of that era the "Greatest Generation". Tough as nails, they were. I love that the story connects the hardship of the depression with rowing against...

Re: The Pete Plan
Nice work, Dan. I started the Pete Plan 3 weeks ago and I was about 5 splits slower than you on the first 8x500. I guess the point of the plan is progression, so I hope to get below 1:40 average splits before March 1. I feel like that will correspond to a sub-6:40 2k given my physiology. What do you...

Re: December CTC - The AWL Octagon
Took the Challenge this morning. My body was not fully ready for this kind of sprinting even after a good long warmup. I was glad this wasn't the AWL decagon as I held on for dear life for the last three segments: 21.6 - 1:20.0 22.2 - 1:22.2 22.3 - 1:22.5 22.1 - 1:21.8 22.4 - 1:22.9 22.5 - 1:23.3 22...

Re: Free Spirits CTC Participation and Leaderboard
Excellent tips, Greg. I will re-read before this winter's ergattas for sure. I also appreciate Barbara's pointers on eating things that are familiar and getting a good penultimate night's sleep. I never seem to sleep well on the night before a race. Good luck next week, John. I will add my tip: Have...

Re: November CTC
Second try at the November challenge. I was better rested, warmed up and more awake for this one. I attacked the first four intervals more aggressively this time. This enabled me to "bank" several seconds versus my first trial heading into the last three intervals. From there, I hung on fo...

Re: November CTC
140 meters less rowing and 1 minute more resting than The Sting in the Tail. Hmmmm.... I think 1.5/2 splits faster for this one. So target 2k minus 2 with some negative splitting to be strong for those final three pieces.

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?
2x1.5k w a 20 minute rest interval at 4:30 this morning. This is my 2k prep workout. I try to settle at or around my 2k pace for most of the workout. I cycle this one in every 3 or 4 weeks leading up to indoor racing season. I pulled 4:59.8 (1:39.9) then 5:02.8 (1:40.9). Held a 1:40 split for most o...

Second (and final) try: 1000 - @1:39.8 750 - @1:39.8 500 - @1:39.8 250 - @1:38.2 750 - @1:40.8 Total time: 10:49.5 @1:39.9. I'd like to think that my 2k will be a bit faster next time I test. Good luck to those still planning to undertake this endeavor. Despite my best intentions, I did not negative...

Re: October CTC - Fitness Matters' Sting in the Tail
Good job, Paul. I meant to negative split the pieces as you did, but I underestimated my fatigue curve at a sub-1:40 pace. I think the right target is about 1 split faster than the August challenge and about dead on 2k pace. Here are my splits: 1000 - @1:39.7 750 - @1:39.7 500 - @1:39.5 250 - @1:39....

Re: August CTC
Take Two. This one felt better despite its relegation to my 4.15am workout spot. Negative split the first two pieces and had similar times to Take One with more in reserve for the final 500m. Overall a 2.5 second beat. Great way to start the day. I was buzzing until about 2pm. Not so much after that...

Row House NYC
Have any Free Spirits tried Row House? I've recently started attending indoor rowing classes at Row House NYC http://www.rowhousenyc.com/#experience in the upper west side. They are intended to be rowing's version of spinning classes. If anyone is familiar with Soul Cycle, that's the analogy. The cl...

Re: August CTC
This workout was harder to do than I expected. Total time: 10:12.0 (1:42.0). 1500 @ 1:42.8 for 5:08.6 - 1000 @ 1:41.9 for 3:23.8 - 500 @ 1:39.6. Felt ok after 1500, but could not hold my 1:41 target for the 1000. Struggled through the middle piece and had very little left for the last 500. I may try...

Hi Chris. Those are pretty good times you've recorded so far for the nonathlon, particularly for the 500m and 1k. Wow![/quote] Thanks, Stan. I am reasonably new to the rowing world (via my daughters) and I have obvious weaknesses (stamina and endurance) to improve upon. The nonathlon points this out...

I am having trouble signing up for the challenge. I clicked on the WEC link on the team page. It just takes me the WEC page. I am obviously missing something that 100 of you have figured out. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
