Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?

I have about 39k to go :-) I'm doing HR-driven, too, but much more cautiously than you need to, I think. My first long row after re-starting was keeping to max 145 or so, and was very slow. Last one I aimed at a bit faster pace, but I seem to have got back into it faster than I thought, and the HR d...

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?

I’m back after quite a while away: firstly forced, then laziness/inertia. I’m starting gentle, with 5Ks at a limited HR, aiming to speed up the average pace each time. I’m within 10 ish rows of my first million metres, so using that as a milestone target. Hope everyone’s well, and training in their ...

Re: 2022 weight loss thread

Plummy, sounds like the illness, and consequent lack of metres, has caused you to go out of balance a bit. I'd have thought it will fix itself over the next few weeks (if it hasn't already). I got ill over Xmas, too. 2 weeks of it! Not savage illness, but just a continuous temperature, cough or ches...

Re: Meter board banter

Well done, Phil.

I'm trying to break 200 by Christmas, and I've noticed it's getting harder to make progress, even at 222, so you must have put a proper shift in!

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?

First 5k since my heart op.

Taking it very easy; keeping HR below 150.

Seems to be working fine, still. Result :-)

Watching the England game is probably more risky, though...

Re: 2022 weight loss thread

Thanks, Carole. My stats now: 26 Nov 89.80 0.0 3 Dec 89.10 -0.70 -0.70 10 Dec 89.70 +0.60 -0.10 So back up a bit this week, but a tiny bit lower than my start. :-( I'll have to avoid the snacks better, if I can. I am gradually doing more metres, though, so I'm probably getting fitter (but not less t...

I’m now at position 245, about to hunt down a pack of resting Americans.

Maybe even breaking 200th before Chrimbo :-)

Re: 2022 weight loss thread

Sounds like acceptable 'damage', Paul, as long as you had a good time :-)

You did have quite a big loss the week before, too, so maybe this week was always likely to be more consolidating than further progress?

Smartphone cradle

Just a quick note about my current set-up, in case beginners want to copy it. I got a second-hand Model C from eBay. It's very good. I eventually upgraded the PM3 to a PM5 through Concept2, because then you can use wireless connections from a smartphone. I'd really recommend doing this. I just bough...

Re: 2022 weight loss thread

I've not really changed anything, this week: just had good intentions :-)

This is probably a blip, although I have done more exercise than usual.

Re: Returning back-slider...

Well done, Paul. Great effort. I hope your back copes well.

Maybe just do some gentle 3Ks at an absurdly slow (for you) rate, for a while, just to let it get hack in the swing of it?

Re: 2022 weight loss thread

Paul, I hope you have a great time, away. Maybe, your body can't extract and store more than X calories a day, anyway, so it's better to go berserk — very rarely — than eat extra 10 calories a day for a long time? I think 'portion control' is important, as you say: I'm still eating plates like a tee...

Re: Nonathlon 2023

Jon, yes. I was in the Nonathlon in 2017 (227th) as "J-Dog". I tried to register as that ID, but it didn't like the hyphen, so I guess that restriction came in since then? Happy to have the accounts merged, if there's a way to do that, but don't worry if it's a pain :-) I also registered (...

Re: Nonathlon 2023

Could you add in JDog as a Free Spirit, please?

I'm just getting back into rowing after some years away, so please don't worry about my 11:55 2K time - I'm going super slowly to start with, after a minor heart op :-)

Thanks.

J-Dog

PS - many thanks for the free Nonathlon site, those who support it!

Re: 2022 weight loss thread

Paul, thanks for the advice. It sounds very wise. My reason for cutting out breakfast (although I've just had some lovely Marmite on toast, under the "it's Sunday!" rule) is to do with marital harmony. In the evenings, we sit together and watch films and/or detective series on the TV. It's...

Re: 2022 weight loss thread

Thanks, Carole. My first weigh-in is 89.8 kg. My target is 80.0 kg (a BMI of about 25 - the start of 'healthy'). I know BMI doesn't work well for rowers with lots of muscle, but that isn't me: I'm just fat and bones :-) My losing-weight strategy, for now, is to just to stop eating snacks, and miss b...

Re: Meter board banter

I have stonked past 5 rowers at the bottom at the table to take 290th place with my first meters for 4 years!

Don't think I can catch the leaders, this season, but at least I'm back on the board :-)

Re: 2022 weight loss thread

Hey, Free Spirits.

I'm back rowing after 4 and a bit years, and I need to lose 10 kg or so.

I'll post weight check-ins (good or bad) each Saturday.

Thanks for the great support thread - I think I'll need it :-)

Re: Returning back-slider...

Paul, OK. Weight's fine. Good luck breaking your erg cherry after a long time away :-) Anything counts, so if you need to do 3 mins, then that's fine. I've gone down with a bit of a cold, after looking after my wife (who's been ill for a while), so I may not get much today. Still not closer to findi...

Re: Returning back-slider...

Paul, thanks for the reply. 10 pounds in a few weeks sounds a bit severe, but well done! Yes - very happy to be a training and weight-loss buddy - that sounds like a good idea. Maybe we should measure BMI, as I'm on 28.7 and you seem to be 28.6 (from your sig), and we both need to be 25.0 (where the...

Returning back-slider...

Hey, Freespirits! Not done any rowing for 4 and bit years. Mainly getting lazy, but also getting a minor heart issue, which got worse for a while, until having an op last April. Since then, I'm now off the tablets, and waiting to see if the problems come back; nothing so far, so it's time to get exe...
